   Notes on Clayton Genealogy
Clayton family of VA, NC, TN, AR. Allied families include: Allen, Bumpass, Burton, Carver, Clark, Clayton, Crews, Crouch, Gray, Looney, McIlroy, Owen, Stubblefield, Way
The Clayton's came to the United States early, according to other researchers, there were five distinct Clayton Families that first arrived here. They helped settle the early colonies, primarily Virginia and North Carolina then began to move west.

Daniel Clayton Sr.

From North Carolina they moved to Tennessee, then Mississippi. Eventually, they encompassed the United States from coast to coast. They have served this country in every major war, beginning with the Revolutionary War. Beginning with the 20th century they started diversifying, taking other occupations. In the early days they helped establish towns and communities. They have indeed lived the history of our great nation and made positive contributions to the establishment of this country. They settled new country and made it grow and prosper.

Ann Clayton does not appear on Colonial Virginia records until 1746, she is then found listed as head of household on the ST. James Northam Parish tithing list. The list indicates that Daniel Clayton died before 1746, and Ann represented on these lists for several years was his surviving widow. ( According to Coleman' s Diary, it states Daniel was neighbor of his (Richard Coleman) in 1752. SOURCES: 1. "Daniel Clayton of Virginia and His Descendants," by Jim Clayton of Burlington, NC. 1996.
Daniel , his earliest incounter as a witness in 1732, to a letter of attorney from St. Martin's Parish, Hanover County, VA. By 1740, he has become a grantee for land on Gold Mine Creek, land that is partly in Hanover and partly in Goochland County, VA.

2. JOHN2 CLAYTON SR. (DANIEL1 CLAYTON*) was born in Hanover, Goochland, Va. 1735. JOHN died in 1800 at 65 years of age. His body was interred in Allenville, Person County N.C.

1. "Daniel Clayton of Virginia and His Descendants," by Jim Clayton of Burlington, NC. 1996
John Clayton was indentured to Abraham Sandifur of Cumberland County, VA in 1749., he was to learn brick laying. By 1758 John had migrated to North Carolina.
A Goochland County, VA deed reveals John Clayton's inheritance of land on Gold Mine Creek before Feb. 17th, 1761. In this deed John states that his "father, Daniel Clayton," now deceased willed him this land. John later sold this land to Richard Clayton. In 1767 Richard the land that he had bought from his brother.
John settled on Six Pound Creek in present day Warren County, North Carolina He was soon joined by Thomas. Sons Daniel and Richard made Little River Creek their home--in today's northern Granville County.
The four brothers had relocated by 1780. They moved a few miles west to a part of old Caswell County, North Carolina that in 1792 became Person. They settled near Roxboro the present day county seat. With Roxboro as center, a circle with a radius of four miles encompassed most of the early Clayton homesteads. [I.]
After coming to Caswell County John, Thomas and Richard claimed land on the headwaters of Mayo Creek. It is thought John was a carpenter and bricklayer.

John Clayton, Sr. disappeared from Person records after 1798. His wife Elizabeth, sister of Susannah and Sarah Coleman, was named "widow" on a Flat River Primitive Baptist Church membership roll in 1806. John and Elizabeth Coleman Clayton's daughters are believed to be Nancy, who married John Carver in 1808, and Betsey who married Wyatt Painter in 1810. Their sons were John, Jr., Coleman, William, Daniel and Solomon Clayton, Sr.
William and Daniel were recorded "son of John" by Person County clerics and recorders. Solomon was identified Solomon Clayton, "Sr." creating distinction between himself, his son Solomon, Jr. and his nephew Solomon Clayton, Jr. and his nephew Solomon T. Clayton, son of William.
John and Elizabeth Clayton's sons stayed in Person County. Why they did is not completely clear. John, Jr. and Coleman were older than their cousins were. John, Jr. died in 1833. Coleman and his brother Daniel "son of John" died in 1839. William "son of John" died in 1840. Solomon, Sr., apparently the youngest son, died in 1849. Age and its effect on endurance needed for migration could have been factors.

Four children of the Thos. Clayton Family was named in Petition of Thos. Walbon-against: Thomas, Daniel, Richard, and William Clayton, Person Co., NC May 1824 Court Term, and was published in the Raleigh Register for a three week period. Ref.: Raleigh Archives.
After coming to Caswell County John, Thomas and Richard claimed land on the headwaters of Mayo Creek. Daniel, Sr. settled an additional claim made by his brother Thomas on nearby Richland Springs Creek. These Clayton's farmed tobacco. According to family tradition, Thomas was also a merchant and tradesman. Some of his trading trips extended into coastal North Carolina where he sold twist tobacco and perhaps other merchandise.
Thomas Clayton died in 1791 while on a trading trip to Edenton, North Carolina. He was buried in that coastal city. His wife was Sarah Coleman a sister of Richard's wife Susannah. Thomas and Sarah Coleman Clayton's daughters were Mary, Patsey, Sarah, and Nancy. Their sons were William, Thomas Jr., Daniel and Richard. That he died seized and possessed of 257 and acres of land or thereabouts on the head-waters of Mayo Creek adjoining the lands of David Allen, John Yarborough and others in the County, of Person aforesaid. That Sarah Clayton, the widow of the said intestate departed life sometime in the fall of 1823 and that on the 15th. of Feb. 1814 or thereabouts your petitioner purchased the undivided part of said lands belonging to said Richard Clayton at the sale made and held by the Sheriff of Person County to satisfy an execution or executions in his hands against the estate, of the said Richard. And your petitioner further states that he also, for a valuable consideration purchased in trust of the said William Clayton in and to said tract of land, and that the said Daniel was advanced in the lifetime of the said Thomas Clayton deceased-to the full share of the lands of said intestate, so that your petitioner and said Thomas Clayton, are at this time the only tenants in common of this tract of land, your petitioner holding two thirds thereof and the said Thomas one third thereof. This was written in the year 1824 and the petitioner, Thomas Walton, asked the Court to appoint five men to divide the land. Also on this document the following: "Copies to Thomas and Daniel in Person. Publication three weeks in the Milton Register as to William and Richard Clayton who reside beyond the bounds of this state".
Copied from the original at the NC State Library in Raleigh Person Co., NC Estate Records. Copied by: Jim Clayton of Burlington, NC THOMAS CLAYTON.

Thomas Clayton is believed to have been born about 1751 in (Chesterfield Co.?) VA. He came to Caswell Co., NC from VA around 1779-1784. He married Sarah Coleman, d/o Richard Coleman.
The following is from a letter written 19 May1932 by Charles Fisher Clayton of Tarboro, NC to his brother Thomas in Roxboro, NC. They were great-great grandsons of Thomas.
"One Thomas Clayton I, who married a Miss Coleman, settled at our old home place in then Caswell Co., in 1791.........this deed is recorded in Yancyville, Caswell Co. He had four sons, to wit: Richard, Thomas, Phillip, and Daniel.....Phillip moved to KY. The original Thomas Clayton was a trader and died in Edenton, NC on one of his trading trips and was buried there. His wife was buried at the old home place. This tract of land has been in the Clayton family since 1791." Notice there is no mention of a son named William. But it has been proven there was a son named William. We speculate that the Phillip mentioned here comes in later, and William was forgotten.

THOMAS CLAYTON* and SARAH COLEMAN* had the following family:

20 i. PATSEY3 CLAYTON. She married ROBERT CATE.

Richard Clayton stayed on Virginia home place until 1767, then he and his wife Susannah sold it to William and Hannah Barnett. They soon migrated south to Granville, joining their families already there.
After coming to Caswell County John, Thomas and Richard claimed land on the headwaters of Mayo Creek. Daniel, Sr. settled an additional claim made by his brother Thomas on nearby Richland Springs Creek. These Claytons farmed tobacco.
Richard died in 1777, not long after coming to old Caswell. His estate settlement revealed a promising North Carolina planter. He and his wife Susannah Coleman Clayton had four children.
