Miss Universe Pageant 2000:
What a hard task the preliminary judges had this year. 79 of the most beautiful women in the world all competing for one of the 10 positions in the Semi-Finals. I had the task of scoring all 79 delegates on their Question and Answer Interview, Preliminary Swimsuit Photo and Preliminary Evening Gown Photo. It is hard to judge a delegate based on a photo because you don't get to see the delegates walk and stage presence. I scored the delegates anyway in all 3 categories and I have listed the top 10 delegates in each category with the highest scores. Below are my top 10 and final Miss Universe delegate rankings.

Interview:
I always enjoy reading the delegate profiles and answersto the different questions. In this category, I judged the delegates on their education, truthfulness of answers, current and future goals, content of answers and charity work or jobs. Below are the top 10 delegates whom I think had the best overall answers.
Puerto Rico
USA
Ghana
India
Philippines
Venezuela
Aruba
Bahamas
Mexico
Angola
I was impressed with Ghana. She is one of the few that started a organization for children, the "Central Kiddies Organization". Aruba I liked because she has a story to tell. She is a army brat, plus her mom was Miss Aruba back in 1960. From Ecuador, I got a feeling that she didn't want to do this. Her answers were short and not good. France defiantly has a story to tell. Unfortunantly, she didn't tell it. She is from Rwanda, Africa and while her country was in war, her family fled to France. I was surprised at some of the delegates because I knew they would be number 1. Japan has attended MIT in Massachusetts and will be going to Harvard in the fall. I just knew her answers were going to be the best. I think she could have expanded a little more on her education. The top jobs for the delegates are Business and Law.
Swimsuit:
Swimsuits is probably the hardest category to judge, especially if you are looking at a still picture. Many of the girls are above 5'9 and I expected them to shine. Judging in this category consisted of the delegates legs, stomach, toned body, stage presence, swimsuit chosen, stance and height. For the most part I can say all the delegates looked good. But, one delegate in particular stood out among the rest. I will get to that later. Below are the top 10 delegates with the highest scores.
Aruba
USA
Venezuela
Australia
Trinidad-Tobago
Ghana
Spain
Lebanon
Zimbabwe
Philippines
All I have to say is WOW!. I had a hard time choosing between Aruba and USA. Aruba looked a little bit better than USA. But pretty much the the same. Colombia looked nice but she looked a little thick but nice toned legs. India, well alot better than Gul Panag in 1999. Cyprus looked very skinny. Greece looked very uncomfortable and her shoulders her hunched up. Finland looked like she had ate something and her face swole up. Poland, Norway, Korea, and Ukraine were all skinny. Netherlands was the surprise, very lean and the best body from Europe. What can I say about Venezuela? Well, she is not your typical plastic queen. Venezuela is a little skinny but she has one of the best overall bodies in Cyprus. Not the best Venezuelan queens but she left her mark. One delegate who stood out the most in Swimsuit was Turks & Caicos. She is VERY LARGE. She is about 5'10 and could possibly weigh close to 170lbs. But I admired her stage presence. She looked more comfortable than most of the delegates. I know she didn't get high marks from the judges but she certainly impressed me.

Evening Gowns:
I was really looking forward to judging this category. I wanted to see all the designs of gowns. I was looking to see alot of plain and simple gowns, but I did not see that. This is not a hard category to judge. Most of the delegates had beautiful gowns but then there were some major exceptions. I scored the delegates based on her gown & color, make up, hair, comfortable on stage, and overall stage presentation. Below are the top 10 delegates with the highest scores in this category.
USA
Trinidad-Tobago
Zimbabwe
Aruba
India
Japan
Guam
Italy
France
Netherlands
What can I say. The above 10 had the best Miss Universe gowns. There were more but they didn't make the cut. Aruba, WOW! Beautiful simple elegant white gown. France, beautiful gown but I am not sure about the gloves. They kind of took away from the beautiful gown. Guam, beautiful simple yellow gown. Italy, WOW! Not a favorite for a semi-final position but her gown was clearly tops. White gown with a mini wrap around. Japan had a nice gown also, but the top looked very tight. Netherlands what can I say. I liked her style. The gown she choose fit her well and I loved it on her. Panama's gown was different. St. Martin had a interesting gown. Some like it, some don't. I like it. Ukraine looked nice in her beautiful white gown but she should have worn her hair up. Venezuela in in white again. Her gown is not the best, but it looks like she can wear it well. USA, well this was clearly the most improved delegate in terms of gown. I loved her beautiful gown, I was worried about her hair but she wore it back and she looked very elegant. Trinidad-Tobago was another looker. A beautiful olive gown with a unique wrist bracelet. These were clearly the best gowns. With the best comes the worst. I do not call myself a fashion expert but some delegates should have did a little better. Chinese Taipei, some delegates can wear all red but she can't. Denmark looked like someone had wrapped a red cloth around her. Egypt was my favorite until I saw her gown. Hong Kong, well she is almost 50/50. I liked her gown but the fur cover up messed her up big time plus having fruit hanging from the gown did not look too nice. Mauritius was another favorite for me till I saw her gown. Her gown looked unfinished. Norway, black shoes under a red dress, NO!. Puerto Rico, well I have almost grown to like her blue gown. But I don't like the hanging sleeves. Sources say that if she makes top 10, she will dump that dress and wear a beautiful Versace dress. South Africa looked nice but her hips are wide and it showed. Thailand, what can I say. Probably the worst dress on the Miss Universe stage. Too busy, unappealing and her shoes must have been 6" tall. Hungary & Estonia bascially had on the same gowns, just different colors. Two of the weirdest gowns I have seen. Hungary looked like a piece of metallic foil with ruffles. Estonia might not be the best delegate in Cyprus but she certainly does have lots of fun. I predict her as the Congeniality winner.

Well there you have it. My favorites in the 3 major categories. From the categories I have a final composite score. The highest scores are my top 10 delegates. Not surprising to me because I think any of them will make a great Miss Universe.
Jamil's Miss Universe Top 10:
USA
Aruba
India
Trinidad-Tobago
Zimbabwe
Venezuela
Ghana
Philippines
Mexico
Puerto Rico
Last year I only got 3 out of 10 correct. Based on previous Miss Universe Pageants, I think that I have at least 5 correct. From this top 10, I do not have a winner. Of course I would like to see USA win but who knows. If you recall, last year USA did not make the top 10. The first time since 1976. This year, many think Venezuela will not make it. I can say prior to the presentation show I was with them. But overall Claudia shinned to me and I think she will make it. Also last year we say Ghana make the semi-finals for the first time. I really like this years representative and hopefully she will make it.
Possibilities:
South Africa
France
Japan
Lebanon
Colombia
The above 5 are 50% of my bubble list. I think they have the best chances to make the top 10. They didn't excel in all 3 categories but clearly semi-finalist material. South Africa has made the top 10 for the past 2 years, this years best competition is Interview. Japan grew on me and I like her. I would have to see her on stage though.

Other 50%:
Netherlands
Guam
Brazil
Italy
Bahamas
Jamaica
Angola
Bahamas, Jamaica and Angola were all tied for the 20th position. From this group, I want to see Netherlands. I have rooted for the Netherlands every year of participation since the beautiful Vinienne Yansen competed in 1992. I would like to see Netherlands in the top 10 again this year.
Here is how the remaining 59 delegates placed:
23. Hong Kong, Spain
25. St. Martin
26. Panama, Germany, Ukraine
29. Namibia
30. Australia, Cayman Islands
32. Costa Rica, Switzerland
34. Chinese Taipei, Canada
36. Ireland
37. Nigeria, Belize
39. Dominican Republic, Bulgaria
41. Bolivia, Greece, Estonia, Russia
45. Mauritius, Guatemala
47. New Zealand, Finland
49. Peru, Norway
51. Israel, Uruguay
53. Denmark, Yugoslavia, Singapore
56. Egypt, Great Britain
58. Czech Republic, Honduras
60. Sweden
61. Belgium, Paraguay, Portugal
64. Slovak Republic
65. Chile, Korea, Cyprus
68. Poland, Malaysia, Malta
71. Croatia
72. El Salvador, Ecuador
74. British Virgin Islands
75. Thailand
76. Argentina, Hungary, Botswana
79. Turks & Caicos

There you have it. My final Miss Universe results. Now all I can do is just sit back and see how well I do. I was really looking forward to this year being a European and Asian year. It could be an Asian year but the Europeans were very disappointing this year. This year does not top the year where all the delegates were beautiful. 1998 was the best looking year. Beauties like Aruba, Argentina, Bonaire, Zimbabwe and many more were left out of the top 10. I am guessing because of Interview. When the majority of the delegates are strong, Interview is a very powerful deciding factor.
