Aulë, also known as Mahal, is the Valar that created the Dwarves. Aulë is the greatest smith, and loved not only by Dwarves, but also by the Noldor.
Aulë was the Valar concerened with substance of Arda, such as rock and metal. He was the builder and inventor of the Valar, and constructed Angainor, the chain of Melkor, and the vessels of the Sun and the Moon.
Aulë created the Dwarves before the children of lluvatar (Elves) came to Middle Earth. However, they were not aloud to wake till the Elves were born. Lluvatar was at first upset about what Aulë had done, creating a people without his permission, and giving life to something, which is beyond his power. Aulëwas about to crush the Dwarves with a hammer, when they cowered from the hammer. Lluvatar then spoke to Aulë telling him that the race now had life, only they would not wake on Middle Earth until after the First born. This was one of only two times the Lluvatar directly interferred with the history of Middle Earth. The other was when the Valar called upon him to drown Numenor, and the world was reshaped. |
