(Editor's Note: So I wasn't too happy with the list of songs that made it onto the countdown, so I threw in a bonus list of the top 10 "Old School" songs with "Old School" meaning songs that came out like over a year and a half ago. As for the actual countdown, I was quite disappointed with the amount of mainstream songs that made it on the list. But hey, if it was a bad year in the small music industry, it can only get better in 2005, right? Try and enjoy the lists.)

JT'S ESSENTIAL 10 "OLD SCHOOL" SONGS OF 2004

10)The 504 Boys featuring Mercedes - I Can Tell (You Wanna Fuck)
"You ain't gotta say too much, from the look in your eyes I can tell you wanna fuck....."
The ultimate casual sex scandalous song ever put out. Period. Not to mention the first of many great sing-a-long pool hall songs on the countdown.

9)DJ Fast Eddie - Booty Call
"Oh hell no! I think I got a booty call!...."
This song is going to make a phenomenal ringer on my Nextel.

8)P.O.D. - Thinking About Forever
"I'm thinking about forever... missing you....."
This one goes out there to Eamon Walsh. This one is probably the softest, most un-P.O.D. like song you can imagine, but it's awesome nonetheless.

7)Collective Soul - Shine
"Haven't let your light shined out....."
I just about punched Barry in the face when he said he never heard of this song before this year until Gauls informed him of it and put it on a cd in the jukebox. Even the high school kids out there should love this early 90s alternative classic.

6)Bush - Glycerine
"Don't let the days go by, could I been easier on you....."
Sitting around smoking a cigerette listening to this song, humming along, and singing the words is probably one of the most nourishing things in this world.

5)The Eagles - Desperado
"Now it seems to me, some fine things, have been laid up on your table, but you only want the ones that you can't get....."
Go kill yourself if you're a man and you don't like this song. I'm just kidding. But question your emotional intelligence highly if you don't like this song.

4)Stroke 9 - Little Black Backpack (acoustic)
"Don't wanna tangle with you. I'd rather tangle with him. I think I'm gonna bash his head in....."
I was a big fan of this one hit wonder band back in 2000 or so. The regular version of this song was awesome and probably the song of the year in 2000 if there was a top 37 list. Thanks to Marlene DeAmicis for introducing me to this version.

3)Shai - Freak Me
"Let me lick you up and down, til you say 'stop'....."
The ultimate Sumo song. Take some time to really study the suggestive lyrics and you'll know why this is the ultimate player/baller seduction song out there.

2)B.I.G. featuring Bone Thugs and Harmony - Let's Ride
"Armed and dangerous. Ain't too many can bang with us....."
Arguably the most popular pool hall rap song of all time. I remember getting pumped to this song before Ken Beaver and I crushed Kyle and Ryan for $80.

1)Something Corporate - Konstantine
"This is to a girl who got into my head with all the fucked up things she did....."
10 minutes of piano rock with sad, longing lyrics that are enough to make all the little emo babies of the world cry like little bitches. Nonetheless, this is a phenomenal song.

JT'S ESSENTIAL 37 SONGS OF 2004
(Here are 17 songs of note...)

37)Switchfoot - Dare You To Move
36)Maroon 5 - This Love
35)Crime Mob - White Tee
34)Lil Scrappy - No Problem
33)Lil Wayne - Go DJ
32)Trick Daddy featuring Ludacris and Lil John - Let's Go
31)Taking Back Sunday - A Decade Under the Influence
30)Taking Back Sunday - This Photograph is Proof (I Know You Know)
29)Straylight Run - Tool Sheds and Hot Tubs
28)Nickelback - Someday
27)Matchbox 20 - Bright Lights
26)Straylight Run - Your Name Here (Sunrise Highway)
25)Santana featuring Alex Band - Why Don't You and I
24)Green Day - Boulevard of Broken Dreams
23)J-Kwon - Tipsy
22)Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated
21)Hoobastank - The Reason

(...and here's the cream of the crop.)

20)Eamon - Don't Want You Back
"'Fuck you' you ho. I don't want you back....."
I don't know if I would shake the hand of the chick that inspired this song, or slap the shit out of the bitch for being the prime example of all that is wrong with women.....

19)Jet - Are You Gonna Be My Girl
"Now I could see you home with me, but you were with another man....."
Catchy rock riffs and simple lyrics are enough to put this song on the countdown.

18)Story of the Year - Until the Day I Die
"Should I bite my tongue, til blood soaks my shirt....."
I probably disappointed many people out there with this song being so low on the list, but the truth of the matter is the whole "guy longing for the girl" theme is wearing quite thin. Nonetheless, this is a damn good song. If this song came out very early last year, it'd probably make the top 10 of 2003.

17)Three Days Grace - (I Hate) Everything About You
"I hate everything about you. Why do I love you?...."
I think this song sums of everything that guys think about the female gender. We love and hate the bitches all at the same time, now don't we?...."

16)Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
"If I could find you now, things would get better. We could leave this town and run forever....."
Another one of those songs that most people will probably want to rank higher, but it falls very similar to the previous 2 songs on the list. Oh yeah. And if you look ahead to the countdown, there's a slight rap takeover. But to sum the song up itself: It's fun and heartfelt and pretty much made Yellowcard mainstream. It played on Kiss 103.5 for God's sake!

15)My Chemical Romance - I'm Not Okay (I Promise)
"I'm not okay. I'm not o-fucking-kay....."
For all the times that you wanna punch the next kid that asks you if you're okay. Just stick the kid next time and scream "I'M NOT O-FUCKING-KAY! STOP ASKING ME ALREADY!"

14)Petey Pablo - Freak-a-Leek
"Do you want it from the back with your face in the pillow so you can yell as loud as you want to?...."
What a dirty dirty song. Petey can sing about sexual positions like no other.

13)Mark Oh featuring Digital Rockers - Because I Love You
"Because I love you, and I'd do anything. I'd give you my heart. My everything....."
The remix to the Stevie B classic. Thanks to Marco "Scumbag" Foster for introducing me to the music video and this phenomenal remix. All the club bitches out there should eat this one up.

12)Kanye West - The New Workout Plan
"Oooh girl your silouette, make me wanna light a cigerette....."
Best exercise song of all time. The music video is absolutely hilarious and watching chicks limbo and work out to this song is just plain damn fucking hot.

11)Linkin Park - Breaking the Habit
"I don't want to be the one the battles always choose. Cuz inside I realize that I'm the one confused....."
Another song with an awesome music video (I'm a big anime fan. Yeah I'll admit it.). This is by far my favorite Linkin Park song with it's insightful, intelligent lyrics and bad ass beats.

10)Usher featuring Lil John and Ludacris - Yeah
"Next thing I knew, she was all up on me screamin' 'YEAH!'....."
The reinging pool hall dance anthem, Kyle Lucky and JP absolutely carve up the floor when this song hits the juke box.

9)Crucial Conflict - In the Circle
"Take a little ride downtown Lake Shore Drive tryin' to clear my mind....."
Crucial Conflict is the best rap group all you B96 and Kiss 103.5 babies never heard of. This group is from Chicago obviously with it's "Chi-town" and "Lake Shore Drive" lyrics. All of you start listening to Power 92.3 so you can get yourself some hardcore ghetto culture.

8)Seether featuring Amy Lee - Broken
"I wanna hold you high, and steal your pain. Cuz I'm broken....."
The version without Amy Lee absolute sucks balls. But this version has some power and some emotion behind it. Seether and Amy Lee are a good couple and you can see it in the chemistry of the song.

7)Tesla - Caught Up in a Dream
"I'm caught up in what seems simply impossible. I'm ain't gonna change a thing. No way. It's my dream....."
Saw these guys at Loop Fest over the summer with the Beaver children (Aimee, Jacqui, Ken, Joe), Muj, and Andrew. Quite frankly they weren't all that good. I don't even recall them playing this song. But hey, it's a great fucking song and quite inspiring too.

6)Evenescense - My Immortal
"There's just too much that time cannot time cannot erase....."
What a sad sad song. This was almost the song of the year until I realized just how pathetic that would be if that actually happened. Anyway, this song playing while I was all down and shitty during the months of March and April probably did nothing but make me even more emotionally retarded than I already was. But nonetheless, there's a lot of memory tied to this song, and just for that, it's the 6th best song of the year.

5)John Mayer - Bigger Than My Body
"Some day I'll fly. Some day I'll soar. Some day I'll be something much more....."
This song is quite the opposite of the Evenescense song. It's happy, upbeat, positive, and therefore one up on every song except for 4. Whenever I'm in a phenomenal mood, I look for this song. It's quite healthy for me, don't you think?

4)Silverstein - Smashed to Pieces
"And if my lungs still let me breathe, would you be there for me?...."
Ah yes. A song few of you have actually heard of. First heard on the Victory Records cd sampler that came with the brand new Straylight Run cd, I fell in love with the song right off the bat. It felt good to actually listen to decent music from a band I never heard of since things were going dry for a few months. It's a little different sounding with the un-understandable screaming, but the lyrics are absolutely outstanding when you can actually understand what the guy is saying.

3)Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
"I don't mind spending every day, out on your corner in the pouring rain....."
For all those guys that would do anything to love a girl and have them love back, Maroon 5 hit the jackpot with this song. But why does the lead singer want the hot chick's mom in the music video?....

2)Lostprophets - Last Train Home
"Sing without a reason to ever fall in love....."
And here we are in the top 2. You're looking at the first of 2 reasons why this list took so long to publish. This song and the song better than it were battling for the #1 spot in my head for like 2 weeks. I think in the end the fact that the album that this song came on was only average hurt the standing of this song. But if that sounds unfair to you, just call this catchy, screamy, rock song #1a instead of #2.....

1)Straylight Run - Existentialism on Prom Night
"Sing like you think no one's listening....."
.....but since this song was #1 last year, why not make it #1 for a 2nd year in a row. The fact of the matter is this is probably my most favorite song of all time and while it wasn't the #1 song of the moment most of the year like "Last Train Home" was, this song was always kicking at the list pretty much every day and every week. Not to mention Straylight Run finally got their album released under Victory Records and are having an outstanding go at it on tour. These former Taking Back Sunday members are on the absolute brink of superstardom. Now if these guys can get some national radio play in 2005 this song might be the 3 time "Essential Song of the Year" in 2005.....

So there you go folks. This was by far the weakest top songs list of the 4 that I put out, but I think there's enough on here to feed some of your cravings. Anyway, as always, you can request the 2 disc set of the top 37 and the top 10 "Old School". CD burning technology is absolutely phenomenal. All you gotta do is IM me at ItsOnlyJT or email me or sign the guest book or look for me in person or something, and I'll take whatever request you would like. Thank you for wasting your valuable time reading this list and I'll see you all in 2005.
