Mr Westphal,
I am writing to thank you for the wonderful program yesterday. I also wrote to ask if I could make or add something to the memorabilia. I think that Samuel Sampler, Nelson Brittin and Edward Benfold are very brave and honorable people. They deserve the Congressional Medal of Honor because of their hard work. The program in the rotunda was a wonderful way to remember Samuel Sampler, Nelson Brittin and Edward Benfold. Samuel Sampler did a great job saving 28 soldiers. Nelson Brittin was brave making the enemies surrender. Edward Benfold must have been an independent person because he picked up grenades that the enemy threw, and threw it back at them. Thanks again for the wonderful program!

Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
Thanks a lot for the presentation! I think all of your stories were great! But Nelson Brittin looked a little like Forest Gump in the picture.
The story I think was most interesting was when Edward Benfold picked up two bombs and held them on the enemy's chest. He killed himself for his people.

Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
Thank you for the tour. I really liked it and learned new stuff about Samuel Sampler, Nelson Brittin and Edward C. Benfold, I didn't even know that Brittin Street was named after him.
I thought Edward C. Benfold was the best it must have been very brave of him. Plus he didn't just save someone's life he killed two enemy soldiers. I also thought the ship was cool that was named after him.
I think we should set fireworks off on Memorial Day at the highschool. We should make a garden near the Memorial. Plus do what we do every year. Thank you for reading this note.

Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
Thank you for talking to us during our Western Hemisphere class. Even though we lost our precious school time :-) Even though I wouldn't admit it to my friends, I enjoyed most of it. I liked the part where you told us about the brave people that served our country. I liked the story about Nelson Brittin.
I don't have any ideas as of now for Veteren's Day. But don't worry I'm working on it. Wait, I've got one. I think you should give some kind of award to *Monica and *Sara. They deserve it.
Debbie Sander
(* Monica and Sara: the two seventh grade girls that had the benches installed at the Memorial site.)
Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
Yesterday at the presentation you talked to us about three guys who were in the army and the navy. You also told us about the monument outside the school. You played a tape for us, then we went outside to look at the monument.
The one that interested me the most was Samuel Sampler because he didn't let any of the 17 soldiers die.
Tom King
Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
On the Veteran's Day presentation we learned what that black thing in front of the school was. We also learned what all that stuff in A Building was. I would of never cared but now I do. I'm proud to know famous and warriors went to the school I'm in.
Edward C. Benfold interested me the most because to save someone's life and take your own is very brave. To take the grenades and risk your life and kill two enemys.
I think you should do this years and years to come, It was very cool to know that. I would be glad to become a part of the memorial project.
Kelly Wells
Thank you Mr. Burgess for telling us about the 3 Congressional Medal of Honor winners that graduated from Audubon High. I never knew about these people, and I appreciate you telling me about them.
Edward Benfold's story was most amazing to me. I never could have done the same thing.
I also think that Samuel Sampler's story was very interesting. He was very brave to run out of the trenches after the enemies.
Next year for Veterans Day there should be an assembly in the auditorium. You could make it longer & have other guests come & talk to us.
Thank you again for your time.

Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
I enjoyed yesterday because we got to learn about the three American heroes. We started in the rotunda and the benches in the rotunda, we talked about the three heroes and the benches and the memorial.
I love to talk about Edward Benfold. He was a medic. While trying to take care of a Marine two grenades were thrown at him. He grabbed them ran over to the people who threw them. He held them to their chest and killed them including himself. He truely was a hero.
I think a good idea would be to do the samething as yesterday but make it longer.
Alex Cooper
Dear Mr. Westphal,
Yesterday I learned that there were 26 veterans that graduated from Audubon Highschool. There were three honored ones, Samuel Sampler, Nelson Brittin, and Edward Benfold. They each were Congressional Medal of Honor winners.
The most interesting story was about when the seniors made the memorial at the front of the school. They made the plans and everything. They ordered the materials and now it looks great. If I had a chance I think that a couple of friends and I could accomplish it too.
Next Memorial Day I think that each year they should honor one Audubon service member. Or they should invite someone from Fort Dicks. And they could tell us a little bit about being in the army, navy or naval course.

Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
The presentation was very good. I learned a lot. I know a lot now about Samuel Sampler, Nelson Brittin and Edward C. Benfold. It's cool that Edward C. Benfold went to our school.
Edward C. Benfold is the most interesting to me because I know about him the most and he seems to be the most famous and heard of.

Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
Thank you for the presentation on 11/9/1999 it was wonderful. It was one of the few presentations that I enjoyed.
After hearing what the other students did I decided that I would also like to do something. I don't know what to do, where to do it, or how I could do it but I want to do something.
Your presentation helped me to feel so much pride for our school. Pride is a great thing to feel! I also feel pride for what the students from Audubon High did to show their pride! I think that in some way every student should be involved with keeping everything nice.
Thank you very much!
Jamie Brazier
Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
Thank you for the Veteran's Day program during Western Hemisphere. It is cool to know what that big Memorial is for. My favorite soldier is Nelson Brittin because he went on a kamakazi mission and ended up capturing enemy soldiers. It was very brave to run out in open fire and pick up grenades. For Memorial Day we can light off a bunch of firecrackers.
Steven Mustero
Dear Mr. Westphal and Mr. Burgess,
I really enjoyed yesterday's introduction to the people who faught in the war. It was really fascinating to hear that we had special and popular people in the war! Especially that they were from Audubon and got the Medal of Honor!
Who interested me the most is Samuel Sampler! Because he saved 17 men, & that takes a lot of guts!
My suggestions are that you should put a saying on how these guys should be honored and praised in a certain way! Like another small wooden thing like Lori! And have a saying on top of it.
