Plymouth Prowler
The 1997 Plymouth Prowler represents the general direction in which the Chrysler Corporation is heading into: the building of sleek, stylish cars that people want to buy. The Prowler continues Chrysler's bold and unique style of car design which was started by the extravagant Dodge Viper. The Prowler is also the subject of Chrysler's experimentation with aluminum body frames to chase after the many advantages of a lighter chassis while still making a car which is durable enough for everyday use. The body and frame of the Prowler are 98% aluminum, amassing one-third of the 2862-pound curb weight, and are held together by 100 feet of welds on the aluminum extrusions, bonded rivets, and an application of adhesive. Using this new combination of methods to construct the body and frame, the body stiffness was increased by an estimated 40%. The only things this car are really lacking are a true manual transmission and some extra horsepower. Chrysler's Autostick System may make driving a manual easier, with the elimination of a clutch, but it doesn't do this car justice. The Autostick System is also designed to make an automatic behave more like a manual, but in the process it reduces manual 'mode' to tapping left for upshifting and right for downshifting. The Prowler could also do with a shot of horsepower. The 214 horsepower produced by the same 3.5-liter V-6 used in Chrysler's LH models just isn't enough for a car who's looks scream 'Drive me!'.
