Narine Sooklal Death Row, State Prison 103 A Frederick Street Port of Spain Trinidad, West Indies ANTHONY GARCIA would appreciate recieving mail, please write to: Anthony Garcia Death Row State Prison,' 103a Frederick St, Port of spain, Tinidad, West Indies Eddie Johnson, known to his friends as EJ, is on death row in Texas for a crime he says he didn't commit. At the time of this crime he was 17 years old and a member of a gang. A gang expert stated in his trial that this is the type of crime that gang members commit, although even the public prosecutor's office said that it did not have anything to do with a gang. Although I do not know all of the facts about the murder that put EJ on death row, I do know that certain aspects of his trial were not fair. For example, EJ had three alibi witnesses that were with him at the time that this crime was commited that were never allowed to testify. There was neither a murder weapon, nor any physical evidence, which connected EJ with the crime. There are only the testimonies of two schoolmates of EJ, who got thier sentences reduced to testify against him. My question is this: EJ was gang member. In gangs there is a " code of silence ." If he planned a robbery and murder, why would he have chosen to do it with his schoolmates rather than with the gang? The schoolmates are the ones who implicated EJ in this crime. EJ states that his trial was very unfair, from the information I have seen, he is right. There was a daily newspaper found in the jury box at one tme during the trial. When the defense insisted that the jury was biased because of the newspaper, the judge asked the jurors who the paper belonged to and none admitted to bringing it in. The judge took the word of the jurors and continued with the trial. The most important appeal document for a death row inmate is the State Habeas Corpus. EJ's court appointed attorney made no attempt to visit EJ and did not respond to his letters. There are attorneys who submit up to 100 page Habeas Corpus Documents. EJ's Habeas was less than 10. It raised some good points, but did not give enough detail of each to even be considered by the court. EJ's appeal was rejected in June 2000. Since that time EJ is very depressed. He hardly speaks and does not always cooperate. EJ is not able at this time to maintain a conversation with anyone who could be of help to him due to this depression. EJ needs people who will offer friendship and support to him, even if they don't get back much in the way of a response . Right now, EJ's life consists of sitting on his bunk staring at his blanket.
