Coleman Research Text
Coleman family as it relates to Clayton family. Allied families include: Clayton, Bailey, Baker, Barnett, Brann, Bundy, Carver, Clark, Clayton, Coleman, Crews, Crouch, Evans, Fuller, Gray, Gutshall, Hamlin, Hardy, Leonard, Long, Marble

The Coleman family begins with Robert Coleman (1695) of England and VA. The family moves to Person County, NC around 1800. Here is where the Coleman, Clayton, Bumpass, families converge.

Robert Coleman

The Coleman branch of our tree is a large one in that, it seems these families stayed in close contact for an extended time. Several marriages occurred between the two families, and the families named several children after members of the other family. They did indeed go through Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Mississippi together. They to were mostly farmers, however, at least one is recorded as a keeper of an "ordinary". I am not aware of what an "ordinary"is. I hope it was a good thing. The Coleman's came here from England, yet they to fought in the Revolutionary War and ever major conflict this country has engaged in. They to helped build this country into a great republic.

Some Notes on the Coleman Family of Caroline County, VA ; by George H. S. King.
Robert Coleman settled in that portion of Rappahannock County, which later became Essex County where he was justice of the peace 1703, 1708, and 1709. He was sheriff of the county in 1710 and 1712. His will was admitted to probate before the Essex Court 13 August 1713. Will Book 13 page 439. Essex County Records. In his will he names his children. As follows: This Robert Coleman was also referred to as Robert of Mobjack Bay.
Thomas (m) Sarah Unknown Robert (m) Mary Clayton Elizabeth (m) Daniel Brown Edward (m) Ann Reeves Ann (m) William Covington Grizzell (m) John Chamberlain Spilsbe (m) Mary Crow

There is little, if any doubt that he married Ann Spilsby circa 1678 in Gloucester County after living in New Kent County settled in that part of Rappahannock County which became Essex County in 1688. Ann married second John Hunter and died in Essex leaving a will proved in 1717.

Robert Coleman born 1656 as evidenced by his depositions given in 1712. See Deed and Will book 13, page 76. Essex County, VA, records. His first appearance in available records is a signer of the "New Kent Petition" in 1688. 41 VA. mag. of hist. and biog. , page 196, et seq. He was probably living in New Kent County at that time. The records of New Kent County have been destroyed, therefore, nothing further has been ascertained about the life of Robert Coleman until he moved into Old Rappahannock County. By deed dated Jan. 22, 1688, Robert Coleman and Leonard Chamberlain, as joint tenants, acquired a tract of land in Old Rappahannock County. Deed Book 9, page 70 Old Rappahannock County Records. "Essex County Clerk's Office, Virginia". (The records of Old Rappahannock County and Essex County are intact, therefore, from 1688, the year Robert Coleman entered the area, until his death in 1713, much can be determined as to his activities and position in the community of his residence.

He was licensed to keep an ordinary at Hobbs Hole (now Tappahannock) by order entered April 10, 1693. Order book 1, page 176. Essex County Records. He operated this ordinary for the remainder of his life.
Robert Yard of Gloucester County appointed him as his attorney. Orders 1692-1695, page 143. Essex County Records.

From 1704 he was referred to as Captain Robert Coleman. Order Book 3, page 147 and subsequent order books. Essex County records.

He died in Essex County, and his will was admitted to probate August 13, 1713. Will book 13, page 439. Essex County records.

9. DANIEL2 COLEMAN (ROBERT1 COLEMAN*) was born in Of Gloucester, VA 1662. DANIEL died June 7, 1722 in King & Queen Co., VA, at 59 years of age.
He married an unknown person. Daniel Coleman was a landowner and living in King and Queen County, Va., in 1704. See rent rolls of King and Queen county, VA, Colonial Abstracts by Beverly Fleet. The records of King and Queen County and king William county have been destroyed; therefore information concerning the life and activities of Daniel Coleman is fragmentary. It is established that he and Samuel Williams as joint tenants acquired 600 acres of land on Hunting Creek in King William county, October 23, 1703. Pat. book 9, page 549. Then by grant of June 6, 1714, Daniel Coleman and John Madison, as joint tenants, acquired 2000 acres of land in the forks of the Mattaponi River, lying in King and Queen and King William counties. 28 Virginia Colonial Abstracts, Beverly Fleet, page 9. The name of Daniel's wife has not been determined. He died in King and Queen County prior to June 7, 1722, for on that date an affidavit of John Wood was presented in the King William County Court, stating that John Wood had divided the land owned by Daniel Coleman, then deceased, and Samuel Williams. The order recites that the affidavit was presented by Daniel Coleman, son of the deceast Daniel Coleman. 27 Virginia Colonial Abstracts by Beverly Fleet, page 19.

+ 38 ii. JAMES COLEMAN.

Some Notes on the Coleman Family of Caroline County, VA ; by George H. S. King.
Robert Coleman resided in Drysdale Parish, King and Queen County and by 1745 moved to Caroline County. While a resident of King & Queen he married on 26 January 1702/3 Mary Clayton, daughter of Samuel and Susannah Clayton of Gloucester and King & Queen counties. Robert Coleman was doubtless a man of affairs though the loss of the county records leaves definite facts very scanty. The land office records show he was granted patents for a considerable acreage. The will of Robert Coleman was presented in Caroline County Court 13 May 1748 by Spilsbe Coleman, one of the executors therein named, and was ordered recorded.

ROBERT COLEMAN and MARY CLAYTON had the following family:

45 ii. ANN COLEMAN was born February 18, 1707.
46 iii. SUSANNA COLEMAN was born October 24, 1709. This Susanna probably died as an infant. It was not uncommon to give the same name to the next child born of the same gender.
47 iv. SUSANNA COLEMAN was born October 18, 1710.

37. SAMUEL3 COLEMAN (DANIEL2, ROBERT1 COLEMAN*) birth date unknown.
He married ANNE MOURNING CHRISTIAN.

39. DANIEL3 COLEMAN JR. (DANIEL2, ROBERT1 COLEMAN*) birth date unknown. DANIEL died 1769/1770.
He married PATIENCE ELLIOTT. Patience executed her will July 18, 1771, and it was admitted to probate August 26, 1771. Will book 2, page 41. Cumberland county, Va., records. In addition to her children, she mentions the following grandchildren: William, Daniel, Giulimus and Parmens, sons of her son, Thomas Coleman, Gideon Edwards and Patience Terry Simms and one great-grandson, Elliott G. Coleman. Daniel Coleman appears to have lived in King William County until 1745, for by deed dated May 28, 1745, William Holladay conveyed 400 acres of land in Goochland county to Daniel Coleman of King William county. Deed book 5, page 15, Goochland county, Va. Records. This tract was in that part of Goochland county, which became Cumberland county in 1749. He remained in this county until his death which occurred in late 1769 or early 1770, for his will dated August 29, 1763, was admitted to probate in Cumberland County, Va., January 22, 1770. The executors named in his will were his son Daniel, a grandson, William Coleman, and a son-in-law, Nathan Glen. Will book 2, page 4. Cumberland county, Va. Records. He devised his home place, consisting of 300 acres, to his grandson, William Coleman, and lands, which he owned in Halifax county, Va., to his grandson, Gideon Edwards. The remainder of his property was directed to be divided among his nine children.
