A Summary of Celtics History
Glasgow Celtic Football Club was established in the late nineteenth century by a Marist Brother known as Brother Walfrid Kerins principally as a means of using the game of football to raise money to provide food for the Irish Immigrant poor in the East End of Glasgow.Celtics first game was played on the 28th of May 1888 against Rangers, with Celtic winning 5-2.In their first season,Celtic won it's first trophy - the North Eastern Football Association Cup.In 1892 Celtic Football Club moved to its current ground,Celtic Park, situated in Parkhead,Glasgow, which became known as 'Paradise' to its supporters due to its proximity to the local cemetry.

Over the next 50 years,Celtic won numerous cup victories and league titles in Scotland. In 1937 they were victorious in the Scottish cup in front of 147,000 spectators and,in the following year, marked their Golden Jubilee by winning the League Championship as well as the Empire Exhibition Trophy.

Celtic had some success in the 1950's including victory in the Coronation cup in 1953 beating Hibs 2-0 in the Final. It was in the period 1965 to 1974,however,under the management of a former player Jock Stein, that Celtic acheived the reputation of being one of the Premier European clubs. In that period, fielding some of Britains best known players of their time includcing Mc Neill,Dalglish,Johnstone and Mc Grain,Celtic won the League Championship for nine successive seasons and more notably, the European Cup in 1967.Celtic were finalists in the European Cup again in 1970 losing to Feyenoord, having beaten Leeds United in the semi-finals at Hampden Park in front of 133,000 spectators,a European Cup attendance record.

Sucess continued into the 1980's with four League Championshp wins, four Scottish Cup wins and a League Cup victory.Celtic won the League and Scottish Cup double in its centenary year of 1988 and the Scottish Cup again in 1989.In the early 1990's there was, however,a marked change in Celtics fortunes.By 1993,it was clear that Celtic was losing support as a result of a board of Directors that seemed not to care about the club. After internal disputes, shareholder and supporter unrest and with Celtic facing financial ruin, the Directors agreed on March 4th 1994 to Fergus Mc Cann joining the board and providing immediate cash guarantee to stabilize the Company. On 11th of march,Chris White,Michael Kelly and David Smith, members of celtics existing board, resigned.By June,Fergus Mc Cann and a group of investors took control of Celtic.By mid-September the remainder of the clubs old board had also departed.

Tommy Burns was appointed Manager in July 1994.He immediately strengthened his management teamwith the appointment of Billy Stark as Assistant Manager.Burnscapped his first season in charge with a Tennants scottish cup final victory over Airdrie.Celtic won 1-0 winning their first trophy for six seasons.

The famous old Parkhead stadium was demolished in favour of an all seater stadium to conform with new legislation. In place of "The Jungle" an amazing new North Stand was built seating 27,640 fans. The redevelopment of the east Stand and the smaller South East stand brought capacity up to 47,602.In August 1998 Celtic park re-opened with a capacity of 60,000 making it the largest club stadium in Britain at that time.Even now only Old Trafford is bigger.

With this fine stadium the club had the urge for success and Wim Jansen was appointed Manager for the 1997-98 season.Wim did much better than many doubters thought he would. He was given the job of stopping Rangers going 10 league titles in a row, eclipsing Celtics record of 9.Wim surprised many and Celtic kept pace with Rangers all season and also progressed in the League cup.Wim made himself a Celtic legend by winning one of the clubs most important league championships, the first in 10 years. He led Celtic to the league cup also.Finnaly Celtic had a Manager who could bring success to this great club.He then shocked Celtic fans by leaving the club and this was nearly to much to take for many.

The 1998-99 season was no more than respectable Celtic won no silverware.Joseph Venglos the slovakian manager was not at fault he did extremely well under the circumstances at the club. The 1999-00 was supposed to mark a brand new brighter future for the club with the dream team Dalglish and Barnes at the helm.People couldnt be farther from the truth it was a disaster barnes was clearly to inexperianced for management at such a level. He made silly buys and didnt motivate players Celtic had a dreadful season. To add salt to Celtics wounds Rangers won the treble and fans demanded more from their club.

The 2000-01 season saw the appointment of lifelong Celtic fan Martin O Neill as manager. From the start O Neill meant business with some great performances from his team.Celtic players were showing passion and pride something lacking in previous seasons.O Neill made himself a Celtic lagend when in his first old firm game in charge Celtic trounced Rangers 6-2.It didnt end there celtic beat rangers 4 times that season on their way to winning the treble.O Neill was a hero no-one expected him to do so well after last seasons upheaval.O Neill is still in charge for this season 2001-02 and it promises to be every bit as exciting.

This im sure youll agree is a glourious club with a fantastic history and i hope you understand that was only a summary. An entire history would be absoltly enthraling but I havent got the room for it.I apologise but i hope you enjoyed my summary of this clubs triumphs.Im sure there are many more to come so HAIL HAIL
