Erebor, also known as the Lonely Mountain, is located east of Mirkwood, and west of the Iron Hills. Erebor was first settled by Thrain I in the year 1999 of the third age. It was populated by the dwarves that fled from the Moria.
For seven centuries the Lonely mountain prospered, and grew very wealthy, and collected vast amounts of gold. Unfortunately when the drakes and dragon's heard of the gold in Erebor, they attacked. In the year 2770 the dragon, Smaug, drove out the Dwarves, and there he slept and guarded the gold for nearly two hundred years.
in the year 2941 Thorin and company disturned Smaug (story told in The Hobbit). Smaug left the mountain in wrath, and was killed by Bard the bowman. The battle of five armies of fought shortly after, in which Thorin Oakenshield was killed. Dain II became king of the Lonely Mountain after the battle of Five armies.
In the war of the ring Erebor was beseiged, but after the ring was destroyed, Sauron's forces were destroyed or fled. The dwarves forged a close alliance with King Elessar (Aragorn), and helped in the rebuilding of Minas Tirith in the Fourth age. |
