Notes for SARAH ELIZABETH SMITH:
Everone seems to want to challenge John Johnson's wife's name. First,
let's go back to 1826. A lot of people haven't done their homework.
The following men came to Old Ruff Church, Saline County, as
moderators. They were: John Johnson; John Schoolcraft; who was the
grandson of John Johnson; Jacob Braden' that was married to the
daughter of John Johnson, (her name was Nancy). Also Jacob Braden's
brother, James Braden; William Johnson's Home Office
John Johnson left Old Ruff Church before Oct 1828. William Johnson
left before Aug 1831. Jacob Braden left before Oct 1828. His brother
James stayed until before June 1843. John Schoolcraft left before Oct
1828. His brother James stayed until before June 1843. John
Schoolcraft left before 1828; John Schoolcraft's mother was Eunice
Johnson, daughter of John Johnson and his father was Isaac
Schoolcraft. This is direct quote from original Old Ruff Church
Minutes. The same year that they left Old Ruff, on 16 Feb 1828, at a
log meeting house in the vicinity of Dale, the business was getting a
charter for Little Springs Church. The charter members were: Jacob
Braden, Nancy Braden; Johnson Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson; Robert
Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson; Samuel Johnson; Elizabeth Johnson; William
Johnson, Elizabeth Johnson; Fanny Odle; William Veech; John Veach'
Delilah Herd' Enoch Johnson, Mary Johnson; Elizabeth Waller, not
married yet; the Elders were: Charles Lee; William Gholson; Robert
Moore; Lee Gaine; formed a presbytry which pronounfced them a duly
organized gospel church. This is taken from Little Springs original
minutes.

In 1835, 16th March, Russel E. Brown and Sarah Schoolcraft,
grand-daughter of John Johnson, by James Twigg, dated 16th March, by
consent of John Johnson, were married in Hamilton Co., IL (John
Johnson was guardian-her parents no longer lived in this state.)
I believe at this time, John Johnson's wife, Sara Elizabeth Smith, was
still living. The church minutes, Little Springs, being the date that
it is, is documented enough to suit me. I had the pleasure of viewing
an old letter that James Wilson Johnson receivied from an older
brother in Missour. James had written and asked him what John
Johnson's wife name was. The older brother said that all he
remembered that she was a SMITH.

Children of JOHN JOHNSON and SARAH SMITH are:
i. ENOCH3 JOHNSON, m. POLLY GOLSON, January 05, 1826.
ii. EUNICE JOHNSON, m. ISAAC SCHOOLCRAFT, January 06, 1816.
iii. SAMUEL JOHNSON, m. ELIZABETH SCHOOLCRAFT, February 19, 1816, Hopkins County, KY.
iv. WILLIAM M. JOHNSON, m. ELIZABETH ODLE, April 22, 1823, Hamilton Co, IL.
v. MARTHA JOHNSON, m. JOHN LOCKHART, October 22, 1817, Hopkins Co., KY.

Notes for MARTHA JOHNSON:
Martha and John were brought here later to assist in the organizing of
Rector Fork Old Baptist Church, Hamilton, Co. IL. Most of the Johnsons
were very much church connected in the Old Baptist Organization.
Apparently Martha died shortly after they came and the birth and death
dates are not known. John Lockhart re-married and died on 11-22-1842.
After Martha's death, John and his 2nd wife went to Bethel Creek
Church, Saline Co. IL. One of the oldest churches in the Old Baptist
Organization was the Middle Fork, commonly called Old Ruff, organized
in 1826. Some of the moderators were: Jacob Braden, John Johnson, John
Schoolcraft (grandson of John Johnson). They were excused by letter in
1828 to go to the Little Springs Community to organize the Little
Springs Church. Charter Members were: Jacob Brade and Nancy Braden;
John Johnson and Elizabeth Johnson; Robert Johnson and Elizabeth
Johnson' Fannie Odle; William Veach; John Veach; Delila Heard; Enoch
Johnson and Mary Johnson and Elizabeth Waller. Elders were: Charles
Lee; William Gholson; Robert Moore and Lee Gaine formed a presbytry
which pronounced them duly organized gospel church.
Donald Cluck and wife are fortunate to have the minutes of the Old
Ruff Church dating from 1826 to August 1931.
