Congressman Ciro D. Rodriguez came to the 105th Congress after a special election on April 12, 1997. Congressman Rodriguez quickly joined the National Security Committee to support our armed forces and the special place they have in his home town of San Antonio. He joined the Veterans' Affairs Committee to safeguard the rights and benefits of the thousands of veterans in the 28th District and the nation who answered the call to serve.
In the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Rodriguez has worked with local community leaders and has fought actively in Congress to ensure the positive redevelopement of Kelly AFB. He has also fought to protect and expand missions at Brooks AFB, Randolph AFB, Ft. Sam Houston, and Lackland AFB.
Congressman Rodriguez has been a vigorous advocate of strengthening public education, providing better benefits for veterans and military retirees, and protecting Texas farmers and ranchers. He advocates protecting Social Security and Medicare expanding access to health care, and promoting economic developement and small businesses throughout South Texas.
In 1997, Congressman Rodriguez obtained additional resources for regional techical assistance centers used by educators and school administrators and for the National Park Service to continue its acquisition of significant properties in the San Antonio Missions National Park. He helped spearhead the successful effort to bring new health care access points for veterans in South Texas. Elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1987, then-Representative Rodriguez held the chairmanship of the important Local and Consent Calendar Committee. He served on the Public Health Committee and the Higher Education Committee, and presided as a vice-chairman of the legislative Study Group, a coalition of progressive Texas House members.
From 1975 through 1987, Mr. Rodriguez served as a board member of the Harlendale School District, worked as an educational consultant for the Intercultural Developement Research Association, and worked as a caseworker with the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation. From 1987 through 1996, he taught at Our Lady of the Lake University's Worden School of Social Work.
Congressman Rodriguez attended San Antonio College and later recieved his BA in Political Science from St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He recieved his MSW from Our Lady of the Lake University. He and his wife of more than 20 years, Carolina Pena, have one daughter, Xochil Daria. |
