The best book I've read! I would defintely recomend this book, but I'd also recomend you wait until after reading the Lord of the Rings series. The book is much more enjoyable if you've already read some books on Middle Earth, so you know some of the history before reading it. It deals from the creation of Arda (Middle earth) into the first ages of Man. There are many mentions of Dwarves, and you can learn alot about them from this story. There is also a wealth of knowledge to be found on elves within this novel. The great evil in this story is Morgoth, and if you've read the Lord of the Rings, Morgoth is much more powerful then even Sauron!

The time line of this novel is expansive, unlike the Lord of the Rings, it covers a very large span of time. It does not focus around one thing, but many stories. Most of these stories are in some way connected to the Silmarils. Some of the tales you'll find in the Silmarillion, are the story's of Beren and Luthien, of Gondolin, and one of my personal favorites, of Numenor.
