Thank You for sending in your Miss Universe Viewer Comments!
MIGEE of Philippines: It was a bad year for the Philippines....Judges were blind!!! I believe that Nina Agalao (Phil) should be in the top ten. She was the crowd favorite in Cyprus. The judges were not good enough in selecting. It's ashame!! I hope the Miss universe organization will do better next year... The opening presentation was dry...The top ten candidates were not the best!!! Some of them were pretending and acting as a winner!! I beleive it Aruba, Philippines, Mexico, Germany should be there. For me the presentation of Miss Universe in Taipei (1988), Bangkok (1992), Singapore (1987), Manila (1994 and 1974), Cancun (1989) and Trinidad (1999) was exceptional!! but the Miss U in Cyprus and Miami (1997) was UNSATISFACTORY!!!
James Lim of Philippines: I really felt very disappointed when Miss Philippines did not even made it to the top ten. I watched her during her National Competition ( Bb Pilipinas 2000) in Manila and she was absolutely stunning and even the best we've got so far in winning the crown aside from Mirriam who did well last year. Its been a long time since the Philippines made it to the top ten except last year when we almost got the the crown. I hope you could read the bios of the top ten of this year's pageant and see which of them really deserves to be in the top ten. I notice india has been doin great for thepast 9 years they are able to make it to the top ten. To Miss Philippines Nina Ricci Caldo Alagao, I thnik you deserve to be sent to another pagaent like Miss World or Miss International. Prove yourself worthy of a crown My BINIBINING PILIPINAS! sayang ka kasi!
Rose McCall of USA: Lighten up People, Its only a Pageant! Having judged them for more than fourteen years, counseled contestants and trained a few, I think my pageant friends comments about both the pageant and the contestants are WAY OFF! The Miss Universe Pageant has changed, but so have most of the major televised pageants. If they stayed the same, only the ones like us would watch them. Face it - the company is owned by a new group and they want a new attitude and focus. First, I saw nothing wrong with any of the numbers. I think you all forgot that these people were doing this at 4:00 Cyprus time! Who's awake then?! These people should be commended for the excellent job they did just staying awake. Second, back off of Canada. She was nice, attractive and those were not implants. Some of us are more blessed than others and shame on you that think otherwise. Last, but certainly not least - I love Lara Dutta. I picked her out after looking atthe Femina India Pageant. She wanted the title. She worked at it. She trained for it like an athlete. This is the Miss Universe Pageant and you have to have something going for you to win it - nobody gives it to you. She worked with a diction coach to improve her English pronunciation, the Indian committee bought the best dresses and gowns for their contestant and she kept her eyes open and her mind on overdrive. Miss Universe is owned by English-speaking companies. I have no sympathy for any country that does not prepare their contestant with concentrated English lessons and physical fitness coaches. If you judge pageants, just watch and take notes. If you're an armchair judge and you've never been in a pageant, you REALLY need to get a life.
Joseph Daoang of Hawaii: I really dissapointed when Philippines didnt make the top 10. She looks great during the preliminary. When the top 10 were called, i didnt get the excitment like last year. She should have been given a change. The pageant is very boring without the interview. I believe that the interview portion is more important than swimsuit and evening gown because it give the judges a change to see the delegates express themselves infront of millions of viewer. The opening is great but i prefer the parade of nation like they did in T&T last year, this year, they didnt even show philippines face. I feel that the organizer of the pageant this year didnt really did a good job. Also, they didnt show Cyprus that much. I remember when they held the pageant in Philippines in 1994, they really showcase the Philippine's beauty, and it became a part of the pageant. The philippines has lots ot beauty and I think they showed it all. They need professioal judges for the preliminary, so intelligent and gorgeous delegates wont be sent home with a broken heart.
Arun Bagga from India: First of all, I'd like to answer a query of a friend who said that the judges did it for Miss India this time. Well, its said that Miss India gave the same answer that she gave in the interview a few days back and I totally agree to that. Perhaps the answer was almost the same, but, just not forgetting the fact that you are standing in front of a hundred thousand number of people cheering for you, you are bound to be under a lot of pressure. Although Lara tried to keep herself cool all the way even if her heart was pounding from inside, the final answer was much- much better than the other two, what if it was the same answer? She at least had the courage to speak the thing which was of course not stolen from somebody's else interview or speech. Had it not been her words, I would have given it a thought, but, since it was her answer, I don't mind, even if it is repeated. And, afterall the judges were impressed. Now, getting back to this year's pageant, it was a good pageant although there were a whole lot of things missing but still India's win washed away all the dismay. Lara was confident, well poised, elegant and a real beauty to bag the crown. I had a chance to meet Lara Dutta after Miss India when she came to our Fashion Designing institute and while we were having a chat with her, she assured us that she will bring back the crown after Sushmita and wow, she is right. She has really made our country proud once again. Now, both the prestigious titles of Miss World and Miss Universe are with India. What a way to start the new century!! Now, India is waiting for Lara Dutta to return to her home and be prepared for a warm WELCOME!! Lara, you really made our day.
Alex: As television viewer, I honestly don't like the scoring system. It shouldn't be shown to television viewers, for it messes up the whole scenario on the competition. I say we should take it out and let us enjoy the competion instead of having the television viewers know exactly who will make the finals. Don't you think so.
Alex Sarmiento of USA: I read the Nielsen ratings on Wednesday and I was surprised to realize that the 2000 edition of the Miss Universe Pageant ranked 58th or something like that. Then I flashed back three months earlier to FOX Television's broadcast of Who Wants To Marry A Multi Millionaire? and I was appalled. The latter, comprised of 50 of the most ridiculous women in this or any universe, made the top ten of the Nielsen list the week it premiered with 32 million viewers. The Miss Universe pageant raked in almost one-fifth of that. I guess America will shun a contest in droves that celebrates the good qualities of not just women but of all humanity and yet flock in front of their televisions to watch Darva Conger degrade the institution of humanity and marry a guy she doesnt know. How ironic is that? But anyway, this is what I think of the Miss Universe 2000 Pageant. I LOVED IT! I found it to be the most enjoyable in years. Miss India, Lara Dutta, was definitely the cat's meow. I found her to be more qualified for the Miss Universe crown than Bill Clinton was for the United States presidency. Her voice was phenomenal and when she took the microphone from Sinbad (who did a brilliant job in his own right) in the final question round she truly became in an instant the picture-perfect definition of not only "Miss Universe" but "diva". The top ten were spectacular, but I thought Miss South Africa and Miss France were unjustly scored way below their potential. So what if Heather Hamilton has big hips and Sonia Rolland was tentative? They handled the competition well. I think if the judges did not like them so much, why did they put them in the top ten? If anything, Miss Estonia was bubbly and fabulous albeit she looked like Ally McBeal with implants. I personally hoped Miss Japan and Miss Mexico would at least be in the top five. Oh well, Mayu was still great and Leticia can console herself in that she won two crystal trophies and pocketed about $6000. To conclude, I want to know what people have against Kim Yee, Miss Canada? I thought she was the bomb and exuded far more divadom than most people have had in years other than Lara Dutta. And believe me, I am not of the heterosexual persuasion, but I definitely believe that Kim was blessed with those breasts and that she did not go under the knife. What a brilliant selection of beautiful and intelligent divas! Next year in Venezuela, I bet the competition will be intensely competitive to the point that the divas end up duking it out Jerry Springer-style for the world championship, and that would be in itself far classier than Who Wants To Marry A Multi-Millionaire?, that's for darn sure.
Albert of USA: The 2000 Miss Universe Pageant is far by the worst ever! I can't believe how much the U.S.A & Universe pageants have changed. I've watched and collected them for the past 20 years. If serious changes are'nt made, they will suffer even more with where these pageants rank in t.v. ratings, and then after...there NERVE to wonder WHY? There's not enough personal time given to each delegate to demonstate herself by announcing who she is and from what country and by best showing off their national costume which represents the unique individuality of each girl. This year as I watched from home, I could barely hear the announcer say the delegate's homeland and to top it off, they barely would even show the delegate. They showed them way TOO quickly that when I was writing and changing choices, I'd miss the viewing the "next" delegate. So this, by early in the show, I've already felt burned by not being able to see them the way I've always been used to. Then, what happened to the suspense when hearing the top-ten selected? Why weren't the camera men between the girls instead of a huge big overcam that would zoom in only 2 seconds after they were each introduced? To me, the reactions of a suprised, crowd favorite or even a never before top-ten delegates name being called, will to be the one be the one that'll make watching the whole pageant more interesting and challenging because it those "natural" moments that'll be rememered throughout the entire show leading to it's suprise ending. Taking out the Interviews was very damaging. The judges got to hear them, but we didn't and so WE wonder why and how Miss South Africa, Miss Estonia and Miss Canada or France got into the semi-finals. The opening of the pageant was okay, but not one of the best. The pageant itself is missing the glitz and glamour. I also miss the preliminary scores that were shown on t.v. during either the "Parade of Nations" or the old "Preliminary Swimsuit Segment", that was usually shown but pre-taped. Where are the "Little Sister's?" Or the men who used to serenade the finalist in the evening-gown competition? Years ago, there would usually be a singer who would sing to them them and show them up & close (a very personal moment). All of these things are so missed by myself and I'm sure others too! - As for the pageant itself that dreadful night, I was surprised to not see Miss Germany, Mexico, Philippines, Aruba. Although I liked others such as Brazil, Panama and Korea. Korea didn't suprise me and the asian girls seem to always be overlooked, until the pageant is in their homeland(1988) then they kick every in the stomach! It's sad it happens to be that way but you know it's the truth! After this years semi-finalist were selected I had to route for Miss Colombia, not only was she a stunning latin-lovely, but they've too been overlooked so much and sometimes even cursed with the "1st Runner-Up" position. Not too shabby, but I'd love to see the country win sometime, despite all the ridiculism and controversy this country has to deal or face with Judges in any type of contest. India was well-deserving as was Venezuela. Miss Venezuela was actually a shock to me. I really didn't think she'd make it this year after viewing some not too cute pictures of her. But like someone else said," She's way more attractive on stage." France was cute and so was Canada. C'mon people, if there are male judge (in a swimsuit comp) judging, they're going to want to see all the skin and BOO's possible! And ya' all know it. Face it...thats' way Miss Colombia failed in the swimsuit category. The one-piece did her NO justice at all, if anything it hurt her tremendously because with her 2nd place position in the Evening-Gown comp and the people there were even saying she was a crowd-favorite, had she landed in the top-five, she could have easily walked away with the crown or even did the repeatedly "cursed, 1st Runner Up" thingamagig. I was quite surprised with Zimbabwe, South Africa and Estonia too. Oh well, life goes on! Hopefully CBS and Trump will make "MAJOR CHANGES" for the future of a once highly-rated syndicated (You & Me and the entire World) sit down true-nailbitter of a show!
Amparogie: There is obviously a pattern of disatisfied audience based on all the comments received for this year's Miss Universe Pageant. Is there any way to find out who the judges were for the preliminaries and how they scored the delegates. There's a lot more better candidiates that did not make it to the top 10 such as Miss Philippines and Miss Germany. I hope all these comments can be forwarded to the organizers so that they can fix all these concerns people have for the pageant. Otherwise this will go downhill and will not probably attract audience in the future and for sure ratings will suffer.
Arjan Wolfs of Netherlands: I liked the opening number, but I realy missed the perlimenairy scores. The delegates looked great and there where a few who looked beter in person than on the pictures (Germany). The Top 10 was great, but i did not like Canada and South Africa. I really missed Netherlands (who was 12th), Aruba and Philippines. The fact that there was not a interview competition in the semi-finals was a big disapointment. I think they did it so the judges would look at beauty first and then at intelligents. I liked the song for the swimsuitcompetition and i liked the setting. I thought South Africa did not have such a beautiful walk. She kept on bouncing up and down, and as for Canada, discusting. Those brest realy slapped me in the face. I did not like her, although she did have a nice personality. As for India, Venesuela and France WOW. The eveninggown competition had a nice song, but it was to short. Miss France had to walk on stage with almost no music left. I did not like the dress of miss Zimbabwe. The dress she wore in the perlimanairy competition was much beter. Miss Colombia was beautifull and so was Venesuela and India. Miss Estonia had an interesting gown. I did not totaly like it, but there was something about here. And Canada kept pushing here shoulders forward which made here look a bit strange. I was glad with almost all the finalist accept with Canada. I would have liked to have seen France there. Venesuela was lovely and did a great job in speaking in English. It Made me like here even more. As for USA. Here awnsers where to short and she did not shine. As for India. It was clear that she would be miss Universe the moment she opened here mouth. And she did. congratulations to Lara Dutta Miss Universe 2000.
Gil of USA: Miss Universe was such a disappointment. It's not what it used to be. There was no suspense, no sashes, too many commercials. The show resembled a modeling contest.
CAJUNGUY81 of USA: I knew Miss India had it from the beginning because she was confident in herself, but the one girl who I was disappointed in was France. She was beautiful, but she was nervous big time. I enjoyed the pageant, but I wish they would go back to the way they had in 1997 when Brooke Lee won Miss Universe. I wish it would be 6 instead of 5 I also wish they had the booth back that the remaining delegates would go in while the one delegate was answering the question. I also miss in the presentation show, how the girls were introduced not in order, but by continent and they had their costumes on as well. I really do wish over all that they would play the old "Miss Universe" song that they use to play after every queen won. I know change is good, but I just think that some of the changes weren't necessary.
Diego deRivera: Congratulations on the new Miss Universe, Lara Dutta! She won hands down, after the luckluster performance of the judges in giving her the competition that would have made her winning more memorable. I am sure by now, there will be sour-graping from some people, But, like them I have questions about the presence and absence of candidates as semi finalists. Anyway, as the two charlatan/vice-announcers said,"the Philippines and germany did not make it!" That in a way sums up the frustration of many viewers. Personally, I would have wanted to see Miss Philippines, Miss germany, Miss Puerto Rico with the top ten. But it never happened, I am sure the judges have their own standards --- and there lies another problem! The other problem I guess is teh new owner/manager of the problem, who has ONLY an eye for blondes! Even Miss U 199 has colored hair! Now for the year 2001 will the Miss U organizwers get their acts together?
Ron of USA: What a great site to vent all of our feelings about this travesty of a pageant. Ok now on to the pageant. Was that a crock or what? You know why they didn't show the prelim scores? So that we couldn't do the math and figure out who the top ten really were? I personally feel that France and South Africa did not belong there. Miss USA was not strong at all. I would've picked Philippines, Mexico, and Aruba to take their place. I'd like to see the results if the prelims were conducted without contestants wearing their banners. What did you do to the national costumes, isn't that the whole point? To appreciate beauty from all cultures? What happened to the Interview? Does interview not count? They are really contradicting themselves of the validity of their organization if the the topten are reduced based solely on evening gown and bathing suit. I think Estonia would have won the crowd over and at least made the race interesting if she had the chance. And the translators were absolutely horrible. Miss Universe organizers, you better redefine yourselves for the better, before you get redefined by viewers.
