WWF, WCW AND ECW News:
Darren "Droz" Drozdov will be appearing on WWF.com's "Byte This" this Thursday at 6PM EST to answer any questions and get well wishes from fans. This is definitely great news to hear, as I'm sure wrestling fans all over are anxious to finally see Droz again and get an update on his condition. We at TPWW all wish Droz a hopeful speedy recovery. Here is the official message from WWF.com: "Since suffering a neck injury at the SmackDown! taping on Oct. 5, Darren "Droz" Drozdov has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation at facilities in Philadelphia. Now, Droz would like to hear from you. This Thursday at 6 p.m. ET, Droz will be on Byte This! to answer your questions and listen to your well wishes. To have your thoughts or questions read on the air, please mail them to bytethis@wwf.com
Mankind recently answered all rumors of his apparent retirement from the World Wrestling Federation. Mick stated recently on TSN's Off the Record that he has retired from the WWF. However, Mick recently stated that he "may have said that a little prematurely" and that he will be sticking around in the WWF for a while longer. Mick stated that he did not think it would be right for him to leave the WWF at a time like this, where Stone Cold Steve Austin's future is up in the air. That is definitely great news to hear, and I'm sure many people agree with me. I definitely did not expect Mick to retire this soon, and I even went as far to post a message in the news and rumors stating that Mick won't be retiring any time in the very near future. Mick's career is definitely reaching its close, but it is still too soon for Mick to retire, at least in my opinion. For the official message from Mick, go to http://www.wwf.com/media/netshow/superstars/interviews/199912/mickretire28.asx
And speaking of good ol' Mick, he has apparently been invited to Syracuse University to be a visiting professor. Hmmmm, ok. The only thing I could imagine him teaching is physics, where he could discuss the angle and velocity at which he fell off the Hell in a Cell. No word yet on whether Mick will take the invitation, but it definitely shows that wrestling is finally getting some respect.
According to Wade Keller, Stone Cold Steve Austin will undergo surgery to relieve pressure on his spine on February 17, 2000. Austin will then need about another two months for rehabilitation after the surgery. Needless to say, it may be a while before we see Stone Cold Steve Austin on WWF television again.
WWF Smackdown scored a 4.6 rating, which is slightly above their four week average of 4.5. On the Southern side, WCW Thunder did a 2.0 rating, which is slightly down from their 2.0 four week average. Thanks to Dave Scherer for the numbers.
WWF Royal Rumble tickets for January 23, 2000 at Madison Square Garden have already sold out. Ticket holders of the MSG show this Saturday got first crack at the tickets, and judging from the huge percent of tickets sold that night, they took advantage of the opportunity. Tickets went on sale for everyone yesterday, and almost immediately sold out.
And speaking of tickets, tickets went on sale for Wrestlemania 2000 in Anaheim on Friday. The response has been "overwhelming" but there are apparently still tickets available. For information on picking up tickets through a special mail-order offer by WWF.com, click HERE.
The WWF apparently has plans to air yet another commercial at this year's Super Bowl between the New York Jets and New York Giants (Yeah, right). However, no plans have been made about the content of the commercial, or when it will air at the most watched event of the year. Last year's Super Bowl commercial was definitely a huge hit, which undoubtedly had a lot to do with the WWF's success. That, and Mike Tyson's appearances were the huge turning points for the WWF, in my mind, as they both brought great media exposure, which, of course, equals more ratings.
The WWF is starting a "campaign" to get the "Oh Hell Yeah" Stone Cold Steve Austin video on MTV's TRL. You can help the cause by voting for the video at MTV's TRL page. Click on "Play my song" then scroll down and choose "Other." Then enter "H-BLOKX" for Artist Name, and "Oh Hell Yeah" for Title.
Goldberg will be co-authoring a book with his brother, Steve, about Goldberg's life story. It should definitely be interesting. The book is set for a release date sometime around Christmas, 2000. Click HERE for more information. It seems like everybody wants to be like Mick.
It is expected that there will be some sort of development in the Lenny/Lodi situation in WCW in the next week or so. Reports are that Lenny and Lodi will be pushing for their release from WCW again sometime this week, as WCW has publically stated that the two would "never be on WCW Television again." Both the WWF and ECW have shown interest in signing the two, according to reports in the past week or so. Lodi has been requesting a release, only to be denid by WCW, who state that "it wouldn't be in [their] best interest" to release them.
The former Ryan Shamrock, Alicia Webb, known in WCW as Symphony, has apparently come to a contract agreement with WCW. Rumors were that WCW was not willing to pay her the amount that was requested, and the two were at odds for a while. However, they have apparently worked things out and Webb is expected to be on hand for Nitro tonight.
Wrath was recently released by WCW, but rumors are that WCW may work out a new deal to re-sign the monster known as Wrath. Wrath suffered a knee injury, which kept him out for several months. Some speculate that the reason WCW released Wrath was to re-sign him for less money, which seemingly is the case.
With WCW Thunder now being taped on Tuesdays, you can expect more of WCW's main event stars to appear on the show. Bret Hart, Goldberg, the Outsiders, The Total Package, and others are all expected at the show. With WCW Nitro in Milwaukee tonight, and Thunder in Madison, Wisconsin tomorrow, WCW wrestlers will not have to bare with a hectic traveling schedule to appear at both shows. Excellent move by WCW.
Dave Scherer reports that New Jack and Super Calo were both injured at recent ECW shows. New Jack apparently suffered back and hip injuries at the Thursday TNN taping while performing his famous dive off the balcony. Super Calo apparently suffered a bruised tailbone. Both wrestlers missed the ECW weekend house shows.
The man from Calgary... Albert Canada, Lance Storm, has opened his own official website. You can check it out at http://www.stormwrestling.com
ECW is expected to make an announcement about the location of the January 9th pay per view, Guilty as Charged soon. A location is yet to be determined.
