First, on behalf of myself and our other members, we welcome you to our scattered group of regular, rational Texans concerned with the increasing intrusion of the exclusionary religious atmosphere so pervasive in today's society in general, and government, in particular.
Most of us feel, in the most advanced and, supposed, open society in the world, one's own religious belief should be a non-issue. We'd be happy if everyone were just left alone to sort out their own spiritual paths without the dubious 'help' of organized religion. If one choses to believe in 100 gods or none, it should be his/her business only. Instead, we have many intolerant Religionists, now in unconstitutional collusion with the government, constantly pressing their close-minded agendas. Woe and be damned to anyone of us capable of independent thought that disagrees with their singular viewpoint.
WE MUST KEEP THE GOVERNMENT OUT OF RELIGION, Encourage Each Individual to Seek His OWN Spirituality, Then Respect Their Choices otherwise we risk:
(1) the continuation of 2000+ years of sectarian conflict
(2) a continued belief that supernatural intervention will save us instead of hard and thoughtful work of people
(3) the indoctrination of our children and their children into the quagmire of religious beliefs, myth and superstition
(4) the continued 'dumbing down' of our educational system, pandering religious 'correctness' over honest scientific inquiry
(5) more and more of our tax money spent subsidizing already rich and tax-free churches for more of their proselytizing, political action and church building
(6) and dozens of more reasons you already know.
What can we, a loose group of individuals scattered across the great State of Texas do?. Quite a lot actually:
1.- EDUCATE YOURSELF on what's happening today in Texas. I strongly urge you to subscribe to the FREE once a day email notifications from Texas Freedom Network (http://www.tfn.org)which basically is a 'clipping service', scanning Texas newspapers for issues of Church/State and Texas education, providing a single sentence synopsis of the article and a direct link to it. I guarantee once you see what's really happening around Texas, your 'blood will boil'.
2.- READ - Our main 'Welcome' Page lists several Sources
3. MOST IMPORTANTLY, SPEAK OUT. I realize that it's safer to just let people carry on their religious gibberish and actions, but are we not, by our silence ascribing to their agenda? Is that being honest with our own convictions?.
We can help you in 'speaking out'. If you see something in your own community that you feel is offensive or violates Church/State - write or email the responsible party and send us an email copy. We will then send your letter to all our members and leaders of other Texas Groups encouraging them to write their own letters to the 'offender' supporting your position. Multiple letters including one from the Texas Secular Society itself can be quite effective. In particularly offensive situations we will ask for, and usually receive, help from National Headquarters of FFRF and AU. And don't forget those Letters to the Editor of your local newspapers.
Look, I know how tough it is to take an unpopular position no matter how true, particularly on religion here in Texas, but by being non-confrontational it can be done without 'ruffling too many feathers'. Simply stress that NO SPECIFIC RELIGION HAS A CLAIM ON "MORALITY", NONE IS 'RIGHT' OR 'WRONG' and insist ALL Spiritual beliefs or non-beliefs should be respected, that one's own individual spirituality is a Personal matter and, most of all, ONE'S LIVING ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN SERMONS and PRAYERS.
I've said more than enough for now. Again, Welcome, Thanks for looking us over and, as usual, we always enjoy hearing from you so please send me your suggestions, questions, comments, jokes, anecdotes and criticisms or if you just want to vent some secular frustration on symphatic ears.
