Kofi Annan, Secretary-General, United Nations
a splendid example of how the universal language of art can cross boundaries and barriers, bringing nations together to promote greater understanding among peoples and cultures.
HRH The Prince of Wales - Charlie to you and me!
We can all learn a great deal about our world by looking at it through the independent and perceptive eyes of artists.
Our World in the year 2000 features winning and selected paintings from The Winsor & Newton Worldwide Millennium Painting Competition, which attracted over 22,000 entries from amateur and professional artists from 51 countries. It is the largest art event of its kind ever held. The international judging for the competition and awards ceremony for the winning artists from around the world were carried out under the patronage of HRH The Prince of Wales at St Jamess palace, London.
The UN Secretary-General, who is Patron of this exhibition, has selected it as the official United Nations Millennium Art Exhibition. Both the Secretary-General and HRH The Prince of Wales, together with Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of UNICEF, have contributed Forwards to the exhibition catalogue, which will be sold at the United Nations in aid of UNICEF.
The overall winner of the competition was Ramon Piaguaje, a Secoya Indian artist from the Amazon rainforest in Ecuador.

Some Greeks Some Romans The River Slaney 2000
The Slaney rises in the Wicklow foothills under the north-west side of Lugnaquilla and meanders parallel with the coastline, through Baltinglass by its famous ruined Abbey, through Bunclody and Enniscorty to join the sea at Wexford harbour.
Many of the famous battles associated with the 1798 Rising took place on the banks of the Slaney. The river mouth is also well known as a slops or bird sanctuary of international appeal.
The image which I have painted is from one of a series of 14 River Gods commissioned by the famous architect James Gandon (1743-1823) from Edward Smyth, a virtually unknown sculptor who worked on them from 1780 to their completion in 1786, for the Custom House in Dublin.
The sculptures can be seen to this day on the outside of the building, over 200 years later. Not bad eh?

Arts & Culture
Dublin Artist Roger Cummiskey will exhibit at the United Nations Building in
New York after representing Ireland in "Our World in the Year 2000" as a
result of a World-wide Millennium Art Competition organised by Winsor & Newton.
Roger, from Blackrock, Co Dublin, was selected to represent Ireland in the
prestigious Millennium event and this week his painting of the River Slaney,
one of the River Gods which feature on Dublin's Custom House, will go on
exhibition at London's Mall Galleries in aid of the Princes' Foundation.
Next month the painting will be part of a touring exhibition going to the
World Trade Centre, Stockholm, Sweden and Roger will travel to New York
where his painting will represent Ireland at the exhibition in the United
Nations Building, in aid of UNICEF.
More than 22,000 amateur and professional artists across the globe submitted
paintings. 51 countries took part and five winners were chosen to represent
their country at the international judging. The overall winning painting was by Ramon Piaguaje, a Socoya Indian from the rainforest in Equador. Second place went to Stanislaw Zoladz from Sweden.
Roger, after taking early retirement, has become a full time painter. He is
primarily a watercolourist.
Roger's involvement in the Arts spans a lifetime and has included Board
membership of Eucrea Ireland Ltd, the European Communities' efforts to
include participation in the arts by and with people with disabilities.
He was also involved for many years with Very Special Arts Ireland and
Europe. VSA is the charity founded by former US Ambassador to Ireland, Jean
Kennedy Smith, in 1975.
"The River Slaney" was chosen to represent Ireland after his exhibition
"Some Greek Some Romans" which was his interpretation of the River Gods of
Ireland commissioned in 1780 by James Gandon for the Custom House in Dublin.
Roger is a keen Joycean. His most recent exhibition "A Stroll Thro'
Ulysses" was held at the Bank of Ireland Arts Centre in Dublin and consisted
of over 50 watercolour paintings depicting his interpretation of the
writings and wanderings of James Joyce.
"I take inspiration not only from Ulysses but also Finnegans Wake, A
Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners."
