The Story of Baybee Ayleeyin
Is It A Dream

Late last night as I was looking out my bedroom window, I saw a bright green light in the sky. I have never seen anything like it before. At first it seemed to be falling toward the ground very fast. Then it stopped and just hung in the sky like a star. I did not want to blink my tired eyes. I thought I might miss something or lose sight of it. Without warning, it darted to the left, then to the right and the left again, falling slightly in a zigzag pattern. Then it fell again. This time it disappeared behind the hill across from my house. I expected to hear a loud crash, but none came. This made me think I was really tired and probably not fully awake. It must be a dream, or a hallucination. I was real tired. I did not have a hard time falling asleep. I had no further dreams that night.

The next morning my friend Darla and I were walking up the hill, as we did every Saturday morning. We often found beautiful rocks to add to our terrarium for Iggy, our Iguana. He liked the pinkish ones with the tiny glitters in them. Well we liked them, so we said he did too. I just found a white rock with lots of glitter and turned to ask Darla if she wanted to add this to Iggy’s terrarium. As I turned, Darla’s mouth was hanging open. She whispered, “Reesha, look. Shhh, don’t move, just look.” You will never believe what was next to the big saguaro…..

At first it looked like one of those Mylar balloons you buy at the super market. But wrapped in some shinny blanket was a chubby little green “Thing”. It wiggled and made soft singing sounds. It did not seem to be able to run from us. Actually, it did not even look scared.
Darla started to slowly move closer to it. Staying behind her, I grabbed her elbow and walked with her. As we got closer to it, it giggled. Yes, it giggled. We knelt on either side of it. It was early in the morning. The sun was not real hot yet. We knew we had to get this little guy indoors.
“Reesha, what do you think we should do with it?” Darla said.

I thought we should look around for other critters. “How did this little guy get here?” I said. Then I remembered the dream I had last night. As I told Darla about the dream, the little wiggling bundle began to sing softly again. The singing was like watching the movies where the mythological ladies sing in the background as the hero starts exploring a cave or something. There are no words, just real pretty sounds.
We check the entire hill. We look under rocks and around bushes for any clues. The whole time the baby is singing sweetly to us. “Look there Darla, near the Cholla, there is a pile of loose dirt.”

”I saw it already, Reesha”. Darla said. “It looks like the Javalinas were here. It’s a wonder that they did not hurt the little guy.” As I looked down into his big black eyes, I asked him, “What do we do with you, little munchkin?” Darla wondered, “Where did he come from?” “So many questions. Right now this little guy needs to be tended to.” I snapped.
Darla was more sure-footed than I was. I gave her the bundle to carry down the rocky hill. We brought the tiny fellow home in hopes of caring for his immediate needs. “What are the needs of a Baby Alien?” I though out loud. I guessed that was what we had here.
“Bay Bee Ay Lee Yin”, in a very slow, soft, high pitch, melodic tone was heard coming form the parcel Darla was holding. “The baby spoke”, Darla blared. “Yeh, I heard”, was all I could say. We both just stood there staring at this Baybee Ayleeyin with our mouths, rudely gaping. The baby started to giggle again.
This contagious little giggle had such an effect on us that we started to giggle along with him. He made you happy just to be near him.
When we finally stopped giggling, Darla asked, “What do we feed him?” With a puzzled look on my face, I followed her to the refrigerator. I supposed we were hoping the fridge would give us suggestions.
What would you feed a Baybee Ayleeyin?
