Well... here we are once again. Another year, and another soundtrack in my life. Unlike last year's list, this year's didn't feel like an eternal struggle to put together. There is a clear cut top song and a wide variety of styles and influences on the countdown that I think all of the readers of this site will enjoy thoroughly. As usual, I'll start the list with the top 10 "Old School" songs then we'll get to the top 37 immediately after.

JT'S TOP 10 "OLD SCHOOL" SONGS OF 2005
10)Milton - I Can See it in Your Eyes
A techno dance song no one has any clue about except for myself an 4 other people on Earth, this songs makes the countdown purely on the rediculous music video alone.
9)DHT - Listen to Your Heart (Techno Original)
LITTLE KNOWN FACT: THIS SONG WAS RELEASED LIKE YEARS AGO BEFORE THE PIANO VERSION WAS RELEASED THIS YEAR!!!!!
8)Usher - U Make Me Wanna
You can never go wrong with old-school Usher.
7)Journey - Lights
Sorry Sox fans, but this Journey song is way stronger than the temporarily trendy "Don't Stop Believin'".
6)Collective Soul - Shine
New Pro-Tyme had their 90's Alternative burned cd put in at it's opening.
5)Semisonic - Closing Time
This song goes out to the closing of Old Orland and the end of an era for Barry and Sumo.
4)Sister Hazel - Your Mistake
I've been meaning to put this on a top 10 for a very very long time now. Only this year am I actually remembering.
3)Lynyrd Skynryd - Simple Man
Old school song of the summer. The last enjoyable song at Orland Pro-Tyme Billiards.
2)Brand New - The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows
A top song a few years ago, the cleverness and originality of the lyrics make this very much a top flight song, overall.
1)Something Corporate - Watch the Sky
To Andrew McMahon and his fight and to the rest of us with our mundane and unimportant problems, all you gotta do is "watch the sky..."

JT'S TOP 37 SONGS OF 2005
The Back 17
37)The Starting Line - Stay Right Where I Can See You
36)Hawthorne Heights - Ohio is For Lovers
35)Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends
34)Tommy Lee - Good Times
33)Relient K - Who I Am Hates Who I've Been
32)The Killers - Somebody Told Me
31)Nickelback - Photograph
30)Chris Brown - Run It
29)Kanye West - Diamonds
28)The Game - Dreams
27)The Starting Line - Ready
26)Ying Yang Twins feat. Mike Jones - Badd
25)Natasha Bedingfield - These Words
24)Lovehammers - Trees
23)Scott Stapp - The Great Divide
22)Anna Nalick - Breathe (2AM)
21)Lil Rob - Summer Nights
The Absolute Best 20
20)The Spill Canvas - Sunsets and Car Crashes
"So we seal the deal in the parking lot with a kiss..."
This is definitely one of those reall solid finds on Absolutepunk.net that I'm quite proud of. They're as whiny as Dashboard without all of that glitzy MySpace, mainstream MTV sellout aura.
19)Owen - Everyone Feels Like You
"Tell your dad to come on over and we'll talk, you bring your drinks, I'll bring the 'fuck yous'..."
2 parts to this song. The first part acknowledges depression over heartache and the 2nd part fights it. It's quite good. Definitely not the first time on the top 20 you'll be seeing an Owen song.
18)50 Cent - Hate It or Love It (G-Unit Remix)
"Go ahead and envy me, I'm rap's MVP..."
Forget The Game's version. This one is bigger, badder, longer, and has all of G-Unit involved! You'll find this rare gem on 50 Cent's album at the end.
17)Jack's Mannequin - Holday From the Real
"We'd waste our weeks beneath the sun, we'd fry our brains and say it's so much fun out here..."
Track 1 of the best album of the year, Andrew McMahon documents lost love in his home town of Venice, California.
16)Owen - In the Morning, Before Work
"Put your hands on my back, kiss the back of my neck..."
The 2nd Owen song I ever heard thanks to Ms. Pakla, there isn't a better song describing the morning after habits after a night of lovey-doveyness.
15)Jack's Mannequin - Kill the Messenger
"And get to church cuz you're a good girl, and I never told you that..."
Officially the first Jack's Mannequin song I liked due to the awesome (but low volumed) acoustic version. Andrew's voice shows a lot of emotion in this one.
14)Alkaline Trio - Time to Waste
"I had time to kill, it's dead and burried..."
Welcome to the Chicago portion of the countdown. Congrats to Alkaline on the success of their first heavily radioplayed song.
13)Rise Against - Swing Life Away
"We live on front porches and swing life away..."
Can't say I'm 100% a fan of the band, but for this song, the simplicity, and the cheesiness of the lyrics, I can say I'm 100% a fan of the song. This one goes out to Mike Radke and our end of summer Eastern trip and the venting of the world's weight in frustration.
12)Owen - She's a Thief
"She's a thief with an eye for nice things..."
Here we are 3 Owen songs into the countdown and they just keep getting better and better. No shock this is Ms. Pakla's favorite Owen song. This one goes out to all the girls that I love with horrible, horrible intentions.
11)Maria Taylor - Hitched
"You're worth any compromise.."
This chick's voice is just absolutely captivating and hypotizing. That's all I can really say about this song.
10)Owen - Nobody's Nothing
"I never asked to be nobody's nothing..."
Here we come to the Owen song with what is probably now my all time favorite song lyric (as seen above). You can really see the genuineness of this unrealistically talented musician.
9)Fall out Boy - Sugar, We're Goin' Down
"I'm just a notch in your bedpost, and you're just a line in a song..."
So catchy, they played it on Kiss FM and The Mix. THE MIX?????
8)Taking Back Sunday - This Photograph is Proof (I Know Youw Know)
"Well I know you know, everything..."
Hard-hitting, heavy, screaming, pure, energy. That's about it and that's about all it needs to be this high on the countdown.
7)The Killers - Mr. Brightside
"It was only a kiss, it was only a kiss..."
Not initially a fan of this band or this song, but it grew on me just like Puddle of Mudd's "Blurry" grew on me a few years ago. The Killers is just another example of original talent coming from The UK.
6)Owen - Skin and Bones
"This is regretably who we are, to others..."
And here we are at the centerpiece of the 5 Owen songs on the countdown. This was the first song I ever heard from them and I would now like to take the opportunity to thank Victoria Pakla for introducing me to them and accompanying me to a show. You're definitely a life changer there, kiddo.
5)Silverstein - Discovering the Waterfront
"I'm tired of the lying, tired of fighting you..."
Back to back years this band has put up a top 5 song. Maybe it's about time I actually picked up their albums. Haha.
4)Jimmy Eat World - Work
"Can't say I was never wrong, but some blame rests on you..."
This band just keeps putting out phenomenal work even after their "sellout". Even though this song didn't get much radio play, it might be the best of them all in terms of context.
3)Ben Folds - Landed
"We'd hit the bottom, I thought it was my fault, and in a way I guess it was..."
Did this group drop the "Five" from their name because someone quit the band or something? I dunno, but anyway, this song is just as good as their single "Brick" they put out so long ago
2)The Starting Line - Photography
"I'll swing front a streetlight, as I, sing..."
Easily the best ballad ever. Starts off slow, gets really catchy, then gets really really powerful and catchy. Could have easily been the best song of the year if it weren't for Mr. McMahon's masterpiece...
1)Jack's Mannequin - The Mixed Tape
"This is my mixed tape for her, it's like I wrote, every note, with my own fingers..."
How someone didn't come up with a song about a burned cd for a chick is beyond me. This one goes out to all my female friends who received a burned cd from me in 2005. I love you all with both good and bad intentions. LOL.

And there you have it. Simple, sweet, and probably the strongest countdown of The Essential era. If you would like the 2 cd set of this top 37, let me know and I'll get it out to you. Hopefully 2006 shall bring a great countdown as well. Until next year, take care and I love you all. |
