Walkthrough

Like Red, Blue, and Yellow, head next door to meet the local Professor. His name is Professor Utsugi and after a talk will let you choose one of three starting Pokémon: Chikorita the grass Pokémon, Cyndaquil the fire Pokémon, or Totodile the water Pokémon. Chikorita learns Razor Leaf at level 8, Cyndaquil has good defence, and Totodile has good moves. If you pick Cyndaquil he will pick Totodile, If you pick Totodile, he will pick Chikorita, and if you picked Chikorita he will pick Cyndaquil... Always picking your Pokemon's weakness. After choosing your starter Pokémon Utsugi will tell you that the machine in the corner heals Pokémon. Now head outside and head west.

Yoshino City

Next you'll want to try to find Professor Oak. You'll pass through a city called Yoshino City to get to him. When you first enter the city talk to the old man at the entrance. He will show you the town and then he'll give you a Map for your PokéGear when you go into his house and talk to him again. Next, go north. You'll eventually find him since one of the paths is blocked by two battling trainers. Oak will introduce himself and then give you a high-tech version of the Pokédex.
Professor Oak heals your Pokémon and then go outside.
Prof. Utsugi calls you and tells you to come back to Wakaba Town and that something terrible has happened. So go back to the place where you started off (head south from the lab and then east when you can't go south anymore).
When you get to the entrance of Yoshino (where you entered the city the first time) your rival will battle you, so i suggest you heal your Pokemon first.Head back and talk with Professor Utsugi to see what is going on. You'll then have to name your Rival. On your way out of the Lab, the Scientist at the bottom will give you 5 Pokéballs.
When you exit the city a man will want to show you how to use your new Pokéballs to catch Pokémon. You don't really need to know how to, but if you don't know how, let him. Now, go all the way back up to where the two trainers were blocking the path. Head to the city after that.

Kikyou City

After battling and capturing some of the new and old Pokémon, you can go to the Bellsprout Tower to make them stronger before you go to the Gym. Head north to find the you'll see it (it looks like a house with other houses on top of it. You'll encounter Monks with Bellsprouts and the a couple of Hoot-Hoots. At the top of the tower you see your Rival lose to the leader monk and run off after talking to you. The leader Monk has two Bellsprouts at Level seven and a Hoot-Hoot at level 10. If you beat the him, he will give you HM05, Flash. Now you're ready to take on the local gym leader, Hayato.

Kikyou City Gym

He uses bird Pokémon and is not difficult to defeat. He has a level 7 Pidgey and a level 9 Pidgeotto. I suggest you use a rock Pokemon like Onix (you can get him if you catch and trade a Bellsprout with a boy in the first house you see when you enter the town. The Onix will be the same level as the Bellsprout you trade for it and that Onix will get more exp points for beating Pokemon then any other Pokemon). Once you beat Hayato he will give you the Wing Badge. You will now be able to use Flash anytime and you will also get Mud Shadow.
After defeating Hayato, you will get a call that will tell you to go to the PokeCenter. When you get there, there will be a Scientist waiting. Talk to him and he will give you an Egg (you must have one slot open for it in your Pokémon lineup.)
The Egg will hatch after you walk a lot of steps. You can't store it in the PC because you won't be able to fish later in the game. The egg will hatch into a surprise Pokemon. There is a man blocking the most southern exit of this town and if you don't get the egg you can't get through.

Annondex
(Optional adventure)
Next head west through a building and then go south to get to a cave entrance. Go inside the first cave you see on the rught. Inside will be a puzzle that you have to put together. When you finish putting it together, you will find out that it is a Kabuto Puzzle. Now, you should drop through the floor and fall into the cave below. Inside are a bunch of Pokémon called Annon. They have no gender and they have many different shapes. Also, they all have the same Pokédex entry. If you catch three different forms, go up the ladder and out of the cave and a researcher will meet you there. He will give you the Annondex, which you can use by opening up the Pokedex Prof. Oak gave you and then pressing the SELECT button (it is a different button in different emulators. In No$GMB it is the Ctrl [Control] button on the keyboard and in SMYGB it is the Shift button). Then, It will show you another menu that has a new option: Annondex. Select it and it will show you how many different forms of Annon that you've caught and what they mean.
To unlock more shapes you will have to surf, use strength, and break rocks towards the 3 other entrances to the cave (Like the Kabuto one where there is a puzzle to solve.) You can find them by going through the cave between Hiwanda and Kickyou City. You will get Surf, TM 08, and Strength later in the game.

Old Rod

Next you'll encounter a PokéCenter in Route 32. Inside is a Fishing Guru, talk to him and you'll get yourself an Old Fishing rod. You won't be able to fish if you don't have the egg with you.
Continue on and you'll pass through a cave with Trainers and rock Pokémon inside. If you look on Friday nights you can find Lapras deep within the cave if you have Surf.

Hiwanda Town

After exiting the tunnel head west and you'll fight a couple more trainers. Then, you'll see Team Rocket members guarding a well and the local Gym. Team Rocket has kidnapped all the Slowpokes from the town.
First you'll need to talk to the man in the house right above the Gym. He'll move the Rocket member guarding the well. Next it's your turn to defeat the Rocket members. Once defeated, the Team Rocket member will run away from the Gym and you will now be able to fight Tsukushi.

Hiwanda Gym

Tsukushi uses 3 Bug Pokémon. He has a Metapod level 14, a Kakuna level 14, and a Scyther that's level 16. So if you chose Cyndaquil as your starter Pokémon you will really have the advantage, especially against Scyther.
Tsukushi will give you an Insect Badge which makes all Pokémon up to level 30 obey you. You will also get $1600 and TM49 (Continuous Cut). If you keep using it multiple times in a row in a battle your Pokemon will Cut more and more and it will take off more and more HP.
When you try to leave the town, your Rival will stop you and want to battle, so I suggest you heal your Pokemon before that.
He has a Gastly level 12, a Zubat level 14, and the Pokemon he stole at the beginning of the game that evolved and is level 16.

Ubame Forest
HM 01- Cut

After you leave the Hiwanda you'll enter a dark forest. You'll see a man standing near a cutable bush. After him you pass him you will see a bird Pokémon by itself (Farfetch'd). Chase it around until it reaches the man by the cutable bush. Talk to both men and they will give you Cut.
Now Cut that cutable bush to get on to the next town. A new feature in Gold/Silver is that you can just go up to the bush, press A, and it will get cut down if you have a Pokémon with Cut in your lineup. The same goes for Boulders, and some trees that will come up later.

TM 02- Headbutt

Inside the Ubame Forest Maze is a guy who will give you TM02. TM02 lets you shake the little trees that are almost everywhere in the game.
I found an you can find #190 Eipamu, that little monkey with a hand on the end of its tail. Beedrill was also found in Silver, Butterfree in Gold. You can also find level 16 Weedles, Kakunas, Caterpies, and Metapods!
When you see a big building with yellow lights shining through the windows go through it and talk the the girl behind the counter. She will tell you that her Butterfree is disobedient and won't listen to her, so she'll give you Sweet Scent for free!

Breeding Center
(Optional)
A little farther up is a house with an old man and woman inside. Talk to the man and he will take one of your male Pokémon to level it up and talk to the woman and she will do the same except with your female Pokémon. It will cost 100 bucks to take them out, and 100 bucks per every level they grow.
Then exit the building and go walk around for a little while. Come back when you see the man standing outside with your two Pokémon. Talk to him and answer yes, he will give you an Egg.
If you put in Pokémon of different # 's, for example Pidgey and Hoot-Hoot, the resulting egg will be the same species as the female Pokémon and with the attacks that the Male had. Just think of the strange combinations...
If you give them a male and female Jigglypuff, you'll get an egg with a baby Igglybuff! If you give them a male and female Clefairy, you'll get an egg with a baby Cleffa! If you give them a male and female Pikachu, you'll get an egg with a baby Pichu!
If you give them a male and female Magmar, you'll get an egg with a baby Magby! If you give them a male and female Electrabuzz, you'll get an egg with a baby Elekid! If you give them a male and female Jynx, you'll get an egg with a baby Smoochum!

Now enter the town and find the building that has only a staircase leading to a basement. It is on the bottom left side of the town. Go down the hall beating trainers. On the way, you will pass another hall. Remember that you will return later. Go up the stairs, and you will be inside another house. This house will take you outside. Again, continue to the left middle side of the town. You will find a guy that will give you a bike. In another building (the giant metal one), talk to the woman on the far right. Answer Yes, Yes, Yes, No, Yes, and No. She will give you a radio. Go to the gym and defeat the normal type gym leader. She has a Clefable and Mirutanku. It is powerful for a silly looking cow.

GOLDENROD City - Gym 3

Whitney is the Gym Leader here. You'll fight Clefairy and MilkTank. MilkTank is one "flirtatious" Pokemon. If the Pokemon you choose to battle against her is male, she'll try to "charm" him so he won't attack her. MilkTank also has a milk potion that enables her to heal herself should her HP get low. Beat Whitney and she refuses to part with her Regular Badge which allows you to use Strength. One of her team members will, however, persuade her into giving it to you and when she does, she also gives you TM 45 which is "Mellow Mellow". Out of the gym, turn right and enter a house with the flower lady. Talk to her and she'll give you some Squirtle Water which you'll need later.

Enju City

Sudowoodo- That's the plant Pokemon that you'll have to fight to clear a path. If you like, you may also catch it for your party. Apparently, Sudowoodo is rare and hard to find. Can be rather powerful too. You can only fight Sudowoodo if you use the Squirtle Water that was given to you. After you've defeated or caught Sudowoodo, go right and talk to a man who will give you TM08. This TM 08 will enable you to crack rocks. Somewhere along the way, you'll come across a "NATIONAL PARK". Depending on the day you're there, you may or may not get to take part in the Bug Catcher's Tournament. Tournament days are Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Now, you may want to revitalize your Pokemon. Go to the PokeCenter and you'll meet your rival again. No fighting. You'll both have a brief chat and then he'll leave. The house on the left of the PokeCentre has an "ITEM FINDER" for you to pick up. In the house that's above the PokeCenter is a place where there are many Kimono dancing girls, each with their own evolution of Eevee - Jolteon, Vaporeon, Flareon and the 2 new evolutions for the Gold and Silver versions - #196 ESPEON and #197 UMBREON. Fight all the girls and on your way out and pick up HM 03 - SURF from the man at the exit. At the burned out tower in the north-west part of this town, you'll meet your rival again. Beat your rival, equip your Pokemon with TM08 and you can break the rocks that are in your way. Fall down the hole in the middle of the room and you'll get to the bottom where you'll see 3 Pokemon statues come to life. The 3 Pokemon will then jump away. Note: At the bottom, there are 2 pokeballs which you won't be able to take yet. Next step is the 4th Gym.

4th Gym

MORTY is the Gym Leader here. This is one tricky gym. It's a little bit hard to get in. Use the pillars and the trainers as your markers and you'll be able to find your way into where Morty is. Once there, beat all his ghost Pokemon and get yourself the Phantom Badge. You'll also get TM 30 - Shadow Ball and get to control Pokemon with levels up to 50.

OLIVINE City

In the house next to the PokeCentre, there is a man that will give you HM04 - Strength. Go up to the top of the light house. You will see MIKAN, the Gym Leader. The pokemon next to her isn't feeling to well, so she is trying to help it. She asks for you to get some medication for it. Now head west and you'll see three boulders. Now go down and surf to CIANWOOD City.

Surf To CIANWOOD City

Next, equip yourself with SURF and swim west. CIANWOOD CITY is your next destination. There is not much to see and do here. The Gym Leader is CHUCK. In the gym, there are boulders that you must move to get to him so equip yourself with STRENGTH. TO GET TO HIM JUST MOVE THE RIGHT BOULDER UP. THEN, MOVE THE LEFT BOULDER UP. FINALLY, MOVE THE MIDDLE BOULDER TO THE RIGHT OR THE LEFT. NOW YOU'LL BE ABLE TO FACE HIM. Beat CHUCK and you'll get TM 01 - Dynamic Punch. You'll also be able to control Pokemon up to level 70. You've now earned the SHOCK BADGE. Before you leave, don't forget to talk to the lady outside the gym for HM 02 - FLY. Also go into the Phamarcy to get some medicine for the sick pokemon in the lighthouse. Now... swim back to OLIVINE CITY.

Back In Olivine City

Enter the lighthouse, which is in the lower right. Make your way to the top and give the medicine you got from cianwood to Jasmine. She'll give it to the pokemon and then return to her gym. Now go to the gym and defeat her. When you beat her you'll get TM 23 - Iron Tail. You'll also get the STEEL BADGE. Now fly east to Ecruteak. Head east from here.

Mahogany Town

You won't be able to enter the gym just yet. Head north. Don't go through the house you see or team rocket will take 1000 of you dollars. When you reach the lake you'll see a red Gyrados which you can either beat or capture. Come out of the water and go to the sign. You'll see Lance and chat with him before he takes off. You'll meet him at the shop, in town, next. Talk to him and he'll open up a trapdoor for you. This is the Team Rocket hideout. Fight at the first level... then make your way down where you'll meet Lance again. He'll heal your Pokemon. Lots to see and do and many Team Rocket to fight. Be sure to go everywhere. Check computers, bookshelves.. and pick up all the Pokeballs. Go upstairs... downstairs... explore... and open the first electronic door to the Team Rocket Boss. Defeat him, talk to the bird and get a password. Open the door to the reactor now that you have the password. Fight all the Electrodes and when you're done, you'll get HM 06 -Whirl Pool from Lance. Next stop is the gym.

Meet Pryce

This is the Ice Gym. Meet Pyrce. Beware the ice that's slippery and will try to push you away from him. Defeat Pryce and you'll get HM 16 - Icy Wind. You'll also earn an ICE BADGE.

Ice Pass

The Ice Pass is next and here, you'll save several mini-puzzles to solve. The first of which is a sliding ice-capade. Next is to push the boulders into the holes on the floor. Then go down and go up to a new town. Don't forget to get HM07 - WaterFall. You'll need it.

Blackthorn City

This is where the 8th Gym is but you won't be able to enter it just yet. Heal your Pokemon, equip yourself with HM 02 - Fly, if you haven't already. And then fly back to Goldenrod, and enter the Radio Tower. The man at the top of Radio Tower will give you a key after you beat him. With this key, you can now open the door at the underground tunnel, which was previously locked. Go through the passageway, fight team rocket, unlock the iron doors (it's a random combination), go upstairs and save the man who has been trapped. He will reward you with a KEY CARD. You come out at the shop.

Back At The Radio Tower

Now you can enter the part of Radio City Tower which was previously blocked. Keep going up till you find the male and female bosses of Team Rocket. Beat them and the town will be rid of the rest of 'em as well. Now, you're all set for the 8th and final Gym.

8th Gym - Dragon Gym

Clair is waiting for you. This isn't an easy gym, there's stairs to climb and boulders to move before you reach the gym leader. You beat Clair but you still must prove your self before she gives you your badge. To prove yourself you must go to Drangon Hole which is located behind th gym. Surf to the cave behind the gym. Equip yourself with HM-07 Whirlwind and then eliminate the little whirlpool to find the Pokeball. Pick up the Pokeball and Clair comes to present you with your final badge. From here on, you have 2 choices. Either go back to New Bark Town for the Pokemon League; While you're there, don't forget to take your MasterBall from Prof. Elm. Or go to Ecruteak City where the Legendary Bird Ho-oH is if your playing gold version, or if your playing Pokemon Silver, Legendary Bird Lugia in the set of caves to the west of CIANWOOD City. You only have one chance to catch either so be careful and if you like, save before the battle.

After you defeat the elite four the credits will roll, THE GAME IS NOT OVER. Go back to your hometown and see prof. Elm; he'll give you a ticket to the S.S. Anne
