The Valley Center for the Blind provides services to the blind and severely visually impaired. The center was established by Dr. Andrea Schwartz in 1973. This year is the Center's 20th Anniversary.
At the center, the members give each other much needed support because of their common bond. The center provides individual and group rehabilitation couseling. Services are provided by trained staff and volunteers. Volunteers are always welcome.
To attempt to meet the needs of an estimated 10,000 blind or severely impaired people, the center provides a wide range of adaptive activities that will enable them to maintain maximum independence and remain in their homes. Many services are provided in the home, or by appointment at the center.
Individual and family counseling is available in the home or at the center to assist with personal or family adjustment to vision loss.
Peer support groups are conducted by staff and blind members to cope with sight loss.
Therapeutic recreational activities including knitting, crocheting, survival skills, typing, leather work, arts and crafts, bowling and relaxation exercises are available. Relation activities include concerts, circus, Ice Capades, lectures and plays.
Teaching skills of daily living and other services such as cooking skills and marking appliances are also offered.
Mobility training includes indoors and outdoor sighted guide techniques.
