Engine power can be transmitted to the wheels in three different manners- front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, and all wheel drive. Wheels that recieve power (also called the drive wheels) are what move the car in directions of forward and reverse. Most automobiles are either front or rear wheel drive.
The differential is a gear combination that allows each powered wheel to move at a slightly different speed than the other when the vehicle is turning. The driveshaft is what connects teh transmission's output shaft to a differential gear in the axle. Universal joints at both ends of the driveshaft allow it to rotate as the axles move up and down. |
