The Friendship
As we enter the 21st Century, we speculate as to the future of the friendship that has developed between Audubon and the USS BENFOLD. The entire crew is embraced by the total population of this patriotic community; from school children to senior adults. The crew, in turn, looks upon Audubon as their second home town, crew members vie for the opportunity to visit there.

School children, from elementary to high school take pride in the Memorial site, in the fact that three brave men gave their lives that they might be safe and free. Each of these children strive to become a part of the upkeep of the site, they write and send gifts and cards to the crew members. When the crew of the BENFOLD visit their schools they turn out en masse to visit with and learn from them.

Now a second ship is being constructed, to honor Nelson Brittin, who received his Medal of Honor for his heroism in Korea. The good folk of Audubon have already made plans to adopt this ship also. Plans are underway for a group of the Audubon residents to travel as a group by chartered bus to help celebrate the Christening.

The news of the patriotism in this community has spread far and wide. Audubon is known as an example of patriotism: as a result of their reputation for patriotism, the USS NEW JERSEY stands an excellent chance of making Camden, New Jersey her home. At this time she is on her way up the Delaware River toward her new home. Philadelphia is also in the running to host this ship.

Audubon has just received news of a Medical Center, built in 1976, which is being named for Benfold. As I receive more information as to the location of this Center, it will be posted on this site. (See Edward C. Benfold).

So, what does the future hold? No one knows, but . . . I guarantee you it will be exciting!!
Now Hear This!
On January 14, 2000; a ceremony was held in which a ceremonial copy of "The Green Wave and the Navy" was presented to Rear Admiral Jerry Johnson, Chief of Dental Services at Audubon High School by Scott Johnson, Anthony Simeone and Derek Everman, three of the designers of the Memorial. Melanie Aubrey couldn't make it as she is at Oxford, completing her education. This ceremony was televised by all three networks. And was attended by the co-authors, Craig E. Burgess and Danny K. Edgar, the publisher, Ella Dillon and the printer, Tom Wentz. Seven representatives of the navy were there as well as Congressman Rob Andrews.

Word was received that The USS NEW JERSEY will make her permanent home in Camden, New Jersey. And a copy of "The Green Wave and the Navy" will be prominently displayed in her museum.

Upon arriving home from the presentation, I was informed that "The Green Wave and the Navy" is being considered as a movie. Discussions between the agent and studioare currently being held.
