| ******************************************************************************** Today, Tuesday December 19th, I made a visit to Terrell to see Jack Clark. Jack is a very dear friend of mine who has a serious date for January 9th, 2001. When I arrived at the main gate security I told the guard I was there for a minister visit with Jack. She took my identification and gave me a volunteer badge. I have been given this badge before since I was kicked out as a volunteer chaplain and didn't think anything about it. In fact, many ministers and attorneys are given this same badge. After my visit with Jack I told the visitation room guard I needed to go to the chaplain's office to check on another inmate. I had been asked by a friend to check on someone who had not written in two months. She said ok, so I walked out of visitation and to the chaplain's office. He was not in so I immediately returned to visitation. Before I could leave Major Hester and another office came in and told me they needed to talk to me. I was first questioned how I got the volunteer badge. When I told them the guard at the gate gave it to me they asked if I had asked for it. Of course I had not and told them so. They asked if I used to be a volunteer and I said yes. Major Hester then told me to give him the badge, which I promptly did. Then they asked me about why I went to the chaplain's office. I explained to them that I had wanted to check on an inmate. I was then told that I was not allowed to leave the visitation room for any reason. I apologized for the incident and assured them it would not happen again. I walked to the main gate to leave and there was another officer waiting there. The guard who had given me the badge told me to stand to the side and wait there. The same officers who had questioned me in the visitation room came out and told me Warden Massey wanted to see me. I was escorted back inside and into the warden's office. Once again I was asked by the warden why I had the volunteers badge. I once again told him the same thing. Then he asked if I still had it. I told him the Major had taken it from me. The warden asked why I was there today and I told him of the visit to see Jack. I told him it was a minister visit and that the guard at the gate had been informed of that. Warden Massey then told me he was recommending to Warden Treon that my name be taken off all lists and that I not be allowed back on TDCJ property at all. I asked him if it was because of me going to the chaplain's office and he said yes. I told him I thought that was a little severe punishment for an honest mistake and he again said he was making the recommendation. I am now no longer allowed to visit the men at Terrell and am not sure if my mail will be allowed in. I know they are watching my mail and any contact I have there. In the past when these incidents have happened I have asked that people not write the prison. I am now asking for the help and support of my friends and anyone who knows me. I have three requests that I would like to make. 1-Anyone who visits or writes any inmate to please tell them exactly what has happened and ask them to spread the word to all the men they know. I am sure the guards will start rumors to make the men think bad of me and to try and cause people to not support my work. 2-Write, phone, e-mail, or fax the warden or any prison official, state official, or media contacts you have. We must let people know what is happening at Terrell in regards to those who are trying to help the inmates. 3-Post this message to as many lists as you are on or know of so people will know. It is not for my benefit but for the men who are now deprived of their contact with me and through me their contact with you. At this time I do not know what else the state will try to do to keep me quite but I feel this was probably a set up because of the article in USA Today and the other publicity I have gotten since speaking out about the prison system. They will stop at nothing to silence their critics. Jack told me a lot of the inmates had read the article and that many of the guards had seen it and were upset by it. I am sure the warden saw it as well. If any of you feel that because of my outspoken stance in these matters that you can not support this work, or if you wish to be removed from my mail list, I will understand. I am committed to seeing change made and will do whatever I can to help make it happen. I cannot be intimidated by the system and must see this through til the end. Because of their blatant disregard, Mr. Johnson is being denied full access to the courts. In an effort to STOP this, Mr. Johnson's attorney's are petitioning the Honorable Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas for a Certificate of Appealability. If this certificate is issued by Justice Thomas, the Missouri Federal Court will be REQUIRED to review his case and he will be given full access to the judicial process. FACT* - 3 of the top PTSD Specialists in the United States testified that Mr. Johnson was in "flashback" to Vietnam the night of the murders FACT* Dr. Shad Meshad, President and Psychiatrist of the National Veteran's Foundation is one such doctor. FACT* Dr. John Wilson who wrote the definition of PTSD for the DSMV-5, which is a diagnostic manual used by psychiatrists and other medical doctors for use in diagnosing their patients, was another such doctor. FACT* Dr. Harry Kormos, former Assistant Chief of psychiatry for the Veteran's Hospitals, Professor of Psychiatry at University of Berkley, Berkley CA, private practitioner is another such doctor. Mr. Johnson's PTSD defense is more than legal strategy! It is a MEDICAL FACT and if Missouri executes him they will be killing a very ill man! PLEASE get involved and write to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and ask him to issue the CERTIFICATE OF APPEALABILITY this man so desperately needs. But the "police monster" who allegedly killed a young man and his mother because they did not come up with the drug money he demanded is not in the dock; he is the chief prosecution witness, former police officer Rafael Perez. The suggestion that Perez, a corrupt officer who turned informer to escape a long sentence for stealing cocaine from a police locker, is also a murderer is the latest twist in a saga that has transfixed the city and seriously damaged police morale. The trial of four police officers accused of corruption, which started this week, is the first opportunity for the full story of police shootings, drug dealing, bribery and planting of evidence to be told in court. Perez's former girlfriend Sonia Flores claims that he has not told the whole story of his wrongdoing, although he has openly admitted taking part in the shooting of a gang member and planting drugs and weapons on criminals. She says that she was present when Perez and another officer, David Mack, tried to extract money from the young man and his mother in central Los Angeles. When the money was not forthcoming, Perez and Mack, who is serving a jail sentence for bank robbery, shot them, Ms Flores claims. They allegedly wrapped the bodies in carpet and drove them south of the border where a corrupt Mexican officer helped to dump them in a tip. A rubbish tip on a hillside outside Tijuana is due to be searched. If the bodies are found, it will seriously damage Perez's credibility, since he claims to have admitted all his crimes. The four officers from the Rampart division - Edward Ortiz, Brian Liddy, Paul Harper and Michael Buchanan - are accused of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice, perjury, and filing false reports. They are alleged to have planted evidence on a suspect or given false evidence in a 1996 case. The long process of selecting jurors for the trial has begun but the full opening statements will not be made until next week. "He [Perez] was no more than a street thug in a police uniform, the likes of which this city has never seen before," Barry Levin, for the defence, told 120 potential jurors in the superior court. "His coldness, his callousness, his evil knew no bounds," another defence lawyer, Harland Braun, told the jury panel. The trial is the first of many of alleged corrupt officers. It is expected to expose the way in which one of the police divisions in the city routinely beat up, shot, framed and exchanged drugs with gang members. Since Perez started making hisallegations, more than 100 criminal convictions have been overturned and more than 70 officers have been investigated. Millions of dollars have been paid out in compensation to those framed or wounded by police officers. Perez made his deal for a five-year sentence after being caught stealing nearly $1m worth of cocaine.
