| When there's 'No Escape', Just dance, Sing along and stage dive all over the place! |
| "Punk and ska and The Stone Roses just do not mix!" (No Escape) |
1. Can you give us some band history, including any previous members and what they're doing now?
We've had many members within the band, many of which never worked out, but the current line up has worked the best. I still see the old members but i don't know what's happening with them; there's no hard feelings between us.
2. What is the current line up?
Right now its; Alan: drums/vocals;
Jon: guitar/vocals;
Surgie: bass;
Skott: flugel horn.
We're also in the middle of finding a replacement trombonist (it's really hard to find one)
3. How did you come up with the name No Escape?
To be honest I don't really remember when the name was decided or who came up with it.
Over a few years ago at least!!
4. What other bands influence the music you play?
Main influences: Less Than Jake, Mad Caddies, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, NOFX...(the list goes on)
5. What is your favourite song / album of all time?
Man that's a hard one, obviously I can't speak for the rest of the band but I would say my favourite punk album is "No Control" by Bad Religion and my favourite ska album is "Why Do They Rock So Hard?" by Reel Big Fish. I think Alan's is "and so on..." by Longfellow, but don't quote me on that one.
6. What is your favourite song from your own set list and why?
I'd be lying if I said they we're all my favourite songs because I like some better than others. I'd say my favourite is the one me and Alan are finishing off the words to right now. The chord progression is pretty cool and we've already worked out some cool harmonising patterns for brass/octave chords.
7. Apart from punk / ska, what other music do you secretly like?
Alan loves AC/DC and Pantera and Metalica... I don't know what skott secretly listens to, probably the same as what we all listen to normally...... Surgie's kinda the same as Skott........ I like bands like Incubus and Deftones, and also a local band called
Biffy Clyro (everyone should go out and buy their new cd "thekidswhopoptodaywillrocktomorrow")
8. What music did you grow up listening to?
Not Punk and Ska I used to listen to G'n'R, Alan AC/DC, Skott I'm not sure, Surgie Metalica probably.
9. What's the most memorable gig you have ever played?
It's a cross between our best gig and our worst gig. Our best gig by far was Alan and AJ's birthday party, The crowd we're emense (I mean they were all our friends but they danced, sang along and stage dived all over the place) Our worst gig was in Greenock of all places, supporting a band called Korova, who were a Stone Roses style band. Punk and Ska and Stone Roses do not mix!!
10. Do you regard music as a vein through which to project your views, political or otherwise, or is it an issue of money and given the chance you would "sellout" like The offspring and Green day have?
My views are that I have no problems with bands like Green Day, Blink-182 and Offspring, who have "sold out" by becoming commercial, because even though they are making a hell of a lot of money out of it, they are not taking any money from the bands who stay true to the no "selling out" rule. It's fine if they are in it for the money because the rest of the underground movement are in it for the fun and enjoyment of playing an instrument in a band who may be popular with a group of people, and if they are getting money it's cool to them but it's not as satisfying as playing for the fun of it.
11. What advice would you give to any up and coming bands?
Stick in there if you're having fun, but if you stop having fun playing in the band then quit, don't keep playing something you don't like. You may not get very far in the band but at least you will experience something many people don't get the chance to.
12. Any final comments?
Our new Ep is nearly finished look out for it (tentative title: "Sending Out For Sushi")
