Kelis Live in London
The wild and spirited Kelis performed at Londons' Shepherds Bush Empire and we went down to see if she can cut it live!
The 20 year old singer claims 'singing is my life', and her goal is 'to offer people something that's not already being captured in music today'.... With statements like that from someone so young and feisty facing a London audience may be a little daunting, but not for Kelis it seems...
It's testament to Kelis' talent that after just two singles and one critically acclaimed album she's playing to a packed house at The Empire for her first ever UK live show. The house lights went down, and the band members were introduced to the stage one by one by the MC...then the main attraction appeared - looking fantastic in trademark sunglasses and big, big hair.
She cuts quite an impressive figure image wise, but that's only part of the Kelis package because what this girl from Harlem is really about is talent and that voice. Capable of both screaming out the words to first song 'Mars' and then shifting down a gear or two for the gorgeous swing of 'Get Along With You' she makes it all look so effortless. Next up was 'Mafia', one of the highlights from her debut 'Kaleidoscope', complete with 'White Lines' intro and some excellent rapping. With only one albums' worth of material we were treated to some choice covers, and the first featured just Kelis and a keyboard on the Lionel Richie track 'Hello', which went straight into a killer version of 'Born To Be Wild'. The crowd were really moving now, perfect timing for the familiar refrain of 'I Hate You So Much Right Now' and a truly rocking version of 'Caught Out There'. The crowd were doing all of the 'shouty bits' with just a little encouragement from our favourite diva before she left the stage. There was no way she was going to get away that easily though, and it wasn't long before she was back for an extremely funky rendition of her latest hit 'Good Stuff' before bowing out with a surprise cover of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.
Kelis is a huge talent and on this night she didn't leave anyone in any doubt that we'll be seeing a lot more of her in the future.
