18 million pets (dogs, cats, puppies and kittens), are euthanized (killed) in shelters every year. Millions more are abandoned in rural and urban areas, killed by getting hit by cars, and die from animal abuse.

You can help! Be a responsible pet owner! Spay and neuter your pets. Spaying and neutering drastically reduces the risks of various medical problems, reduces aggressive behavior, reduces the desire to "roam" which prevents the dog from getting hit my cars, and makes for happier personalities, and most importantly, spaying and neutering helps alleviate the overpopulation problem. Ask your vet for more health benefits. (800)SPAYUSA can refer you to vets in your area with low cost rates.

PLEASE do NOT support pet stores. Most pet stores who sell animals for profit, get them from puppy mills which are illegal sites of abuse, animals are transported to pet stores in cages that have no floor to support their feet, stores discard the injured and deformed pets since that are less easy to sell, and put the store animals on some type of tranquilizer / drug to keep the display animals from jumping around and barking too much in front of customers (notice in the pet stores how they are always sleeping?), and the store feeds them cheap "food" to hold them over until they’re sold. You can help by not buying from them and writing to the mall who leases the store space, telling them you will not shop there.

PLEASE do NOT support breeding. If you want a purebred, as many as 25% of dogs entering shelters each year are purebreds, please adopt one there or at one of the numerous Rescue Purebred Organizations. If you breed your pet and it has one litter, even if you find "good" homes for most of the pups and kittens, in one year, all the pups or kittens could have litters of their own. One female cat and her offspring can produce 420,000 cats in seven years (75% of all cats entering shelters are killed). One female dog and her offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years (61% of all dogs entering shelters are killed). You do the numbers, there is no way we can find homes for them all.

Even if you are not a pet owner, this still effects you ~ Millions of tax dollars are spent annually to care for lost, unwanted and abandoned pets...and millions more to destroy those that do not find homes. Please help educate pet owners to prevent litters and adopt from shelters. If you can’t have a pet in your home, but love to be with them, volunteer to play with some at your local shelter. Most shelters give only 3 days before an unadopted pet is put to sleep, you’d fulfill some last wishes.

You can write to congress officials www.uscongress.gov to encourage teaching "Kindness to Animals" in schools (studies show that juvenile and adult criminals have histories of animal cruelty, let’s start early and teach animal kindness in school and alleviate future crimes against humans).

PLEASE email CauseforPaws@hotmail.com for a copy of this info. (and more if requested) to pass on to others.
The more we help, the less they hurt.
