There are many groups associated with the Bumpass line. Most of our information came from these sources. Our line begins with Robert Bumpass (1695) from VA to Caswell, Person County, NC. It was Moses Bumpass who raised several of the Clayton boys after their father died at an early age. The family then moves to Hardeman County, TN and Tippah County, MS
John Bumpass
The Bumpass branches to the family tree is a distinguished branch. They came to this country in the early sixteen hundreds and settled in New England, Massachusetts. They were primarily farmers, although, they were some bricklayers and masons included. They and the Clayton have moved around the country together for awhile. Several Bumpass's married Clayton's and visa verse. They to served the United States in every major war, they to had to contend with the hostile Native Americans, and help carve a new nation from the wilderness. They were large landowners and helped establish towns and communities as well. The Bumpass family lived close to the Clayton family in Virginia and elsewhere. The two families had close ties and lived near each other well into the eighteen hundreds.

There is no record of her death but she was living on the date of her husband's will. John was before the court on June 8, 1651 for idle and lascivious behavior and was "sentenced to be whipt" (Plymouth Colony Court Orders 2:170). He took the oath of fidelity in Marshfield in 1657. On May 1, 1663 John Bumpass... sold to his brother Joseph ... a tract of land near Nemasket and Winatuxert (Middleboro-Plympton) "1/2 of all such lands appertaining to me as well as all after allotments and divisions excepting I do reserve whole and entire unto myself my mistead or house lot" (Plymouth Colony Deeds 3:1:60)..... in 1676 his house and barn were burned by Indians. . .date of will and probatre in Onslow Co. book 4:56, which names sons David, Cornelius and John, each receiving large tracts of land, and daughter Abigail Lewis. There is proof in Plymouth Deeds 28:44 that Job had a wife Abigail but her parentage was not found nor thier marriage record nor births of thier children, but it is evident from the date of his will and the fact that he had a married daughter by 1746 that all were probably born in Rochester before 1720 or thereabouts. He was still of Rochester September 19, 1730 when he sold to his nephew Ebenezer Bumpass a certain tract of land in Rochester; acknowledged the same day, recorded July 28, 1733. Previous to that date he had sold parcels of his land and probably by 1733, soon after the deed was recorded, removed to Carolina.
