A school teacher from Audubon High School and his wife were driving to Pennsylvania with a specific destination in mind. They got lost. The wife was berating her husband for his inability to read a road map and his stubbornness about asking directions.
Seeing a gentleman working in his yard, the school teacher pulled to the curb to ask directions. After a bit of conversation the gentleman remarked, "I see you have New Jersey plates, do you happen to know where the little town of Audubon is?"
The school teacher replied, "yes, we are from that area."
"Have you ever seen that memorial that sits on the lawn of the High School?"
"I see it every day. I have taught at Audubon High School for several years."
"I am a former marine. The memorial in the center is for the man who saved my life in a foxhole in Korea in 1952."
Yes, that is correct, this was one of the two marines, Major Ed Gallagher, who was saved by Edward Benfold on that fateful day. He had read about the memorial prior to it's dedication and contacted the students to confirm that it was the same Ed Benfold who had treated him in that faxhole in Korea so many years ago. They invited him and he was present at the dedication. The four students moved on and his whereabouts were no longer known. He had not heard of the book.
Major Gallagher went on to fight and obtain more injuries in Viet Nam. He is now retired and living Outside of Hershey, Pennsylvania, where he spends much of his time speaking to and dealing with high school students. Arrangements are now being made for me to meet the Major when I travel to New Jersey in August. WHAT AN HONOR !!!
The school teacher brought this information along with the gentleman's phone number and address to Mr. Burgess. On Wednesday, the 7th of June, Craig Burgess will drive to Pennsylvania to visit with the ex-marine and present him with a copy of the book that came about in a large part, because of him.
When Craig called and told me about this, I got cold chills down my back. I do not believe in coincidence. Do you?
