Crews family as it relates to Clayton Family. Allied families include: Baker, Barnett, Bundy, Clark, Clayton, Crews, Crouch, Evans, Fuller, Gray, Gutshall, Hardy, Hubbard, Minor, Mustin, Nelson, Paige, Perkins, Roundsaville




Auther Crews

This is another branch of our tree, small but significant. The Crews had settled in Virginia by the early 1700's. They to mirgrated along with the Clayton and Bumpass family to North Carolina and Tennessee. They to lived off the land, farmers mostly.

First Generation

He* married Sarah UNKNOWN* in Brunswick County, VA., 1735.
Edward* died 1768 in Mecklenberg County, VA, at 54 years of age.

He married Sarah NASH in Mecklenberg County, VA, July 25, 1782.
18 ix. Arthur CREWS was born bef. Feb. 1773.

Third Generation


11. Hardy (Hardeman)3 CREWS* (Edward*2, Arthur*1)1 was born in Hanover, Goochland, Va. 1740/1750.
He* married Phoebe GOOCHE* Person County, North Carolina, 1770. Phoebe* was born 1740. Phoebe* died bef 1800 Person County, North Carolina.

Hardy* died after 1830 in Person County, North Carolina. Pheobe /Gooche/ 1741 1770 AFT 1830 Person, NC.

BIOGRAPHY NOTE:
The marriage of Hardy Crews and Pheobe Gooche (a
Cherokee Indian) has not, to this date, been verified. It
is recognized by most researchers that it is
probable, therefore it is assumed at this time, until further
proof is shown, that Pheobe Goochewas the wife of Hardy
Crews.
A number of Crews descendants filed claims in (1909?)
listing Phoebe Gooche Crews as their Cherokee ancestor. All
of these claims were rejected. They could not show any
member of this family, or their ancestors, listed as a
Cherokee on past Rolls. Ref: "Cherokee By Blood," by Jerry

+ 22 iv. Ann CREWS was born April 10, 1778 and died September 28, 1849.
23 v. Kissiah CREWS was born in Caswell County, North Carolina abt 1783.
She married Thomas CLAYTON Person County, North Carolina, February 18, 1800. Thomas was born Abt 1762. He was the son of Daniel CLAYTON Jr. and Mary BARNETT. He married Martha Patsy CREWS Person County, North Carolina, July 2, 1811. He married Nancy CLAYTON in NC, 1817. Thomas married his first cousin.

Thomas Clayton, Sr., son of Daniel and Mary Barnett Clayton did not migrate. He and his brother Daniel "Cook" remained in Person County. Thomas, Sr. owned about 500 acres on Deep Creek in southeastern Person County. Thomas, Sr. died in 1859. His wives were Kisia Crews, Patsey Crews, Nancy Clayton and Ruthey (surname unknown). His daughters were Cathanna, Nancy and Mary. His sons were Thomas, Jr., Joseph, Daniel, Hardy, Jesse, Sidney and John Dolphin Clayton.


Marriages--North Carolina to 1825 North Carolina Person County; Clayton, Thomas married Creues, Kessiah on 18 Feb 1800 in Person County, North Carolina. Kissiah died 1810 Person County, North Carolina, at 27 years of age.

24 vi. Hardy CREWS [Jr.] was born in Caswell County, North Carolina 1784. Hardy died Lawerence County, Tennessee.
He married Ester MANAY in Knox County, TN, April 11, 1801. Ester was born in Knox County, TN 1784.
He married Catherine KNOX Person County, North Carolina, January 28, 1807. Catherine was born 1789.
25 vii. William CREWS was born in Caswell County, North Carolina 1784/1790.
He married Lucy CHILDRESS in Knox County, TN, April 19, 1813.
26 viii. Martha Patsy CREWS was born in Caswell County, North Carolina 1785. Martha died in Caswell or Person County, NC.
She married Thomas CLAYTON Person County, North Carolina, July 2, 1811. Thomas was born Abt 1762. He was the son of Daniel CLAYTON Jr. and Mary BARNETT. He married Kissiah CREWS Person County, North Carolina, February 18, 1800. He married Nancy CLAYTON in NC, 1817. Thomas married his first cousin.
27 ix. Sarah CREWS was born in Caswell County, North Carolina 1796.
She married Henry TUCKER in Person County, North Carolina, March 9, 1817. Henry was born Person County, North Carolina 1792.

20. Rachel4 CREWS* (Hardy (Hardeman)*3, Edward*2, Arthur*1) was born Person County, North Carolina 1774. Her* body was interred in NC.
She* married William "Flatriver" CLAYTON* Person County, North Carolina, October 21, 1793. William* was born in Chesterfield County, VA 1773. He* was the son of Thomas CLAYTON* and Sarah COLEMAN*. He* married Nancy BLACKARD* Person County, North Carolina, September 18, 1821. William* died 1860 Lawerence County, Tennessee, at 87 years of age. Old Flippo Cem., Lawrence, TN ABT 1876 Lawrence, TN.

William moved to TN in the early 1820's, with or near the time his son Thomas moved.

COURT:
Four children of the Thos. Clayton Family were named in Petition of Thos. Walbon-against: Thomas, Daniel, Richard, and William Clayton, Person Co., NC May 1824 Court Term, and was published in the Raleigh Register for a three week period. Ref.: Raleigh Archives. "............... Copies to Thomas and Daniel in Person. Publication three weeks in the Milton Register as to William and Richard Clayton who reside beyond the bounds of this state."

Mary Clayton Crews died between 1808 and 1810. She is not
enumerated in the census with her husband Benjamin for 1810.
She has given birth to eight children.

He married Mary ROSE in Guilford/Person, NC, October 8, 1811. Mary was born 1776. Mary died 1843 Lawerence County, Tennessee, at 67 years of age.

Benjamin died 1841 Lawerence County, Tennessee, at 66 years of age.

She married Daniel "Cobra" CLAYTON in Caswell County, North Carolina, January 22, 1798. Daniel was born Person County, North Carolina about 1775. He was the son of Thomas CLAYTON* and Sarah COLEMAN*. Daniel died January 28, 1853 Lawerence County, Tennessee, at 77 years of age. BIOGRAPHY

Daniel Cobra, son of Thomas and Sarah Coleman Clayton sold his property, on the headwaters of Mayo Creek, and left Person County in 1834. He was bound for lands near Bedford, in Lawrence County, Indiana. He married Anna Crews on 22 January 1798. Anna was the sister of William's wife Rachel. They were the daughters of Hardy Crews. The Crews were Quakers. Cobra's bondsman was his first cousin Daniel "Cook" Clayton. Daniel and Anna's daughters were Susan, Kisia Ann, Median and Kisia Martha. Their sons were John, Benjamin, Simeon, Alexander and William. Around 1853, Daniel and Anna left Indiana for Dallas County, Iowa with other family members. Record keepers for the family of Daniel and Anna Crews Clayton name Clayton Graveyard, near Van Meter, Iowa as their final resting place.

Ann died September 28, 1849 Lawerence County, Tennessee, at 71 years of age.

+ 62 vii. Simeon D. CLAYTON was born December 7, 1810 and died February 11, 1892.
63 viii. Alexander CLAYTON was born Person County, North Carolina July 7, 1814. Alexander died December 7, 1879 in Lawrence, IN, at 65 years of age. His body was interred in Lawrence, IN, Sherrill Cemetery.
64 ix. Kisiah Martha CLAYTON was born in Person County, North Carolina 1816. Kisiah died September 1861 in Bedford, IN, at 45 years of age.
65 x. William Daniel CLAYTON was born in NC April 3, 1822. William died June 4, 1919 in Van Meter, IA, at 97 years of age.

28. Stephen Scott4 CREWS (Hardy (Hardeman)3 CREWS*, Edward*2, Arthur*1) was born Person County, North Carolina 1782. His body was interred in Elkville, Jackson County, Illinois.
He married Margaret STILES in Person County, North Carolina, May 5, 1802. Margaret was born Person County, North Carolina 1786. Margaret died 1866 in Elkville, Jackson Co., Illinois, at 80 years of age.
Stephen died about 1856 in Elkville, Jackson Co., Illinois.

Stephen Scott CREWS and Margaret STILES had the following children:

He married Francis ROBINSON in Jackson County, Illinois, December 6, 1832. Francis was born in Jackson County, Illinois April 1818. Francis died September 6, 1893 in Jackson County, Illinois, at 75 years of age.
Bannister died Decembr 10, 1882 in Jackson County, Illinois, at 74 years of age.
70 v. Hardy CREWS was born Person County, North Carolina August 13, 1810.
He married Drusilla ROBINSON in Jackson County, Illinois, 1838. Drusilla was born in Jackson County, Illinois February 15, 1821. Drusilla died January 6, 1885 in Jackson County, Illinois, at 63 years of age.
Hardy died June 9, 1881 in Jackson County, Illinois, at 70 years of age.

72 vii. Elizabeth CREWS was born Person County, North Carolina June 16, 1816. Elizabeth died March 30, 1848 in Jackson County, Illinois, at 31 years of age.

He married Lucinda CANNON March 13, 1852. Lucinda was born in Murphysboro, Jackson Co., Illinois 1835.
74 ix. Delitha CREWS was born Lawerence County, Tennessee November 9, 1823.
She married Elias M. DAVIS in Jackson County, Illinois, December 12, 1844. Elias was born January 7, 1821. Elias died January 26, 1898 in Jackson County, Illinois, at 77 years of age.
Delitha died December 19, 1871 in Jackson County, Illinois, at 48 years of age.

31. Jeremiah4 HUBBARD (Anna3 CREWS, Edward2 CREWS*, Arthur*1) birth date unknown.

Jeremiah HUBBARD and Martha ALLEN had the following child:
