A new publication that celebrates the friendship that has been established between the town of Audubon - - - home of Medal of Honor recipient Edward C. Benfold - - - and the crew of the naval destroyer named in honor of the Audubon hero, killed in action in the Korean War. The content focuses on four histories: the town, the hero, the ship and the friendship. . . . . . . Craig E. Burgess

Mr. Westphall and the Staff of Audubon,

Today was the 224th birthday of the United States Marine Corps. The day we stop to remember and acknowledge all the Marines who have come before me so that I may have the privilege and honor of wearing the uniform today! As I traveled the majority of Camden County today, I received greetings and birthday wishes from former Marines and supportive Americans. My visit to Audubon High School was by far the highlight of my day. In a day and age where patriotism has been put on the back burner, your school and community have broken the mold. Your school has a sense of pride and patriotism that is untouched. I would like to thank the staff of Audubon, and yourself for the hospitality and cooperation the Marines and myself have received. Thank you and God bless.
Semper Fidelis,
Sgt. Knapp, USMC

I was so honored to be considered as publisher of this book. This is my most important project; I feel as though I know Edward Benfold; many times, while typing, I'd find myself in tears and would just sit back and sigh. I was privileged, in September, to meet Mrs. Waida, her son and grandchildren. I was overwhelmed at their courage and pride. I also met three of the four students selected to serve on the Project Memorial Foundation this year and, hopefully, next March, I will meet the four students from the class of 1994 who created the Memorial. I did have the opportunity to attend the 2nd birthday of USS BENFOLD, and will be attending the 4th this coming March 30th. I feel that this book is my greatest achievement with the exception of my own son . . . . . Ella Dillon
