| The Backstreet Boys is his first showbiz gig, but when you hear his voice you can tell that Brian Littrell was born to be a singer. Getting his start at his church chorus, this Backstreet Boy has been singing since he could walk. Born on Febuary 20, 1975 in Lexington, KY, Brian wasn’t just born with a love for music. Brian was born with a hole in his heart and a heart murmur. “When I was younger, I spent 60 days in the hospital and was given a 0% chance of survival,” he remembers. “The doctors told my parents I was going to die. So my life is a miracle. It’s a gift I received from all the prayers my family and friends said for me.” Those prayers were needed once again in May of 1998 when Brian underwent heart surgery to fix the hole in his heart. “I delayed the surgery twice because of the tours,” says Littrell. “I mean, the saddest thing is that I scheduled open-heart surgery around my work scedule. It was like nobody really cared or felt that it was important, because the career was moving on.” But luckily Brian came through with flying colors. And after eight weeks of recuperation Brian was back working. Phyiscally he had heeled but emotionally he wasn’t really ready to go back onstage. “I was sixty- five percent, really. My mind-set wasn’t there. But the show must go on.” And so it did, with an oxygen tank backstage for when he needed the extra air. Through the hole ordeal the fans were there for him. They supported him by sending get- well cards, flowers, and stuffed animals. It just shows the power of the fans. And every chance he gets he will thank all the fans for all their prayers and support for him through that ruff time. The date was April 20, 1993, and Brian Littrell was in Histroy when his cousin Kevin called him from Orlando. Kevin told of a group that he was in that needed a fifth member. That same day Brian left on an airplane on his way to Orlando not knowing what he was about to get into. What he got into is one of the most succesful groups of today. “I think it was destiny why we’re all here together. I never dreamed it would be worldwide,” says Brian. “It’s still kindof hard to believe.” Now Brian is 24 and touring all over the world performing for thosands of people. “You just glance out into the audience, and the lights go out, and the lighters come on... It’s just such a fullfillment inside, seeing all these people. Then you look out and there sining every word from every song- they came to see us? Then you’re excited.” Away from the bright lights and screaming girls Brian mellow and quiet. “When i step off the stage I’m like anyone else.” says Brian. Brian is a sports nut. In his spare time he like to play a little b-ball with his best friend Nick. He got the nickname B-rok from the prase ‘shoot the rock.’ And when there isnt a basketball hoop in sight, Brian will work on writing songs with Tommy Smith who is part of the Backstreet band. They wrote a song called the “Perfect Fan” that was included on the Millennium album, and another called “That’s What She Said” witch is on the Canadian and European release of the Backstreet’s Back album. Then the age old question of does Brian have a girlfriend? Well i hate to tell ya girls but he does. Her name is Lieghanne Wallace (trust me girls this is hard enough for me to write as it is for you to read). The two met at the vieo shoot for ‘I’ll Never Break Your Heart’. “During my heart surgury,” Brian said, “Lieghanne gave me strength. She’s my big love!” And what are Brian predictions for the future of the Backstreet Boys? “The main thing for us at the moment is getting this right. It’s going to be a long time before we think about calling it quits.” |
