Popzineonline Interview with Nick and Aaron
Date: September 6, 2001
Source: Popzineonline
Submitted by: Wendy

Question: Where did the idea to do a duet together come from?

Aaron Carter: Well, we’re on the same record company so we got this song picked out by a songwriter in England and Nick came in and did his part. And from there it’s been going great.

Question: Nick, how is it to see your brother in the business with you?

Nick Carter: It’s weird because every time that I look at him I see myself when I was younger.

Question: What were you thinking for your outfits tonight?

Aaron Carter: I have no clue to be honest with you. It’s a bit of everything from the Vietnam.

Nick Carter: It’s a sort of tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

Aaron Carter: Well, Jimi Hendrix was against the war. And my brother is against me being little and competing against him so I guess it kind of collaborates with each other.

Question: Did you pick it out yourself?

Aaron Carter: Yeah.

Nick Carter: Basically. We just wanted to be crazy looking.

Question: Is everything set for your tour to restart?

Nick Carter: Yeah. We’re going back on the 24th of August. Everything is going to be cool and back together. AJ just got out.

Question: How is AJ?

Nick Carter: He’s good. All five of us just went out to lunch. We’ve been having meetings for the past two days. All five of us have been getting together since we’ve been here. We’re having meetings to get the tour back in order. Everything is good. He feels great and he looks great.

Question: Does this prove that celebrities aren’t unstoppable? How does this make you feel?

Nick Carter: You gotta always take care of yourself. That’s the number one thing.

Question: Aaron, what has the best advice that Nick has given you?

Aaron Carter: The best advice he has given me is...

Nick Carter: Your hair.

Aaron Carter: My hair?!

Nick Carter: No, tell them.

Aaron Carter: Meet my sidekick. Haha.

Question: What has been the best presents you’ve given to each other?

Aaron Carter: Punches and stuff.

Nick Carter: That’s the best present?

Aaron Carter: That’s my favorite present to give him.

Question: Did you know that you won the Choice Male Artist award when you were up there?

Aaron Carter: No. I thought they were going to give the award to someone else. I just started walking off stage.

Nick Carter: I did.

Aaron Carter: You knew?

Nick Carter: I knew when I saw them walk on stage.

Aaron Carter: Yeah, I’m sure you knew the whole time.

Question: Are there any new Backstreet Boy songs?

Nick Carter: Actually there are.

Aaron Carter: I’ve already heard them.

Nick Carter: Off of a new album.

Aaron Carter: Just kidding.

Question: How has your style changed over the years?

Aaron Carter: Well, it hasn’t really changed. I could go back to being in tights if you want me to. Just kidding. I like the cooler look, the whole army look. I just look tougher.

Question: Do you wanna go back to school?

Aaron Carter: Yeah, I wanna go back to school. I wanna study for marine biology, because that’s my dream. I just wanna learn more about the ocean. And have a big part with it and make it better.

GENEVA (Reuters) - A firm which makes Backstreet Boys' merchandise lost its cybersquatting case against Web sites with similar but misspelled versions of the U.S. teen-pop band's name, international arbitrators have ruled.

Backstreet Boys Productions failed to prove it had any rights to the Backstreet Boys trademark in its complaint against John Zuccarini of Pennsylvania who had registered such sites as backstreeboys.com, backsreetboys.com and backstreetboyz.com.

The California-based company sells compact discs, videos, clothes and jewelry featuring the U.S. group.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) said on Thursday that the company had provided evidence that the Backstreet Boys trademark belonged to a Louis Pearlman, but failed to explain its own relationship with Pearlman.

``The panel dismisses this case for failure of the complainant to establish that it has rights to the trademark on which it relies,'' WIPO's independent panel of arbitrators said.

The U.S. group, whose hits include ``I want it that way'' and ''Larger than Life,'' is just one of a string of celebrity names to be linked to so-called cybersquatting cases at the United Nations agency which promotes protection of trademarks and patents.

People registering famous names in the hope of selling them back at a profit is seen as the hottest online issue among celebrities.

Top actresses Julia Roberts and Nicole Kidman, tennis sisters Serena and Venus Williams and pop singers Madonna and Celine Dion, have all won cases at WIPO.

Bruce Springsteen and Sting have lost similar contests.

Messy Commute

HOUSTON -- The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood watch Thursday for the entire Houston area and suspended a tornado warning for Galveston County.

The heavy rains caused several fender-benders on the roadways, including an accident that involved a big rig belonging to the Backstreet Boys.

The accident happened shortly after 5 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 10 westbound near Katy Fort Bend Road in front of the Katy Mills Mall in Katy, Texas.

Investigators said that the 18-wheeler hydroplaned, jackknifed and then slammed into the center concrete median.

The freeway was shut down in both directions, forcing emergency crews to divert traffic onto the feeder roads.

The Backstreet Boys had performed in Houston Wednesday night at the Compaq Center in southwest Houston.

The big rig was one of four used in the group's tour. Authorities said it was carrying lighting and sound equipment.

No injuries were reported.

Cincinnati Enquirer Review: 8/25/01

Boys, reunited after rehab, wow Firstar Center

By Larry Nager

The night began with the end of the world, as a meteor storm set the earth ablaze on the video screens, echoed by a barrage of real fireworks pelting the stage.

It was a fitting start for the Backstreet Boys concert, since the group's career came close to flaming out just as spectacularly.

Saturday's show at Firstar Center was only the second since A.J. McLean, the group's designated “bad boy,” got out of rehab.

He was very upfront about it, as we've come to expect in these Behind the Music times. He told the young, near-sellout crowd — predominantly girls from 9-16 — that he'd been “52 days sober.”

Confessions aside, it was boy-band business as usual for the quintet. They've long since lost the bubblegum wars to 'NSync, the top-selling, stadium-filling boy band, but the Backstreet Boys have held on to a sizable audience and they know what their arena-size crowd wants.

Many of their fans were at their first concert, and the Backstreet Boys gave their parents their money's worth.

Their massive silver stage spanned the arena floor, reaching up eight rows into the side eats. They had 10 dancers helping them fill that stage, while their seven-man band labored in the shadows at the rear. Later in the show, they sang a couple songs from a tiny round stage at the rear of the arena floor, making their way back to the main stage on a walkway above the crowd.

The “Black & Blue” tour featured songs that that CD, including the obligatory opener, “Everyone,” with its lines, “Let's get on with the show.”

For most of their 110 minutes onstage, the Backstreet Boys portrayed idealized boyfriends, almost every song a pledge of undying love and fidelity.

Mr. McLean broke that pattern with his finale, “The Call.” A cheating song co-starring a cell phone. But the encore, “Shape of My Heart” brought things back to the more familiar puppy love.

They touched on older material, including the predecessor of “Everyone,” “Everybody (Backstreet's Back).”

They also sang their biggest hit, “I Want It That Way.” Their harmonies rang sweetly as ever, but coming early in the evening, it pointed up the real danger to the Backstreet Boys' future.

Like Hanson's “MMMBop” or Spice Girls' “Wannabe,” no other song in the Backstreet Boys' repertoire approaches such pure pop pleasure. The group still has its moments, as in the pretty “Time,” or Howie Dorough's feature, “How Did I Fall in Love With You,” but it seems the guys may have peaked artistically as well as commercially. Backstreet's back, but what now?

Sisqo, who's done more for the thong than Monica Lewinsky, kicked things off with a disjointed 25 minutes upstaged by his costume changes.

Alternating lame rap with mediocre soul, all backed by recorded tracks, he proved his awful show at the 2000 Coors Light Festival was no fluke. He needs to reunite Dru Hill. Now.

MILWAUKEE — Boys, even Backstreet Boys, will be boys.

At the band's first show since A.J. McLean left a rehabilitation center where he was treated for alcoholism, depression and anxiety, more than 14,000 fans at the Bradley Center welcomed the group back Friday with screams and shouts of "We love you, A.J."

The Backstreeters themselves, however, welcomed A.J. back with Silly String, dousing the mustachioed singer with the sticky stuff, along with hugs, as they wrapped up their first show in almost two months. (Click for photos from the performance.)

While that might have been the group's playful way of saying, "Welcome back, bro," the Boys did take time out to thank their fans for waiting for the group's Black & Blue tour to resume as McLean sought help. After the opening salvo of "Everyone," "Larger Than Life" and "Not For Me," Brian Littrell spoke for the whole group, saying, "As you guys know, we took a little break. If it wasn't for you guys, we wouldn't be here tonight. But the Backstreet Boys aren't the Backstreet Boys without all five of us."

After Littrell got the mostly female, mostly teenaged crowd to cheer for each of the group's three albums, he turned the stage over to McLean. Wearing a white suit and hat similar to what he donned for last year's solo tour as his alter ego Johnny No Name, McLean told the crowd he was trying not to cry as he thanked them for their support.

"I just wanted to say I wish I could go out and hug each and every one of you," the choked-up McLean said. "Thank you for letting me go through what I needed to go through to get myself better. I'm celebrating 51 days sober today.

"One day at a time," he added, drawing on a well-known motto of 12-step addiction recovery programs.

The audience didn't need Nick Carter's exhortation to "scream as loud as we can for A.J." — McLean consistently got the biggest cheers of any of the Boys throughout the 110-minute show. Looking trim and sharp with a fresh buzz cut, McLean took every opportunity to give love back to the crowd, kissing a video camera during "Don't Want You Back," hitting his solo with extra-soulful flourishes during "I Want It That Way" and hamming it up at any opportunity.

All five Boys conveyed a sense of excitement and relief throughout the show, exchanging knowing glances and smiles and hugging each other often. While the concert relied as much on spectacle as on music — with pyrotechnics and pre-taped skits occasionally slowing down the pace — the Backstreet Boys' camaraderie and love for their fans came through loud and clear.

The group's rendition of "Show Me the Meaning of Being Lonely," delivered from a smaller, circular stage at the back of the arena, was almost somber, even as each of the Boys waved and smiled at the crowd, all the while accepting stuffed animals and other offerings from adoring fans. Crossing a bridge over the audience back to the main stage as they sang "Time" from Black & Blue, each Boy took time to reach over and grab a hand or two.

The audience's unconditional love for the group, and particularly A.J., came through loud and clear every time one of them took a close-up on the video screen. And while some audience members admitted that the group's disclosure of McLean's substance abuse problems might have let a little bit of the air out of the Boys' balloon, most said that the group's forthrightness more than made up for it.

"It's cool that they would be honest with their fans and not lie about it," said 14-year-old Kristen Robbins of Madison, Wisconsin, referring to McLean's difficulties. "But they used to say, 'We don't drink, we don't smoke because it ruins the vocal cords.' They lied in one sense, but told the truth in another."

Nine-year-old Nicholas Benson of Milwaukee, wearing a fresh BSB T-shirt, was more forgiving. "A.J. was sick, and I'm just glad he got better," he said.

And in the end, A.J., with Silly String hanging off his head, just smiled. Backstreet's back, all right.

Backstreet Boys' Brian Littrell Launches Music Label

Brian Littrell spent the Backstreet Boys' six-week hiatus planning his future as a record mogul and television and film producer.

The singer has gone into business with his wife, Leighanne Littrell, forming a music label and entertainment production company called BriLeigh Productions.

Littrell insists that the family-oriented company does not signal his retirement from one of the world's most beloved boy bands — but he does plan to make it his day job when the group eventually cuts back on touring.

"I love being a Backstreet Boy, and I love performing, but the odds of actually traveling the rest of my life are slim," he said Tuesday while en route to a Backstreet Boys video shoot.

"I plan on making my schedule centered around being home more and doing less traveling — not necessary sitting behind a desk all day dealing with business, but being a family man and being a husband. ... If I could have it my way, it would obviously be to still make Backstreet Boys records and move forward in business ventures like BriLeigh Records."

The Littrells have been mulling the venture for two years but finally got it kick-started over the last month while Backstreet Boys took a break from their tour so A.J. McLean could go to rehab (see "Backstreet Boys Postpone Tour As A.J. McLean Seeks Treatment").

The couple will focus on building a small roster of acts for the record label first, but they plan to delve into film and television projects by the end of next year. Their first release will be the soundtrack to the indie film "Olive Juice," starring Leighanne in the lead role and featuring cameos by Brian driving a horse-drawn carriage and McLean playing a club DJ.

The soundtrack, which Brian and Leighanne pro
