Dick grew up around Trucks. First as a mechanic, repairing the big monsters, then as a driver.
Dick has been everywhere, done everything, if it has anything to do with trucks, at least once.
Dick is hauling freight. His old Pete is about worn out from all the miles a gypsy driver puts on his truck
when he meets a woman.
Peggy Sue Martinez comes into Dick's life like a whirlwind. He has no idea what her attraction
to him is, or what could possibly cause it. He is 51. She is 24. Dick thinks she is far to young for
the likes of him. Peggy has her own ideas on the subject.
The romance seems to be doomed. After a brief affair they part company. Dick spends the next few
years hauling freight and occasionally dreaming of Peggy Sue.
On again... Peggy Sue Marries a Rich Man from Tucumcari New Mexico. Poor Dick is heart broken.

But wait.. A year later, Dick discovers by chance that Peggy Sue has divorced her rich husband.
Chance meeting.

Dick and Peggy Sue accidently meet. Its old home week. They discover their love is still
alive and well. Dick discovers Peggy is quite well off. She owns her own ranch and was left very
well off by the divorce. They go on the road together.
Go on the road with Dick and Peggy. Thrill at their narrow escapes. Laugh at their comical antics.
Will they get married. Will they split up again. Will Dick survive his many close calls on the road.

| A PEEK BETWEEN THE (COVERS) |
A crusty old truck driver. A young New Mexico cowgirl. Hijackers, Crazy pilots and a thousand other things. Dick never fell in the sewer and came out smelling like roses. He always ended up with the end of the stick with the Do-Do on it Until he meets Peggy Sue.
I guess you wonder where I got the idea. Well, that's a long story.
I ran a news paper route for eleven years. All that time I talked to truckers on the CB.
I heard a lot of interesting tales in that time. Had four attempted roberies. Thanks to Strum Rugger and Co. none were successful.
I put all my experience with the truckers together and out pops Big Dick McCrakin. He is a combination of all my trucker buddies. I am very fond of the guys I met on the road. They deliver Americas freight across town, or across the country. Most of them were very nice people. Family men just like me. When Dick came to mind I relied on their information about driving problems and distances. Information on new constructions and such. They run from border to border, sea to sea and were very generous with their information. For this reason I want to dedicate Big Dick McCrakin to them. |
| DEDICATION |
I dedicated this book to all the truck drivers who run Highway 65 North between Little Rock and Springfield Mo. Without them and their conversations to pass the night hours while I was running my paper route I would never have gotten the ideas for this book.
I used some of their personalities and Ideas from some of their stories in the book.
In the nineteen nineties I spend many a night talking with these guys. They held second jobs as Airplane pilots, Mechanics, Body shop owners, Loggers and farmers. Each and every one of them had a tale or two to tell and I was there to listen as I slotted my papers.
They became my friends of the night and I thank them for their many ideas for this book. |
