Penguin Book of Hindu Names by Maneka Gandhi
Reviewer: http://www.yourbabysname.com (see more about me) from Chennai, Tamilnadu, India
If anybody asks me to recommend a book on Hindu names and meanings, I would first recommend this. You are sure to name your baby after going through this book. Each name has almost all the meanings it has. The author-Maneka Gandhi-a Minister in the central government(India) now, and daughter-in-law of ex-prime minister of India, Indira Gandhi has access to Vedas and read the Mahabharata, the Ramayana, the Kathasaritsagara, the Panchatantra, the listings of all Vedas and Upanishads. This probably made her list all Hindu names, their source, gender and the meaning. Meanings are many, all are listed and the source of the name is explained in detail. For example, "Sakuntla" means a bird or protected by birds. Sakuntala is teh daughter of Menaka & Viswamitra. She was adopted by sage Kanva. Since the girl was protected by birds, she was called Sakuntala. She married king Dushyanta of the Lunar Dynasty and became the mother of the Emperor Bharata, after whose name India is called Bharat . 85% of Hindus in India (out of 100 billions) and Hindus outside India will definitely benefit out of this rich resource. It is an encyclopaedia not just a book.

A terrific place to start the "Great Name Hunt."
Reviewer: R. Curtis from Citrus Heights, California February 1, 1999

When it came time to pick a name for Junior, Junior just wasn't right. I wasn't looking forward to just going through lists of names to pick one out. Fortunately I found "Baby Names, A New Generation." I actually had fun. This book is not just a list. (Check out"Beam Me Up Pr'zylla") It made the search for just the right name a pleasure, not a chore. I recommend it highly!

This book helps fiction writers name characters, too.
Reviewer: A reader from San Francisco, CA January 20, 1999

As a writer of short stories, I'm always searching for names that suit my characters. Ms. Turner's guidelines for naming babies works just as well for naming characters so the reader can see and understand them more quickly. I also found "Baby Names for the 90's" worked well for me by organizing names as "tailored" or "cross-gender." Good reading and a timesaver for writers.

Here's where to find the meaning and history of any name!
Reviewer: A reader from Sacramento, California January 13, 1999

I really appreciate the history behind the names. It's great to find the meaning of the name, sometimes multiple meanings from different countries. I found the pronounciation guide especially helpfull.

Baby Names : Real Names With Real Meanings for African Children by Tyra Mason, Sam Chekwas~

Baby Names for the '90s and Beyond by Barbarakay Turner, Barbara Kay Turner

Baby names chosen during the last decade of the twentieth century mark a period of great change in naming patterns. Baby Names for the '90s & Beyond examines and predicts the effects of some of these changes, based on a thorough search and analysis of birth registration records from across the country. I was happy to include the special feature of ranking names by frequency of usage. Parents can use this feature in various ways. For example, you can see at a glance (in the index) which spelling variation of a classic name is most popular, and which is the most unusual. This feature also helps prevent spelling problems. Misspelling names on a birth certificate occurs much more often than you might think! I recommend that you read Baby Names for the '90s & Beyond to see how many of its predictions about naming trends have already proved true, and to find those that point even farther ahead --- to the Beyond of the next century!.

Paula Samuelson's Baby Names for the New Century offers a wide variety of names from around the world, providing a global focus that puts Nanymka from Ghana next to Nana from Hawaii and Nancy from the Hebrew. While sticking to mainly short descriptions (such as "master of his domain" for Henry), Samuelson does include a vast data bank at the end of the book which breaks names into thematically focused categories, including sports, literature, movies and television, aeronautics, and nature. What's more, each category associates names with famous people throughout history, allowing parents to bet on whether history can actually repeat itself.

Complete Book of Muslim and Parsi Names by Maneka Gandhi, Ozair Husain
Reviewer: http://www.yourbabysname.com (see more about me) from Chennai, Tamilnadu, India, Asia
The book starts with a neat introduction beginning with the name of Muhammad meaning "one who is praised". Muhammad is the most common Muslim name. Prophet Muhammad is supposed to have said "Whoever is named after me with the hope of being blessed, he will be blessed and will be in peace till the Day of Qayamat". Then other names like Abdu'llah (the servant of Allah), Adhu'r Rahman (servant of the merciful one) are explained. The introduction closes with thanking those helped the authors in providing research material and guidance.

Phonetic Guide is followed by Introduction. This page explains how to spell, for example A is spelled as in mud, K as in king, Q as in stuck, U as in put, etc.

Origin of names are explained the next topic - Abbreviations. This page has the origin of names like A for Arabic, Hb for Hebrew and P for Persian.

Then the names and meanings are listed alphabetically. However you will not find names staring with "O". For names with O you will have to see "U". Each name has its source and almost all the meanings. An interested and speciality of this book is that the Actual Meaning, the Construed Meaning and those connected to History or Mythology are indicated. This makes the book different from others. The book ends with Bibliography.

Male and Female names are neither indicated nor separated, causing little inconvenience to the readers. For all names beginning with "O" you must see under "U". This is another inconvenience.

Finally I am sure to say, "The Complete Book of Muslim & Parsi Names by Maneka Gandhi & Ozair Husain" is THE BEST Muslim names book.

The Last Word on First Names : The Definitive A-Z Guide to the Best and Worst in Baby Names by America's Leading Experts by Linda Rosenkrantz, Pamela Satran (Contributor)

Baby name experts Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran's The Last Word on First Names attempts to capture the best baby names of the '90s, with an emphasis on defining what's hip in baby names at this moment and why. While maintaining a focus on the up-to-the-minute popularity of particular names--Dolly is too cutesy for the postfeminist age, for example--the book doesn't skimp on the historical background of each name presented. For parents looking to find out how Richard has changed through the ages--once favored by kings, the name peaked in popularity in the '50s and now returns to favor--The Last Word on First Names is the baby name book to buy. --

Unusual & Most Popular Baby Names by Cleveland Kent Evans (Contributor)

An entertaining guide to popular baby names lists and ranks some one thousand of America's favorite names, along with information on the origins and meanings of boys and girls names, nicknames and variations, and information on famous name holders. --

A Dictionary of Muslim Name

Excellent reference for the new muslim parent.
Reviewer: Muarrij Ahmad (MuarrijAhmad@dc7.com) from London , UK September 29, 1998

The comprehensive and authentic approach offered by this book is unparallel to any other that I have seen. Full marks go to the author, who has included many Quranic/Arabic/Persian muslim names for both boys and girls. This book is a must if you are a new parent, and consequently pulling your hair out trying to think of a suitable muslim name for your newborn. Further reference to the meaning of these names make this text a good read even for the general public. Do you know what your name means? Certainly a book to be passed on with inhertance! --

Bible Names for Your Baby
Bible Names for your Baby was quite a blessing. It helped my husband and I pick out the perfect biblical name for our beautiful new son. The book was very nicely organized, and it was extremely easy to understand. We really liked the book because instead of just listing column after column of names and meanings; the book gave you detailed information on the name and the person that possessed it. This book truly was a blessing and made at least one part of my pregnancy easy.

A Concise Dictionary of First Names
This is a wonderful book, lively and enthusiastic. Unlike other name guides, it focuses on the cultural and linguistic roots of the name, rather than the fluffily mystic (astrological and so forth.) In addition to the original meaning of the name and variations over time, it also lists prominent historical or mythological bearers of the name, such as saints, kings, or heroes. The appendices, with names and their original meanings from Russian, Arabic, French, German, and so forth, are an added bonus. If you like words, or just like to peek at the secret roots of everyday things, buy this book. Great fun.

The Book of Names
This book is a collection of every remotely normal name in the Bible with its meaning. It also has names of important Christian figures and a list of non-biblical popular names with appropriate scripture refernces. It's interesting for finding out more about a name and is easy to skim through for inspiration for a name with meaning for your baby.
