Gabbing with a Falkenburger
Although Nocturne's chapters can be played in any order, the best argument for playing them in the order they are listed is that they seem to get exponentially more demanding. Act One has relatively short levels, no taxing puzzles, and doesn't demand complete mastery of the controls. It is a good place to build the skills that will be critical later without constantly having to reload saved games.
Act 1Dark Reign of the Vampire King
For the first half of this volume, Spookhouse colleague and half-vampire Svetlana Lupescu accompanies the Stranger. Take advantage of her melee prowess to learn how to fire that pistol while she keeps the monsters off, but don't take Svetlana for granted or let her fight alone. She is vulnerable and if you don't contribute anything to the fight she will go down (and if your partner dies, it's game over).
Svetlana shows her stuff
Finding the exit from Falkenburg is easyjust pull the lever next to the town gate to open it. Svetlana won't let you leave town until you talk to some of the townspeople, however, so you need to kill all of the monsters in town to convince them that it is safe to emerge from behind their locked doors. Once they do emerge, you'll find most of the Falkenburgers aren't too chatty, but if you go to the cathedral the mayor will provide lots of information. After you've talked to the mayor, there is another man in the cathedral that will give information that will permit you to meet Yuri in the next scene.
Trial and error bridge
Next stopthe werewolf-infested forest. The werewolves tend to attack in packs, and it is inevitable that Svetlana and the Stranger will take some damage, so the sooner you can get out of the forest, the better. Occasionally, a keen eye or auto-aim will alert you to a werewolf lurking at the edge of the forest, and using your silver bullets you can pick it off before it gets to you. The forest looks like a maze at first, but really there are only three main paths. One takes you to the sawmill, where (if you talked to the right person in town) Yuri will give you lots of weaponry and equipment. One leads you to your ultimate objective, Castle Gaustadt. Finally, one leads to a dead end filled with werewolves coming and going. When you find the suspended bridge leading to the castle, you'll need to guide Svetlana down the path to the left so she can jump the gorge. Then you'll have to go back and take your chances with the bridge; you'll probably have to reload more than once before you finally succeed, but try to stick to the lighter-colored boards.
Reading is fundamental
At Castle Gaustadt, you will be on you own, and you need to accomplish two things. To find Count Voicu, you need to open the grate over the stairs leading to the dungeons where he is sleeping. To do this, you will need to go the chapel outside the main castle building on the far right and move the statue to rest on top of the cross. The holy relic thus revealed is crucial to dispatching Voicu, and when you pick it up the grate will be raised. Next you need to go to the library. First go to the bell-tower and get the book, then from the entry hall of the castle, take the stairs to the second floor, go outside, and walk along the roof until you find a place from which you can jump into the library. Place the book on the pedestal and the location of the dungeon key will be revealed.
When you eventually find and fight Voicu, dodge his attacks and use conventional weapons to deplete his health and force him into human form. Finish him off with the holy relic.
A very moving piece of sculpture
Before the act concludes, some of his widows may want to have a chat with you. By this point, you may reach the painful conclusion that there were more vampires and vampire brides than vampire bullets. But while your pistols are easiest to use, there are two weapons that are more effective. First, don't forget about the Sun of God that Holliday gave you before you left Spookhouseyou did go and chat with her, right? Second, the blessed crossbow bolts and wooden stakes seem to have little effect as you repeatedly pump them into a vampire bride's stomach. Try leaning back a little to raise your aim and go for the heart shot. Gabbing with a Falkenburger
