her being very sick and my mom taking care of her. I remember after
she died when they had her casket in the parlor, I was told that
grandma was sleeping by a friend of the family. I had not known until
in my early teens that grandma Reed's name was Clementine, I was
singing "My Darling Clementine" and my dad starting crying, when I
asked why he was crying, Mom told me it was grandma's middle name.

Grandpa Reed, John William Reed was born January 2, 1875 IL. Married my grandmother, Permelia Clementine Smith, October 2, 1895. Grandpa died 1948 when this writer was 7 years old. I remember grandpa as being small built and walked with a cane, I can remember stoping by his house after school (when he was living in Malden, MO). He would give me money to go buy him a chew of tobacco and enough that I could get me a nickle box of peanuts. Grandpa Reed and I would walk over to the Malden Railroad Depot to watch my dad's train come in to the switching yards. I didn't get to know him for very long, but he was always a good grandpa to me. In grandpa's older years, my mom took care of him as would she had done for her own dad. (See Story by Otis Reed son of John William Reed)

Notes for OTIS EDWIN REED:
Rector was a Thriving Frontier Town 1909
This was a story written by Otis E. Reed and Published by the "Clay
County Democrat March 27, 1969.
It was in 1909 my family lived on a small southern Illinois farm. I
was the youngest of three boys but can very will remember the struggle
my parents was having trying to eke out a meger survival for their
small family.
My dad along with several other families decided to move just a little
farther west. Some decided to make the trip by coverd wagons taking
what belongings they could load on and still have room for their
family
including their dogs.
Dad called his little family together to decide the best way to make
the trip west...Dad thought the grass was a little greener west of the
Mississippi River.
It didn't take mother long to decide that the covered wagon trip was
out, and we would sell out lock-stock and barrel, so to speak, and
make the trip by train. It didn't take long for Dad to dispose of our
belongings and get all set for the train trip which was a great thrill
for me and my brothers, as we had never been on a train before.
The trip from the little Illinois town to the Mississippi River seemed
like a thousand miles, as it was the first time I had ever been out of
the little community where I was born.
I very will recall pulling into Cairo, IL., It looked like a war zone.
There had been trouble the night before we arrived and the State
Militia lined the streets with full battle gear. Mother and Dad
grabbed our hands and we took off toward the river and the boat docks
where we would board the boat to take the trip to the west side of the
Mississippi.
I had heard my uncle talk about the United States Occupation of Cuba
in 1906, after seeing all the soldiers at Cairo I asked my dad if we
would go through Cuba on the way to our destination.
Dad had heard of a boom in Arkansas. He felt just might be the place
for him to settle down with his little family. Mother was always
satisfied any place so long as we could all be together.
The first place we stopped off was in St. Francis, ARkansas, a river
town where we knew some friends. We spent a few days there and moved
on.
Dad had heard that there was a boom around Rector, ARk...such as
timber cutting, land clearing, logging, and building, so he would try
his luck in Rector.
So we rolled into town. It wasn't long until he had his family settled
down in a strange place, among strange people. Dad being a carpenter,
it wasn't long until he had a job for himself and my oldest brother
(WH).
