Pink
Flamingo Award
Like its namesake, the Pink Flamingo Award has not been so prominent in
recent months. When it does return from migration though, it is with a
vengeance. Step forward to the podium please, Toronto City Councilor Sandra
Bussin and receive your pink flamingo that goes so well with the brand of
politics you practice. Liberal Member of Parliament Tom Wapple can land himself
in well-publicized hot water for refusing to help a constituent because the man
voted for his opponent in the last elections. Like- wise did John and Mary
Triantafillou hang signs for Ms. Bussin's opponent on their Danforth Ave.
property during the last municipal election. Worse still, they called Ms. Bussin
to have her signs taken off their fence, hung their by a new neighbor who has
been aggressively attempting, to have them remove a large maple well-loved by
the neighborhood that grows in their courtyard. Last year, the tree received
protection from the city .Indeed, earlier a city forester had declared the tree
to be in good health. Strangely, with a Bussin supporter taking umbrage to it,
the tree is suddenly declared by the city to be dying, according to the
Trantafillous. This couple have been over three decades on the Danforth and are
well-known there for their quiet and effective community support, as well as
raising a wonderful and hard working family. Last year, they gained 2,500
signatures on a petition to save their tree. Now they are starting allover
again. As we go to press, they have almost 4,000 signatures, and a pile of over
a thousand letters to Councilor Bussin. Three professional foresters and a
botany professor from the University of Toronto say the tree is not dying. The
community is enraged. And Ms. Bussin's response? According to John Triantafillou,
she has called him a "troublemaker" when she visited his tree-hating
neighbor. She has not responded to invitations to meet or done anything to
represent both sides. Wapple got his backside walloped for such action. Not so
the left-leaning Bussin who, one would suppose from her political shade, would
support trees. She may be reached at fax 416-392-7444, or write her at Toronto
