Part I
Level 1 Willow Creek
Keep your Dwarf alive if you want any hope of ridding Willow Creek of the Ghastly force.
The first sign of Soulblighter's return appears in the small village of Willow Creek. Villagers there have sent out word that dozens of undead Ghasts have attacked the peaceful community and it's up to your band of Warriors, Bowmen and a single Dwarf to put a stop to the chaos.
TIP: Don't clump up your Bowmen when firing on enemy units. Keep them in a line formation, either long or loose line, so they won't hit each other with arrows.
Though Ghasts are incredibly weak (about three archer hits will take them down), they can pack a serious punch when attacking in groups. If a Ghast manages to hit one of your units, chances are that unit will be frozen for a few moments by the Ghast's undead touch. Therefore, don't use the Warriors your only hand-to-hand unit for this level to attack. Instead, use the Dwarf to grenade large clumps of Ghasts while the Bowmen attack from a distance. Move through the town slowly you don't want to trigger too many Ghasts at once and become surrounded. Let the undead force come to you. Once the town is clear, you'll continue on to the next level.
Level 2 Salvation
Several peasants have been kidnapped and are being held captive in a nearby cemetery. Follow the road and be on the look out for any Ghasts; they'll be hard to see in the fog, so use your overhead map to spot them from a distance.
After you bust the cage's wooden bars, flee immediately. The alarm will be sounded soon!
Continue following the road until you reach a large arch. Underneath you'll spot two Brigands talking with one another and otherwise ignoring their primary guard duties. Use the Dwarves to attack them by surprise. Continue through the arch until you spot the caged peasants on the right. Every so often, a Brigand guard will come and check to make sure the peasants are still confined. Wait until this guard is walking off and attack the cage's wooden bars with your Bowmen or Warriors.
As soon as the peasants have been released, turn around and head back the way you came, eventually making a left at the road fork. When the Brigand notices the peasants have escaped, he'll sound the alarm and an entire legion will be on your tail. Slow down the pursuers with your Dwarves and Bowmen until you reach your reinforcements.
Level 3 Down a Broken Path
Rurik needs your help in reaching the town of Tallow. This escort mission can be rather tricky because Rurik has a mind of his own. You can't control Rurik yourself, but have to hope that he'll fall back when enemy units approach. When the level begins, move forward to the intersection and trigger a host of oncoming Ghols. Use your Bowmen and Warriors to take them out; keep your Bowmen up on the hill for a height advantage. Once Rurik retreats behind your force, move in front of him to put yourself between him and the oncoming enemy.
Beware of Thrall coming out of the river when you lead the fragile Rurik across.
TIP: When attacking with a Dwarf, it could be more advantageous to use "control-ground-click". Try to anticipate the enemy's movement and control-click where you think the enemy will be when the cocktail reaches the ground.
When the Thrall arrive, take them out with ease with your Bowmen and Dwarves. Once the area is secure, return to the road and make your way to the river crossing. Thrall will appear from either side of the water when you cross; be prepared with your Warriors and attack quickly. Turn left and head toward the Tallow gate. As you approach, Ghols, Thrall and even some Soulless will attack from the rear. Keep Rurik moving forward by escorting him with a couple of Warriors. Use the remaining Warriors to confront the Ghols. Use fire arrows on the Soulless and Dwarves on the Thrall. Pay attention to Rurik, though; at the town gates are a small band of Thrall. Use Warriors and Dwarves to remove the remaining undead.
Level 4 Into the Breach
Look out for enemy fire arrows before you begin the siege on the Baron's castle.
The first significant challenge comes from an assault on the Baron's stronghold. Move your units north and follow the road into the small village. A few Ghol and Thrall patrols will spot you and attempt to take out your units from various directions. Pay attention to the overhead map and kill the Ghols with Bowmen and Warriors. Once inside the town gates, a group of Dark Archers and Thrall will impede your progress. Use your Bowmen and fire arrows to take out the Archers and leave the Thrall to your eager Dwarves.
After the Brigands have raised the drawbridge, a new unit will be available on the far side of the map: Jari, the Dwarven Pathfinder (you'll also receive a host of Warrior reinforcements). Jari's invisible to enemy units, unless you attack them. Therefore, don't attack anyone! Follow the path until you reach the stronghold's side door. Wait for the right moment and sneak inside right beside an enemy Brigand. Move the Pathfinder to the stronghold's upper walls by using the ramps. Find the drawbridge winch (it's on the far side of the ledge) and destroy it with a flaming cocktail. The Dark Archers stationed here will spot Jari and begin firing. Kill as many as you can with cocktails before you're killed.
Here's the drawbridge winch. Lead your pathfinder Dwarf up here and blow up the device!
The drawbridge will lower and a legion of Brigands will emerge. Use your band of Dwarves to knock them around a bit, then move in with Warriors. Quickly move inside and hug the southern walls so the high Dark Archers can't hit you. Move some Warriors up the ramps and get rid of the pesky Archers. Use Bowmen and Dwarves to take out any enemy Brigand patrols inside the stronghold. Move to the main door, which will open and a few Stygian Knights will appear. Use the Dwarves to take them out quickly, then move inside the main door.
Level 5 The Baron
Finding the Baron isn't the hard part it's making sure he doesn't escape!
Time to locate the Baron and complete your assassination mission. Finding the Baron isn't enough, however; you also must prevent him from escaping. Post a few Warrior guards at the entrance you've just come through and turn left. You'll first see some patrols moving up and down the corridors. Once they're at the choke point, use your Dwarf and Bowmen to make quick work of them. Continue moving until you reach the edge of the fortress; a few guards are posted here. Use your Dwarves and Bowmen to weaken them, then finish them off with your Warriors. Move your force to the opposite side of this hall and remove the similar force station there.
TIP: If a Bowmen dies, and he hasn't used his fire arrow, you can pick it up with another Bowmen.
Post Warrior guards by the fortress exits.
Keep moving through the fortress. The Baron is almost constantly on the move, so you never know precisely where you'll first spot him. Near the far east and west sides, you'll see two exits. You must post a few Warrior guards at each. Leaving the exits unguarded could allow the to Baron escape.
Once you spot the Baron, send half your force around to corner him. The goal is to trap him in one room, then slowly corner him with your forces. Dwarf cocktails work best on the Baron's personal bodyguards, the Stygian Knights. Don't waste your time with Bowmen, though; the Stygian Knight armor is impervious to arrows.
Level 6 Gonen's Bridge
Keep your Warrior Captain alive in Gonen's Bridge if he dies, the mission is a failure!
With Soulblighter's mighty army approaching, you must flee with your legion and reach Gonen's Bridge. Once across, you must destroy the bridge, halting the advancement of the enemy forces. The trick during this mission is that Garrick, your Warrior Captain, must survive in order to complete the mission. From your initial starting point, quickly head down to the bottom of the hill. A horde of Thrall and Soulless will soon be coming up that hill so you need to get away as soon as possible.
Two possible directions emerge at the bottom of the hill either south or heading west and then turning north. Head straight south, across the river. Wights will begin appearing from every corner of the map. Keep your Bowmen on alert and don't let the Wights get too close. Keep heading south until you reach the base of a hill entrance. Follow the path, which will curve up and north and then back around. At the top of the hill is a small force of Thrall, Ghols and Soulless.
Once your forces are over Gonen's Bridge, blow up the satchels with a well-placed Dwarf cocktail.
Use your Bowmen's fire arrows to barbecue the Soulless and fight the Ghols with your Warriors. The Ghols could be equipped with explosive pus-packets; approach them first with your Journeyman, who isn't damaged as much by the purple fluid. Use the Dwarves to quickly take care of all the defending Thrall. Be sure to utilize your Journeyman provided for this mission and heal any near dead soldier. At the top of the hill, continue following the path until you reach another river crossing, again filled with Thrall and Wights. Make your way past the final guards, additional Ghols and Soulless, and you will reach the bridge. Make sure the Warrior Captain (and everyone else) has crossed, then use a Dwarf to launch a cocktail at the satchel charged-bridge. |
