"Where're you going?" Betty asked, as Jill ventured down the street.
"Just wanted to have a look."
"At what?"
"The old Kimball Mansion."
"Everyone says the place is haunted!" Betty complained, still holding back.
"You don't believe all that stuff, do you? That's what they tell kids, to keep them
away form the place. My father says the town owns it now. Something to do with taxes
and no known owner."
"EEEE..." she squeaked, as the frog jumped right into her face,
then back into the catch basin, to disappear under the murky water and leaves.
"What a find!" Jill exclaimed, as she looked over the sheets, in the old ledger. "I don't
suppose there's a chance I could get a copy of these?"
"It's not Jeff I don't trust," Jill
confessed.
"OH!" Betty said, then sat cross legged on the bed, facing Jill, for a long while,
thinking. "You got it that bad!"
Jill and Betty arrived at the rod iron gates bright and early Saturday
morning. Sheriff Taylor met them to open the gates.
"Geez!" Betty breathed. "Right out of Gone With The Wind."
"No way. Lets go get Jeff.
He'll go with us."
"If you insist." Jill said, giving in. She wasn't to anxious to go back in the place
unescorted.
"Just a bunch of old clothes, scardie cat," Jill chided, as she ran down to poke at the
heap, with the toe of her shoe.
"Do you have any idea what you have here?" Jeff asked.
"An old house full of junk?" "Antiques. That study alone is worth a fortune."
"All I saw was a bunch of old books," Jill said.
"Yeah! Bunch of old first editions. I recognized at least a dozen."
And he offered to sell it!"
"Yes. Said hadn't had any luck trying to auction the place off."
Jeff had the bag and was dumping its contents out on the floor, then the three were down
on their knees, pawing through the books and papers.
"Here it is!" Jill shouted triumphantly, holding up a yellow five by eight card.
"Mom, I think he means thousands." Jill advised.
"Oh!" Mrs. Baker gasped. "He paid twenty dollars for it!"
"That's the thing about antiques. It was worth twenty dollars to the seller, at the flea
market, where Jeff bought it." Ray explained
. "Don't you worry, I'll see the kids come
out in the black on this deal."
"Aeeee!!" Jill screamed, as something ran up the front of her work coveralls, and over
her head. She was dancing around in circles brushing at her hair, like her head was on
fire. Betty stood wide eyed, looking on
"What's wrong?' Jill asked. ?Please, don't tell me you found another body."
"Thirty five dollars wasn't that much for that pretty little ring," Jill's mother commented,
as Betty rejoined them. Mr. Baker burst out laughing.
"What"s so funny dear?" She demanded, as he took a slip of paper and wrote the
final bid on it. She read the note, looked shocked, and sat very quietly for the rest of the
auction. They were on their way home the next afternoon before she finally asked.
"Dear, were all those bids thousands?"
Ray took a black leather case from under his jacket, and sat it on the table. He opened it,
to reveal two silver plated derringers, with mother of pearl handles.
"These are quite rare. They were made for ladies purse guns, in the 1890's. This pair
is a matched set, and in mint condition."
"They're beautiful!" Jill exclaimed, picking one up gingerly.
"They"re .44 caliber, but what works best in them are .410 shot shells,"
so as of now, you are my deputies," he concluded, sliding a badge and I.D. folder across
the desk to each of them.
"I like that! Deputy Betty Thorn at your service Sir!"
Betty opened her purse and handed him the I D folder, and gently lifted the little
derringer from its holster.
"Geez! A pistol pakin moma, and she carries a badge too,"
"Met a guy." Betty said casually
"Robby proposed! If curly top agrees, we could even make it a double wedding." Jeff
suggested.
"Why you!!" Jill yelled, and took a swing at him
