Dance supply is very important. It is very hard to dance in heavy platform shoes not to mention the pain you will cause someone if you step on their toes. Ballroom shoes are used by latin ballroom and salsa dancers alike. They're light and they have a suede bottom so that you don't slip but yet can still turn easily. They are also very comfortable and flexibleand since the heel is skinny it forces you to dances on the balls of your feet and not flat footed. Of course men don't have high heels like women, but there are some syles that have an inch heel that give the men a little height. The only problem with these shoes is they are expensive, ranging in the price range of $100-$125 for men and women. You can keep the same pair for a long period of time and just keep changing the suede bottom. And if you don't want to pay that much, the ghetto way is to get a pair of regular shoes and have suede put on the bottom. The only problem now is you can't wear these outside so if you are going to a club you will have to bring them with you in a bag or in your coat pocket. Technically, you can wear them outside but the suede collects every piece of dirt, glass, paper imaginable and the suede will wear down quickly.

You can get alot of dance shoes, instruction books, latin ballroom music and used costumes at competitions. Latin ballroom competitions have vendors at the shows. I mention used costumes because new ones can range in the $1000's because the beads/feathers are all hand sown. Plus costumes have to fit you perfectly, even on the tight side because you can't pull up your straps and fix your pants when you are dancing. The used costumes range in the $100's.
