I am Matt Ketchum. My mom, Misty, and I live alone in a big house in
Pallet Town. My dad, Ash, is a world famous pokemon master! He’s
beaten just about every trainer out there, and has caught TONS of pokemon. But today,
I'm taking a step towards becoming a world famous pokemon master, and completing
my ultimate goal.... beating my dad in an official pokemon match!
Sure, I beat him lots of times when I was younger, but
that was only when he let me use his Charizard against his Vileplume (and other battles
like that), but I want to beat him in a match with my best pokemon against his best.
Anyway, I'm ten, and that means that I can officially receive my
pokemon trainer's license! Today my best friend (Katie Gottall), the
meanest kid in town (Michael Oak), and I will officially become pokemon
trainers, and receive our starting pokemon.
“Buuuzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!” my alarm clock screeched. I ran across the
room to turn it off. It hadn't awaken me, I'd already been up for
hours, too excited to sleep. To pass the time, I tried to decide which
pokemon I would choose. My dad's main pokemon is Pikachu, and electric pokemon,
and electric pokemon are weak against: grass, electric, ground, rock, and
dragon pokemon. Dragon pokemon were out of the question since both Mike
and Katie wanted one. I glanced over my other options, and narrowed it down
to Bulbasaur and Sandshrew. I finally chose Bulbasaur because in last
months issue of Pokemon Power, a whole bunch of Sandshrew were said to
have been spotted outside of Cerulean City.
I quickly got dressed, picked up the backpack that I had packed the
night before, and went downstairs. I walked to my place at the kitchen
table and sat down in front of a heaping plate of waffles. I peered across
the table at my mom sipping her orange juice. A small tear rolled down
her cheek. “Mom, why are you crying?” I asked.
“I'm crying because my little Matt is all grown up, and is leaving me
all alone in this big house,” she replied as another tear rolled out
from the corner of her eye. She smiled.
“Mom, don't make me feel so guilty, besides, I'm not leaving you all
alone,” I said, gesturing towards the pond that was visible through our
sliding glass door. Mom got up, walked to the sliding glass door, opened it, and said,
“Matt, follow me.” She stepped out the door and led me down to the
pond. “You know that all of the pokemon in our pond are the pokemon
that I own, am I right Matt?”
“Uh-huh,” I replied.
“Horsea, Horsea,” Horsea cried as she poked her head up from out of
the water.
“Psy-y-y,” Psyduck replied as he and Farfetch’d peeked out from
behind the cattails.
“Well,” mom started while smiling, “I would like you to pick out your
favorite pokemon here and you can have it, and while you're deciding,
pick one out for Katie and Michael.”
“But mom, Mike is so obnoxious! Do I have to give one of your
precious pokemon to him?” I whined.
“Of course, it wouldn't be fair to give one to Katie and not him, so
please choose, and choose fast, or you'll be late!” she replied.
“I already know who I want,” I said. “I'd like Farfetch’d. Katie's
easy too. She's always fancied that Poliwag, so she'll like him, but
who should I get Mike?” My eyes directly darted towards Magikarp, but I
knew that Magikarp's evolved form, Gyrados, was really powerful. My
eyes then went to Psyduck, but I knew from experience that Psyduck is
powerful if his headache gets bad. I looked over my other options. “Goldeen,” I
said. “I think that he'd like a Goldeen.”
“Okay,” she replied. “Poliwag, Farfetch’d, Goldeen, into your
pokeballs!” Mom held out three small red and white pokeballs. All of a
sudden a little red light shot out, hit Farfetch’d, Goldeen, and
Poliwag, then quickly pulled them into the open pokeballs. “Now go eat
your breakfast before it gets cold.” She handed me the pokeballs and walked inside the
house. I followed her in as I snapped the pokeballs on my belt, sat
back down at the table, and quickly finished off my waffles. I picked
up my bag, and went over to my mom. “Matt, promise me that you'll be
careful,” she said.
“I promise,” I replied while giving her a big hug.
“I love you,” she said, giving me a kiss.
“I love you too, but I have to go now,” I replied. I turned around and
walked to my front door.
“Remember to call and write!” mom shouted after me.
“I will,” I yelled back as I stepped out my front door, and my pokemon
adventure began.
Chapter 2:

I ran as fast as I could towards Professor Oak the II’s laboratory.
When I got there, I saw Mike and Katie sitting on the front porch
waiting for Professor Oak to let them in. “Better late than never,”
Mike snickered.
“Matt, who's in the pokeballs?” Katie asked.
“Presents for you two,” I said as I took the pokeballs containing
Goldeen and Poliwag off my belt, and handed them to Mike and Katie.
“Who's in them?” Mike asked.
“There's only one way to find out,” Katie replied. “Pokeball go!”
Katie threw down her pokeball and out popped Poliwag. “Ohmigosh! It's
Poliwag! Thank you! Thank you so much!”
“Don't thank me, thank my mom,” I responded.
“Pokeball go!” Mike yelled as he threw his pokeball to the ground.
“Goldeen-deen-deen,” Goldeen cried as she emerged from her
pokeball, flopping on the front porch.
“Thanks!” Mike said happily. “Which pokemon did you choose?”
“Farfetch’d,” I answered proudly.
“Farfetch’d?” he asked. “What a lame pokemon! It doesn't even
evolve! And Poliwag, after it evolves into Poliwhirl, you have to pay a
lot of money for a water stone so you can evolve Poliwhirl into
Poliwrath! I got the best of the three! Goldeen just evolves into a Seaking, and
then she's done! Goldeen return!” Mike held out his pokeball, the red light shot
out, and once again Goldeen was in her pokeball. Mike snapped the pokeball
on his belt.
“Poliwag return!” Katie called. Poliwag went back in his pokeball, and
Katie placed his pokeball in her knapsack.
“It doesn't matter if Farfe....,” I started, but was cut off when
Professor Oak opened the front door.
“Splendid! Everyone's right on time!” he exclaimed. “Come in, Come
in.” He led us through the hallway to a room in the back. He gestured
for us to sit down, so we did. “As you know, much has changed since
your parents were trainers. New gyms have been established, new pokemon have
been discovered, etc. Today, you will embark on a journey. A journey to
collect all of the pokemon league badges and beat the Elite Six. I will
admit that sometimes it will be tough, but I believe that you will all pull
through. Now you will select your starting pokemon. You may select any
basic pokemon from the original one hundred and fifty pokemon except.....,” he pressed
a button and a screen came on, flashing pictures of different pokemon.
“Mewtwo, Snorlax, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, and the extinct: Kabuto,
Omanyte, Lapras, Shellder, and Aerodactyl.”
“I guess that means that Dragonite and my other top ten choices are
out,” Mike complained.“Now who's first?” Professor Oak asked while turning towards his
PokePC. We all sprang up and ran as fast as we could towards Professor
Oak and his PokePC. I got there first. Katie was closing in on second
when all of a sudden Mike stuck out his foot. Katie tripped, and hit
the floor hard. I ran over to help her up, but by the time we got up and
back in line, Mike was spinning a pokeball on top of his finger.
“While you two losers were sitting on the floor, I was busy picking out
the best starting pokemon,” he snickered.
“Which lame pokemon did you choose,” Katie asked.
“That's for me to know, and you to find out,” he responded as he
walked down the hall towards the front door.
“Now who's next?” Professor Oak asked cheerfully.
“Go ahead Katie,” I said. “Get your Dratini.”
“I am,” Katie said to Professor Oak.
“Splendid! Now which pokemon would you like?” he asked.
“Dratini!” Katie replied happily.
“I'm sorry Katie, but that's the pokemon that my grandson selected,”
he apologized.
“That jerk!” Katie screamed. “He knew that Dratini was the pokemon
that I wanted, and he picked it anyway! I'm going to kill him!”
“Katie calm down!” I told her. “Didn't you have a second choice?”
“No, I was so sure that I was going to get Dratini, that I didn't even
bother to think of a second choice,” she responded.
“Is there another type of pokemon that you enjoy, or interests you?”
Professor Oak asked.
“Well....,” Katie started. “I guess a fire type pokemon would come in
handy.”
“I have Charmander, Growlithe, Vulpix, Ponyta, Magmar, and an
Eevee that will evolve into a Flareon when you expose it to a fire
stone,” he stated. Katie thought for a minute.
“Ponyta,” Katie said. “I'd like Ponyta.” Professor Oak typed a few
words into his PokePC, there was a whirring sound, and then a pokeball
popped out of a circular hole on the side of the PokePC.
“Now here's your Ponyta, she's a very energetic pokemon, but I'm
sure that you'll be the perfect trainer for her. Matt, your turn.”
“I'm going to have to go with Bulbasaur!” I exclaimed excitedly.
“How creative,” Katie teased.
“Be quiet,” I shot back. Like before, Professor Oak typed, then came
that whirring sound, and then out popped a pokeball, this time,
containing my new Bulbasaur.
“Here you go,” Professor Oak said, handing me the pokeball.
“Thank you so much!” I exclaimed as Katie and I started to walk down
the hall towards the front door.
“Wait!” Professor Oak yelled as he ran down the hall after us. “You
forgot these,” he said, holding out ten pokeballs and two pokedexes.
“Ohmigosh! I cant believe we almost left without these,” Katie said
as we each took a pokedex and five pokeballs. “Thanks again.”
“Your welcome,” he replied. “Oh, I almost forgot to tell you about
the catch with the pokeballs!”
“Huh?” Katie wondered.
“Catch?” I asked.
“Yes, a catch,” he answered. “Out of the five of them: three are
regular old original pokeballs, one of them is a great ball, a pokeball
that has a better chance of catching a pokemon than a regular pokeball,
and the last pokeball is a master ball, a pokeball that can catch any pokemon at
any time, even if the pokemon is at full strength.”
“Whoa,” Katie and I both said together in awe.
“The only thing is, I'm not telling you which one's which, but
programmed the pokeballs to tell you, once the pokemon is successfully
caught.” Katie and I both moaned. “Now run along, both of you. I want
to hear good news from the two of you as soon as possible.” We both
thanked Professor Oak again as we walked out the front door, and into
Mike, with both of his pokemon ready to battle!
Chapter 3:

“You creep!” Katie yelled at Mike. “You stole my Dratini!”
“I didn't see your name on it!” Mike shot back. “I challenge both of
you to a two on one match! What do you say?”
“We accept!” I answered.
“Let me go first,” Katie said. “Ponyta go!” Katie shouted as she threw
down Ponyta's pokeball. Out came Ponyta looking beautiful with her
flaming tail and mane blowing in the slight breeze.
“This should be easy,” Mike said as he threw down a pokeball.
“Goldeen go!” Goldeen came out of her pokeball, flopping on the ground.
“Goldeen, Horn Attack!” Goldeen flew at Ponyta, sticking her horn into
Ponyta's side. Ponyta whinnied in pain.
“What are Ponyta's attacks?” Katie asked me.
“I'm not sure,” I replied. “Check your pokedex.”
“Goldeen, Tail Whip!” Mike yelled. Goldeen launched herself at
Ponyta, then started slapping her in the face with her tail.
“Deen-deen,” Goldeen shouted with pride.
“Pokedex, tell me Ponyta's attacks,” Katie said to her pokedex as she
flipped it open.
“Ponyta's attacks: number one, ember,” Katie's pokedex said in a
robotic voice. “Number two, stomp. Number three, tail whip. Number
four, growl. Number five, agility. Number six.....”
“Ponyta, Ember attack!” Katie yelled. Ponyta started spinning around
in a circle, with embers from her mane and tail flying off and hitting
Goldeen, but Goldeen didn't even seem the least bit in pain. “Ponyta,
give Goldeen a Tail Whip!” Ponyta whipped her fiery tail in Goldeen's
face. Goldeen jumped back in pain.
“Goldeen, Ponyta's growing weak! Finish her off with your Water
Gun attack!” Mike yelled. Goldeen opened her mouth, and a thick jet
stream of water came pouring out. Ponyta bucked and whimpered in pain
when the icy water connected with her fiery mane, and almost put it
out. “I'm going to win this!” Mike shouted victoriously.
“I don't think so!” Katie replied. “Ponyta return! Poliwag, I choose
you!”
“Poliiiiiwaaaaag!” Poliwag shouted as he emerged from his pokeball. “Poliwag, use your Bubble attack!” Katie shouted. Poliwag blew out a
rushing wave of bubbles that exploded on Goldeen, leaving hundreds of
tiny splashes of water where they had been.
“Goldeen, give Poliwag a taste of your horn attack!” Mike demanded.
“Poliwag, use your hypnosis to put Goldeen to sleep!” Katie shouted.
But before Poliwag could unleash his hypnosis on Goldeen, Goldeen lodged
her horn in Poliwag's chest, then removed it, leaving a bloody gash
where her horn had been.
“Pooooolllll!” Poliwag screamed in agony. Poliwag, trying as hard as
he could, just couldn't complete his hypnosis attack with the gash in his
chest.
“Oh no! Poliwag,” I gasped as Goldeen gave Poliwag another horn
attack to his chest.
“Just hang in there Poliwag!” Katie comforted. “Give her your
doubleslap attack!” Poliwag sprang into action, slapping Goldeen back and
forth across her face.
“Goldeen, slow Poliwag down with your bubble attack!” Mike
commanded. Goldeen blew hundreds of bubbles straight at Poliwag! If those
bubbles hit Poliwag, he would faint, and Katie would lose! I covered my
eyes. I couldn't look, so I just waited for Mike's shout of victory.....

Chapter 4:

But neither came. Instead, I heard Professor Oak come out the front
door, pick up Poliwag, and scold Katie and Mike for not recalling their
pokemon when they were in so much pain. With a sigh, Professor Oak shook
his head, returned Poliwag, and went back inside. “Boy, are you guys
lucky,” Mike sneered.
“Oh, and why is that?” Katie asked.
“Oh, come on! You know that if “Professor Senior Citizen” in there
hadn’t come out when he did, you would have been toast. And you’re pretty
lucky too Matt. If you had gotten a taste of my Dratini, she would’ve kicked
the snot out of your lame-o pokewimps! Goldeen, come on, we have better
trainers to beat,” Mike said as he made Goldeen return to her pokeball,
hopped on his bike, and rode away.
“So what do we do now?” Katie asked.
“I don’t know. Maybe we should head over to the Pallet Town
Pokemon Center to heal your pokemon?” I suggested.
“Then maybe we can head over to the Pallet Town gym,” Katie added.
“I heard that the gym leader, Samurai, trains bug pokemon, and that he has a
Pinsir and a Metapod.”
“Or, we could try and catch some new pokemon to help us beat
Samurai, and win a Chrysalis Badge?” I asked.
“That too,” Katie said as she dragged me down the street to the Pallet
Town Pokemon Center.
Chapter 5:

“I’d like to have my pokemon healed,” Katie said to a nurse standing
behind the counter.
“Right away,” the nurse said in her sweet voice. “Oh, feel free to take
a rare candy for each of your pokemon.” I picked up two rare candies, and
stuck them in my bag for later. Katie and I went over to a row of chairs and
sat down. We bent over to pick out something to read from the stack of
magazines and kid’s books.
“Ohmigosh,” Katie cried while picking something up from the pile.
“This was my favorite book when I was little!” I looked at the title: Clefairy
Goes to the City. I sighed and continued my search. I picked up the latest
issue of Pokemon Power. I flipped through the pages to the “You Won’t
Believe That This Pokemon Was Spotted Outside Your Town” section. I
scanned the page for the Pallet Town column. I found it, and read down the
list: Pidgey, Rattata, Spearow, Nidoran (Male and Female), Magikarp,
Tentacool, Psyduck..... nothing out of the ordinary. Then I saw them, at the
bottom of the list: Eevee, Electabuzz, and Bellsprout!
“Wow!” I exclaimed.
“What is it?” Katie asked.
“You won’t believe it! There have been sightings of Bellsprouts,
Eevees, and Electabuzzes outside of Pallet Town!”
“Whoa, Bellsprout and Eevee, those are two really cute pokemon!
And Electabuzz can be really powerful, but what is he doing all the way out
here? Electabuzzes usually aren’t found anywhere except Gringy City and
Dark City.” I shrugged,
“I just want to get an Eevee so I can evolve it into Flareon..... or
Vaporeon..... or Jolteon....,” I stated.
“Ms. Gottall, your pokemon are healthy and ready to go,” the nurse
said.
“Oh, thank you so much!” Katie replied as we put our magazines
away. We went over to the counter, and Katie picked up her pokeballs.
Then we left the center, and went outside.
“So what do you want to do now?” I asked Katie.
“Get my first badge!” she answered. Chapter 6:

“They sure are creative when building gyms,” I stated as the Pallet
Town Gym (that I’d seen a million times before) still amazed me with it’s bee
hive-like structure.
“I heard that the gym in Pewter City looks like a huge boulder,” Katie
added.
“Well, let’s not just stand out here, why don’t we go inside,” I
suggested. We walked up to the automatic sliding door, it opened, and we
went inside. We walked up to the directory and I read it out loud. “Floor
#1-Pallet Town Pokemon Gym. Floor #2- A classroom where you can learn
about Bug-type pokemon and battle bug pokemon trainers. Floor #3- Pallet
Town Pokemon Mart.”
“Yes, a pokemon mart! I’m going to buy some potions!” Katie shouted
as she dragged me to the elevator. The door opened and we went inside.
Katie pressed a button labeled three on a panel, the elevator started moving,
and came to a halt after a short while. The door opened revealing a huge
store full of pokemon items. Katie dragged me out of the elevator to a rack of
T-shirts. “Hey, look at this one!” Katie held up a shirt. It read: I caught P M
S, and under the P, M, and S, it had a picture of Poliwag, Mankey, and
Spearow. We both laughed.
“Where do they come up with these?” I asked, not expecting an
answer. I continued to look around for awhile. I picked up some pokeballs
and potions, and took them to the cashier. “Hey, over here!” I called to Katie
when I noticed the pokeballs in the glass checkout counter.
Katie walked over to where I was standing, peered into the counter,
and said, “I wonder who’s in them.”
“Excuse me miss, I couldn’t help but overhear what you were saying,”
the man behind the counter started, “but we have a price list right here.” he
pointed to a piece of paper taped to the counter. I read down the list. Level
5: Weedle and Caterpie- 500 yen. Level 8: Kakuna and Metapod- 1,000 yen.
Level 16: Paras, Pinsir, Scyther, Butterfree, and Beedrill- 2,000 yen. Level
24: Parasect and Venonat- 3,500 yen. Level 33 Venomoth- 5,000 yen.
“You mean that these are pokemon that we can actually buy!?” Katie
asked.
The man nodded. “At almost every Pokemon Gym/Mart, you may buy
pokemon that are of that gym’s type,” the man answered.
