TO PRINT YOU MUST USE 'LANDSCAPE.' TEXT IS TOO WIDE FOR 'PORTRAIT.'

uuu John "Earmark John"
Paraphrasing a card in CC Gardner Card File at NJ Gen. Soc.: John #1, s/o Moses, registered
his earmark in Morris Twp 10Jan1744/45. He had dau, Martha, who m Jedediah Tompkins; he had
son, John Jr. #2, who m Grace & Bap. children at Hanover 1769-1780. Registering an earmark
indicates ownership of livestock, grazing land & barn, & [possibly home & family.

No documentation that he was f/o John #2 or of Martha, or that Martha & John #2 were siblings.
Likely he was “earmark John” who was involved in the Newark Land Riots 1740-50s; possibly
data exists in Essex Co. Court Records. Henry Pilch, renowned Morris Co. historian, told me
"Land Riot John" was probably "earmark John", & lived in the Rockaway River area (Zenas, s/o
John & Grace, later lived there.) Likely this John was sued with Daniel by David Ogden 1775.

John & John
There were 2 Johns in Morris County who served during the Rev. One man could not be in 2
militia units simultaneously. It is unlikely these records r/t "earmark John," then age
50s-60s. One John was a Pvt in Benjamin Carter’s Co., Eastern Bat., Morris Co. Militia
5/7/1778. The other John was Pvt in Capt. Obadiah Kitchell’s Co., Eastern Bat., Morris
Co. Militia 5/7/1778.

2 "single man" Johns appeared for the 1st time on 1780 Morris Co. tax rateables (in addition
to John who m Grace.) John of Morris Twp.- 1780 single man; no single designation 1781;
no John listed 1782 & 3; with house & 3 white inhabitants 1784 (suggests spouse & child;
& in 1785 & 1786; then gone. John of Hanover Twp.- 1780 & 81 single man as John Jr.; no lists
exist 1782 & 83; then gone.

Likely 1 of these was in Morris Co. Court 1781 & Edmund posted security (Court of Common Pleas,
vol. 7:126.) Edmund was in Morris Twp.; suspect the single John of Morris Twp was bro/o
Edmund, s/o Silas & subject of lawsuit.

2 Johns on Hanover 1776 Militia Census of men 18-65. One was John who m Grace. The other
likely the "single" John of later Hanover tax records & likely one of the militia Johns.

uuua (?)Martha
Martha m Jedediah Tompkins 26Jan1757 at Morristown. No further info

uuub (?)John #2
John #2 b abt 1740/48 based on birthdates of his children 1769-1792. He lived in the NE corner
of Hanover Twp., today called Pine Brook (old name- Horse Neck or Rockaway Neck.) Per Pilch,
John owned large tracts of land on the Essex side of the Passaic River, & was a victim of
the land riots during the troubles over title to property E of the River” 1740s/50s. The
land of "earmark/land riot John" & that of “John who m Grace” are in the same area.

See above for possible Rev. service.
He is on tax rateables in Hanover, the "married" John.”
He was on the Hanover militia census of 1776 of men 18-65.
John & Grace were members of Hanover Church 1769-1780; church affiliation thereafter unknown;
Bap records for 4 of their children (youngest?) haven't been found. In 1794 Grace "of
Horse Neck" was a member of Caldwell Church. They lived on the Morris side of the River, but
closer to the church in Caldwell.
John & Grace had children:
uuuba Esther, Bap at Hanover 18Jun1769; not in father's estate; likely d young.
uuubb Unknown son, Bap at Hanover 11Aug1771; not in father’s estate, likely d young.
uuubh Zenas, Bap at Hanover 11May1777 (see following.)
uuubg Stephen Bap at Hanover 23Jan1780. (see following.)
uuubc Mary or Polly (see following.)
uuubd Martha (see following)
uuube Susan (see following)
uuubf John Jr. (see following)

John (2) d 1799; Zenas, oldest surviving son, administered his estate (Morris Adm. I:49.)
Inventory done by Barnabas Winds & Lot Dixon. Tax rateables show Grace living
with Zenas through 1803; thereafter suspect she remarried.

In Sept 1806 youngest son, John Jr., then over 14, petitioned to have Henry Wells Wade made
his guardian. An inventory of his share of his father's estate (8 acres)was done by William
Wines & Allen Heyward. Deeds to settle the estate, L:168 & M525, say the property had been
“given by deed” to John & Grace from Leonard & Rhoda Winds. This suggests that Grace may
be d/o Leonard Winds/Wines; the involvement of Barnabas Winds & William Wines in her husband's
estate suggests that they were her brothers. Had Grace m Henry Wells Wade abt 1804, this
would explain why John Jr. chose him for his guardian, rather than brother, Zenas.

uuubc Mary, 11Mar1786-3Mar1843, m at Hanover 15Jun1804 William Fox, 2Oct1784-6Jan1866;
moved to Seneca Falls, NY; had children: Samuel, Nancy, Phebe, Mary, Harriet, Electa,
William & Sarah. (NJ Gen. Soc. Mag. Vol. 9:78; Genung Genealogy.)

uuubd Martha, m at Hanover 29May1803 Aaron Baldwin (NJ Gen. Soc. Mag. Vol. 9:77.) She &
sister, Susan, m brothers (#60 JRB Collection.) Had: Marshall, Edward & Adeline.

uuube Susan of Rockaway or Parsippany m 14Jan1798 Nathan or Nathaniel Baldwin. (NJ Gen.
Soc. Mag. Vol. 36; C.C. Gardner card files; Sentinel of Freedom.) She & sister, Martha, m
brothers. Had children: Lucas, John & Phebe.

uuubf John Jr., a minor in 1799 & over 14 in 1806 when he chose Wade as his guardian; he is
1st on tax rateables 1813, hence b abt 1792; this birthdate is consistent with a minor 14
or older in 1806. No further info.

uuubg Stephen m at Caldwell 26Nov1803 Naomi Wheaton. Still in Hanover Twp. with several
children per 1830 census, then removed to Lucas Co., OH.

uuubh Zenas, Bap 11May1777-1845, m 7Apr1802 Betsey, d/o Ezekiel Baldwin (Sentinel of Freedom
newspaper.) Both buried at Parsippany. Zenas m 2nd Ann. The administrator of his estate
in 1845 was William Hennion, likely Ann's brother. (Morris deeds NN:510 and OO:45 show wife
Betsy; deed CCCC:402 shows Zenas & wife Ann.)
Zenas and Betsy had:
-Sybel, m 4Apr1824 John B. Ward of Rockaway Neck (NJGM v 36)
-George, moved to Mansfield, Sussex Co. per Gardner.
-Ezekiel, apparently unm; estate named siblings, nieces & nephews.)
-Ashbel, m Hannah d/o Thomas & Jemima Talmadge; had per Crayon's "Rockaway Records":
John Orville, Rachel Elizabeth, Sarah Caroline, Sarah Jemima, Hannah Caroline, Emma Jemima who
m Jacob H. Vreeland. Per Gardner Ashbel was b 24Mar1805; his estate adm. was 22Apr1873. In
Talmadge Plot, Parsippany cemetery with no dates: Elizabeth, Hannah, Ashbel and Ezekiel.

vvva Nathan (remains a fallen branch)
I have tried to connect him to the descendants of Thomas; this can't be done with available
data. Morristown Pres. Ch. Combined Register says he m Jemima Wood, d/o Elnathan Wood ,
& Miss Topping of Bridgehampton, LI. Nothing suggests that Elnathan moved to Morristown;
his son, Clement, did. His daughter, Jemima, settled in Roxbury Twp. with Nathan. They
likely m in the Hamptons ca 1770. Nathan likely descends from Lot (i); this is the only
line that remained in the Hamptons. (Nathaniel Burnet purchased grass in Southampton in the
1750s, perhaps Nathan's father.) Nathan is 1st taxed 1776 in Roxbury & seems to have lived
a quiet life without known legal problems. He settled in an area of Morris Co. where deeds
were not problems, very sparsely settled & many miles from churches; records are scarce.
Deeds at his death show his land near the present Methodist Church, Flanders, Morris Co.
I believe Nathan & Jemima are buried at that church.) Nathan abt 1745-9Sep1822;
Jemima abt 1748-9May1824.
Nathan & Jemima (Wood) Burnet had:
vvvaa Mary -see following
vvvab James –see following
vvvac William –see following
vvvad Nathan –see following

vvvaa Mary- only known d/o Nathan & named in his will. Her m to Benjamin Heaton Jan1805 is
from Morris Co. Marriage Books. "Pearce-Lincoln Family Tree (internet) says: she was b
28Nov1781 Newark, NJ, d 1839 Lewiston, NY; Benjamin Heaton b 1Nov1781 Newark. Had children:
Samuel, Andrew Alexander, Jemima, William, Martha, Susan, Mary Ann, & Benjamin F. (Nathan
lived in Roxbury when Mary was born; Benjamin's birthplace is uncertain, but Heaton
families lived in Roxbury and Mendham.)

vvvab James- eldest s/o Nathan & named in his will. He was b ca 1775 & 1st taxed 1796.
May have followed brother & sister to Niagara Co., NY.

vvvac William- likely 2nd s/o Nathan, was b ca 1781 & 1st taxed 1802. Chamber's
"Settlers of German Valley” states that he m Dolly Souvern. He moved early 1800s to
Niagara County, NY. William served in the War of 1812 & received a pension for service
on Lake Erie. (Born the same year as William, s/o Enos of Trumbull Co, OH, the pension
records are easily confused.) In his father's will as being "of Niagry Co., NY."

vvvad Nathan Jr.- likely the youngest s/o Nathan, & named in his will, was b ca 1789 &
1st appears on tax records 1811. He d Aug 1867. Chamber's “Settlers of German Valley”
says he m Clarissa Souvern, 11Aug1800-3Nov1863. Only child, Marietta, m George Larason
or Larrison. (Deed ------------------; also Internet ……………………….

www Jonathan is unknown
He 25Oct1742-6May1826 m Mehitable Dickinson b 28Oct1747. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and
served from MA. Resided S. Hadley or Granby, Hampshire Co., MA.

Current family historians believe he was s/o an unknown Stephen and grs/o of an unknown
David of Southampton or Easthampton. This is based on a biographical sketch of Martin Waite
Burnett, grs/o Jonathan. All known Davids & Stephens of the Hamptons are accounted for.
When queried, these historians said that David may have been a new immigrant to Easthampton &
not part of this family. There are no records to support this.

Another grandson of Jonathan, Samuel Smith, s/o Samuel and Mehitable (Burnett) Smith,
visited the Hamptons in 1850s. He told David (igbeab) that his "father m a Burnett of Flying
Point." Mehitable wasn't b at Flying Point, Southampton; her parents were in So. Hadley,
MA at the time of her birth. But his grf, Jonathan, may well have been b at Flying Point, else
Samuel Smith would not have been seeking his family history in that very specific place,
only a local place name for a section of Southampton. Jonathan may descend from Lot (i),
perhaps one of the unknown s/o Joseph (igb.) The "Flying Point" land belonged to Lot (i),
s/o Thomas, in 1702, passed to son, Joseph -ig, then to Joseph Jr. -igb.

Jonathan and Mehitable (Dickinson) Burnett had children:

*Maria Burnet, b 22Feb1805 in Morrestown, Rosburty Co., NJ, m James Price. Suspect she
is d/o James or William of Niagara Co., NY, grd/o Nathan of Morris Co. Believe Bible should
read that Maria was b in Roxbury, Morris Co. James & William Burnet were only adults living
in Roxbury at time of her birth. From Price Bible per DAR Magazine of 12/1967:
Maria b 22Feb1805 m Ossean, Allegany Co., NY by Henry Armstrong Esq 4Jan1822 James Price,
b 9Aug1800 Smithfield, Warren Co., PA. Had: Emmarilla b Sparta, Livingston Co, NY;
Nancy Ann b Ossean, Allegany, NY; Esther, Amber (male) & James Wilkinson b Limestone,
Warren, PA; Maria Louisa, Betsy Ann & Martha Sidell b Deerfield, Warren, PA

*Moses & Betsy Burnett. May represent 2 Moses Burnets, however, when 1 disappears from 1 place,
he (or the other) immediately appears elsewhere. Moses (kchc), s/o Justus, was Bap Hanover,
NJ 21Jan1753; returned to Brookhaven with father ca 1760. Alone on tax records Brookhaven
1773 & assessed 1774, then gone. In Gloucester Co., NJ (near uncle William) during Rev.;
served in militia. Taxed in Gloucester Co 1785-90 as single-man & 1792 with no marital
status given, suggesting 1791 marriage, then gone. Per the 1793 Militia Census Moses
lived in Essex Co. near Henry & Phebe (Burnet) Rogers. On tax ratables Morris Twp, Morris
Co. 1793-1803. His 1st wife apparently died. He m 10Mar1798 Elizabeth Bonnel (Scotch Plains
Baptist Church records, he of Morris, she of Westfield; also records of Salem Church of the
Evangelical Assn., Lancaster, PA per IGI film #1903726.) He vanished from tax records 1804.
They divorced 1808; the decree doesn't give reason. Later Aaron Bonnel Burnet sold what
appears to be the land owned by Moses in 1802; Aaron was in Hardwick, Sussex, & later in
Easton, PA. Moses had land interaction with Cooper, Marsh & Smith. In 1803 Moses & Betsy
sold Long Hill land, “by inheritance,” to Elijah Smith (K:23.) In 1822 Aaron of Hardwick,
Sussex bought this land back from Elijah Smith, with a promise that he wouldn't call on
Smith re: dower of Mary, w/o Isaac Bedell.

*Stephen of Westfield (Likely not part of this family) Tax ratables 1789-90 owned a tanyard
& 20 acres. Rahway-Plainfield Monthly Meeting- certificate 11/19/1795 to Stephen, Anabel, &
sons Robert & Daniel; Thomas given certificate same date. To Redstone Monthly Meeting, Fayette
Co., PA., then moved to area between Dayton & Waynesville, OH. Moores is also likely son.
Annabel, w/o Stephen was nee Moores. Stephen is likely bro/o Henry who m Abigail Little &
Sarah Hallet and resided in Jamaica, LI. They may be the Stephen & Henry who were fined for
"dereliction of duty" in the Essex Militia during the Rev.; this may have been due to religion.

William 1793- Not this family; per obit, a native of Scotland; buried Succasunna, NJ.

*Abigail Burnet m Uzal Ball 3/20/1748-4/9/1799 (Ball Genealogy) Chambers "Settlers of German
Valley" says she was an orphan.

*Abigail Burnet m Enoch Ball, son of Uzal (Littell:34)

*Hannah Burnet m 12Aug1795 Joseph Bond at Morristown (NJ Gen. Soc. Mag. 4:30)

*Hannah Burnet m John Benjamin 21Oct1761 (Hanover Church Records)

*Phebe Burnet m Henry Rogers (see Moses above)
*_?_ Burnet m Patience Wheeler, d/o Joseph of Essex; she was b 6/7/1679 (Wheeler Genealogy.)

*Joseph Burnet- Essex Court 1749. (Likely land investment of Joseph of Southampton.)

*Thomas Burnet- court records, Newark, in 1740 & 1746. (Maybe s/o Andrew of Monmouth/Middlesex)

*William B. Burnet advertised runaway Irish servant 1771. No William Burnet is known to
have a middle initial of B. There was a William B. Barnet in Essex Co.

*Winans Burnett, overseer of roads in Mendham 1791 (suspect this was misread/miswritten; there
is a Winans Bennet in 1793 in the New Brunswick/Perth Amboy area)
