The ABC's of Prenatal Diagnosis by Keith Wexler, Laurie Wexler

At no other time in our lives does the responsibility for getting answers to our questions weigh so heavily as when we undertake the decision to bear or adopt a child. The responsibility to give your child the best start and the greatest opportunities carries over from early childhood into adulthood. As an obstetrician-gynecologist for more than 25 years, my enthusiasm for answering many of the same questions over and over again never dampened since each patient or couple demonstrated the same enthusiasm for the answers. This search for answers led Laurie and Keith to read as much as they could digest and then ask for input from their parents, friends and health care providers. Keith and Laurie were suprised to learn of the great diversity of care and sharing of information which occurred with different health care providers. They felt committed to getting the information out about new technology available to couples today. Not all of these advances have been positive as often the technology raises more questions than it answers. Yet, despite these limitations, Keith and Laurie felt that as consumers of health care and prospective parents they were entitled to have the information. Often, the health care giver feels the need to filter the information given to the patient to achieve a preconceived goal. With the explosion of information, particularly medical information, a plan to restrict access to information even if for a "loftier" goal will invariably lead to continued distrust of the healthcare provider. As health care providers, we should accept the challenge to get answers for our patients and ourselves. The medical editing of the information has been done with great care to avoid diluting the information with unnecessary medical detail, yet attempting to assure the accuracy. The foreword sets forth that there are no correct answers to the questioned asked, only opinions. These opinions can be used to gather information from your health care giver. Thus, the responsibility for deciding to start or raise a family can be shared with the professionals committed to similar goals. Such shared responsibility should lighten the "burden of childbearing" and change into the exciting miracle of birth and child rearing that a Haylee Erin in your life should be - Paul Wexler, M.D.

The Childbirth Kit : Ideas and Images to Help You Through Labor by Marie Fellenstein Hale, Liz Chalmers (Contributor)

An innovative tool for parents and childbirth professionals.

The Childbirth Kit consists of a book describing a wide range of natural childbirth techniques, a set of 17 full-color image cards, and a Waiting Days calendar. The cards are designed to be used during labor. Each card is designed for a specific phase of labor, and has an inspiring or focussing image on one side, and a visualization and set of tips on the other. The Waiting Days calendar is a motivational tool for mothers-to-be to use in the couple of weeks around their due date as they wait anxiously for the baby to arrive. The kit makes a wonderful baby shower gift. For more information, please take a look at our web site..

This "kit" is unique and creative - it's a collection of 17 beautiful and symbolic cards that a woman in labor and her support team can use for visualization and imagery. The back of each card outlines suggested techniques for relaxing and relieving pain such as breathing, positions, activity and massage/touch suggestions. The kit also includes an informative book of ideas, suggestions and resources for birthing women. This kit is unique and an excellent tool for any birthing woman. It will help her find her own path and reinforce her strengths and coping techniques as she welcomes a baby into her life.

The information in the book is a helpful addition to your childbirth class series as it does not favor any particular method, encouraging the mother to find her best coping techniques in labor. The cards will help the novice coach to feel more at ease because they can aid in remembering points learned in class. The cards offer a focal point for mothers who wish to keep their eyes open during labor, and because the tips and visualizations are printed right on the back, the coach can read them while the mother looks at them. Certainly, the relaxation, imagery, and labor tips on the cards will be helpful to the coach even if the mother has her eyes closed.

Boy or Girl? : 50 Fun Ways to Find Out by Shelly Lavigne, Penny Carter (Illustrator)

Includes games to play at a baby shower, a gift plate that can be personalized by the giver, and the Chinese Conception Chart.

Your Pregnancy : Week by Week (Your Pregnancy Series) by Glade B. Curtis (Illustrator)

When you're pregnant, there is nothing more exciting than keeping up with the drastic changes your body undergoes on a weekly basis. In Your Pregnancy Week by Week, Glade B. Curtis, M.D. (Your Pregnancy Questions and Answers, Your Pregnancy After Thirty) has written a clear, easy to follow guidebook. Each "week" includes information on: How Big Is Your Baby?, How Big Are You?, How Your Baby Is Growing and Developing, Changes in You, How Your Actions Affect Your Baby's Development, You Should Also Know, and a Tip of the Week. With the exception of the You Should Also Know sections (which sometimes focus on rare problems and concerns), the tone of the book is informative, chatty and reassuring. An extensive, excellent glossary adds value. Your Pregnancy Week by Week seems intended to both simplify and expand on the information an inexperienced or first-time mother-to-be receives from her medical provider. It is especially ideal for very young pregnant women seeking to better understand the changes in their bodies. --Ericka Lutz
