The island of St. Kitts and its smaller neighbor island, Nevis, are located at the juncture of the Windward and Leeward Islands about 65 miles from Antigua. St. Kitts (formerly St. Christopher) is 23 miles in length and ranges in width from five miles in the northwest to a very narrow peninsula with extensive beaches in the southeast. Nevis is a circular island (map) providing the exclamation point in the southeast. The distance between the islands is just two miles.
Basseterre is a very small port and capital of the islands and is easy to negotiate on foot.
