JT'S ESSENTIAL 37 SONGS OF 2002:
Why 37? Cuz no one thinks to pick 37 songs. That's why.
Here are 17 songs that deserve my recognition:
37)Blink 182 - Stay Together for the Kids
36)Incubus - Nice to Know You
35)New Found Glory - Head on Collision
34)Avril Lavigne - Complicated
33)Hoobastank - Running Away
32)New Found Glory - My Friends Over You
31)3 Doors Down - When I'm Gone
30)Avril Lavigne - I'm With You
29)Tantric - Mourning
28)Sugarcult - Pretty Girl (The Way)
27)Red Hot Chili Peppers - By the Way
26)A Simple Plan - I'd Do Anything (feat. Mark Hoppus)
25)Box Car Racer - I Feel So
24)Finch - Letters to You
23)The Used - Taste of Ink
22)Kylie Minogue - Can't Get You Outta My Head
21)Dashboard Confessional - Hands Down
And here are the 20 songs that made a difference in my life in 2002:
20)Jack Johnson - Flake
April 2002 over Spring Break, I was in the car with Beth Samonski, Megan Balas, and Erika Dely. I heard this song and I loved it. It would rank higher if only people didn't make such a huge deal out of this song and misread its meaning. This song is also found in the last season of "Felicity".
19)Stone Sour - Bother
I never realized this song was on the Spider Man soundtrack until I heard it on it at the pool hall tonight. Unfortunately, this is the only acoustic song put out by this group. That's too bad because they could rival Dashbaord Confessional if they stuck with it.
18)Lifehouse - Spin
I was wrong about Lifehouse being a 1 hit wonder, and while this is no "Hanging By A Moment", it's a great song in its own right.
17)Our Lady Peace - Somewhere Out There
The best song put out by this band. This song sticks with a lot of common motifs found on this list. Figure it out.
16)Box Car Racer - There Is
The best songs are personal. This song is personal to any guy in the world who thinks about his relationships deeply. Probably could be ranked higher.
15)Justincase - Don't Cry For Us
This kid is like 14 or something. I saw this song on the Nick at Night or something. Didn't quite catch on like I thought it would, but it sure did catch on with me. If you like boy bands, go check this song out. It's really really good.
14)Sense Field - Save Yourself
A good wholesome song with a good message. Save yourself, kiddies. Some things are worth the wait.
13)Thursday - Understanding in a Car Crash
Thanks to Joe Leleika for introducing me to this band before they hit the mainstream. It's one of my favorite songs for a car ride, which is eerie cuz it's about a car crash obviously.....
12)Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness
Ahhh, the dreaded overplayed song. See the other Jimmy Eat World song 3 slots below.
11)Further Seems Forever - Snowbirds and Townies
A great song about long distance relationships... not that I know much about those. Haha. Everyone should go get this album so you can hear this band before Chris Carabba left.
10)Michelle Branch - All You Wanted
Lots of girly songs are just plain and utter bullshit to me, while others are actually somewhat decently OK. This song just so happens to be a hell of a lot better than somewhat decently OK. So which would you prefer. This song, or Faze 4's "Nowhere"?
9)Jimmy Eat World - The Middle
By far the most overplayed song of the year, and in the end, it did hurt its standing on this list. But we all know this is a better song than I am giving it credit for. See last year's top song list and Incubus's "Drive".
8)Chad Kroeger - Hero
Soundtrack of the year, on the most overhyped movie of the year (but it's still a great movie). I get the feeling this song sold the movie sometimes. I didn't know Chad Kroeger could write like this.
7)Puddle of Mudd - Blurry
I didn't like this song for a while, but then it just grew on me. Then it stuck even after the overplay. Does anyone know what he means when he says "Can you take it all the way? When you shoved it in my face?" Something to think about, isn't it?.....
6)Dashboard Confessional - Ender Will Save Us All (Summer's Kiss)
Chris Carabba picks up an electric guitar and plays the most powerful ending to a song in a very very long time. The ending is that good that this rather average song ranks this high.
5)Remy Zero - Save Me
The title theme to the TV show Smallville, this song is more than Superman coming to save the day, but rather, our friends and lovers coming to save us when we really really need saving.
4)Unwritten Law - Seeing Red
It's annoying when a band releases a great song, and you find that they have no other song that sounds like it. Unwritten Law has fallen under that category. Slow, hard, great voice, tangible lyrics, and power are the driving force of this song.
3)Hometown Hero - Eighteen
Lyrics so strong, it makes some people cry. Close your eyes and picture this guy in tears performing this song. It would be quite the sight.....
2)Further Seems Forever - New Year's Project
The best song ever to not hit the mainstream (and will never hit the mainstream), New Year's Project was Chris Carabba's first song that showed the power of his voice. This band is not the same without him, but good luck to this band in 2003 where they may make their mark with the first album release without the great Chris Carabba. Anyone wanna guess what the #1 song of the year for me is?......
1)Dashboard Confessional - Screaming Infidelities (The Places You Have Come Fear the Most)
Longevity is the key to making my list of essential songs. I need to be able to like a song even after it's been overplayed time and time again. After being merely the 10th best song last year, the greatness of the lyrics, the musician, and the entrance into the mainstream has made this not only my favorite song of the year, but my most favorite song of all time.
Hope this list makes you think. If you want me to burn this whole series for you, give me a buzz. See ya'll next year. -Love, JT. |
