| Mike Walter for Mayor |
 |
| Let's Bring Auburn Back to Auburn! |
Auburn is a special place. It's home. It's where I learned about democracy and fair play. It was never perfect. It never will be. But as hometowns go, it was pretty good. Whatever I am, I became that here. Whatever shaped me did it here.
There have always been two Auburns: one, materialistic and all business; the other, more circumspect, more generous, more warm-hearted. My parents were part of that "Other Auburn," and I like to think that I am, too. I'm the kind of person whose eyes get moist when he sees a robin's nest fallen from its tree, a softie of sorts. But I'm also the kind of person whose field of vision gets very red when he sees injustice or sees greed prevail over the public good.
I was shaped by the Methodist Church, Scouting, 4-H and Walt Disney...and by John F. Kennedy, the Cold War and the Civil Rights Era. I was raised to believe that politics is the highest form of public service and that the purpose of politics is to seek justice.
I am temperamentally conservative. I do not like to rush into things. I am cautious. I like to touch all the bases. "Travel slowly, travel safely," has always seemed like good advice to me. I do not fully trust anyone who can talk faster than I can think.
Philosophically, I'm an activist. I share with the Founders of our Republic a distrust of unchecked concentrations of power. I think the proper role of government is to countervail against such concentrations; to throw the weight of authority into the balance on behalf of those who have no weight. I believe in the active pursuit of fairness.
What does this mean for Auburn if you elect me your Mayor?
1. It means the door to City Hall will be open.
2. It means an end to government by nasty surprise.
3. It means that public meetings will be conducted with the purpose of inviting debate, not surpressing it.
4. It means demanding accountability from those who seek governmental goodies like tax abatement.
5. It means getting less advice from consultants and more advice from citizens.
6. It means you can talk me out of a bad idea.
7. It means a greener Auburn.
A very kind man once told me that Auburn is full of first-rate people who settle for second-best.
We have settled for second-best for too long. I offer you the challenge of becoming the best that our joint efforts, matched to reason and principle, can make us.
