Simply put, Brown's better than Warrick
Now some of you know I am a die-hard Bengals fan, and I'm also a semi-Browns fan by region and family, but the Browns made a wise choice in taking Courtney Brown in my opinion on Saturday. Ok, so the NFL draft has come and gone and now it's time to find out who is a bust and who isn't.
The one thing that continues to shock me is the comments made by CNN-SIs Trev Alberts. First of all, let's not forget so soon that Alberts may go down in history as the biggest bust of all time. An All-American of out Nebraska, Alberts was drafted high in the first round by the Indianapolis Colts. On Monday Alberts said that one of the biggest mistakes made in the draft was committed by the Browns when they drafted Courtney Brown with the first selection instead of Peter Warrick.
Alberts' argument was that granted, Brown may be the next Bruce Smith, but how many Super Bowls has Smith won? He stated that Super Bowls are won by playmakers and Peter Warrick is a playmaker.
Granted, Bruce Smith didn't win any Super Bowls, but he did play in five(which by the way is close to equaling the total amount of games played by Alberts in his professional career). But while Alberts was quick to point out that Super Bowls are won by teams with playmakers, there are also a lot of playmakers at the college level that become busts in the NFL.
I'm not saying Warrick will be a bust, but he does kind of remind me of Desmond Howard. He's undersized at 5-10 and sometimes that spells trouble in the NFL. Most of the better wide recievers in the NFL are 6-0 and taller. Tell me the name of one good wide reciever in the NFL under 6-0 that isn't named Joey Galloway or Terry Glenn.
Warrick will be productive as he is in the right system alongside two great recievers(Carl Pickens who'll more likely than not be a Bengal again this year, and Darnay Scott the Bengals leading reciever last year), but he is not going to be the type of wide reciever to lead your team to the Super Bowl like a Jerry Rice or a Michael Irvin.
It was widely rumored that the Washington Redskins went with Chris Samuels in the third spot instead of Warrick because they were scared to death of another Desmond Howard-type draft pick.
With Brown though, Cleveland attained a player who dominates the line of scrimmage. He'll say few words(unlike his teammate from College Levar Arrington) but he'll get the job done. And believe me, he's mean enough. The skeptics have questioned it, but he has that Reggie White switch on him that can take you from "preacher" to demon when it's game time. Merrlin Olson played on Little House on the Prairie and Alan Page is a Supreme Court Justice in Minnesota. All nice guys off the field, but mean as can be on the field.
Regardless of what Alberts believes, championship teams are based on a strong defense. Granted last year, St. Louis nearly blew that theory away(they had an awesome D but the offense is what shined in that town last year) but when you look at the teams of the past, it has been defense that has stuck out and all of those defenses have had a player that can pressure the quarterback(remember Bruce Smith?).
Brown instantly give the Cleveland Browns' defense merit. His ability to rush the passer and his athletic ability to run the field will make an already strong linebacking corp even better.
Warrick can and will talk all the trash he wants about what he's going to do to Cleveland when he plays them(Sound familiar Akili Smith?) but the fact of the matter is that he will have a hard time doing much of anything when Courtney Brown is chasing down Akili Smith all day.
Think about it?
Aaron
