| New York Style Salsa |
Wepa Wednesday is the only club in Massachusetts where New York Style Salsa is taught and danced. This style was brought up from NY by April Genoves who is a dancer for the famous company, Razz M Tazz. She has danced with them for several years and is certified to teach. She teaches along with Sammy at the Hong Kong every Wednesday from 8:30 till 10:00. After the classes DJ Willie Chilino comes in and there is a club until 1 am. Wepa also offers workshops from beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Workshops are offered for all levels and they are for five weeks. Freestyle and partnering are covered along with a review for the past week(s).
All of the steps are broken down including freestyle and partnering as wells as the counts. This style of dancing is danced on clave, the 2nd and 6th beat of the music. This is how many people dance at the big clubs in New York. I went to the Copa last week and most of the people knew how to dance on 2. You know why? Because they take classes and practice!!! Please visit Wepa at 1236 Mass Ave on Wednesday nights. For info call: 781-765-1845.
Special guests at Wepa have included: Edie, the Salsafreak, Salsa Brava, Che from Razz M Tazz, El Conjunto Folklorico Nacional de Cuba, Nelson Flores with Descarga Latina, Santo Rico, Seaon Bristol, Gina, and El Nino Progidio. In November, Salsa Brava came, Edie, Jobie, Luis, and Oscar and offered workshops from beginner to advanced and they also gave a show. The most recent show was with Santo Rico at the Middle East Club and they gave an excellent performance. Osmar and his students will be giving a show Sunday Feb 13th so don't miss it. There will be another Wepa SuperSalsa party in March. More details to follow.
