Live Bait
Live Bait is unique because it is a live album, hence the name Live Bait. It was recorded at concerts in late 1996 and early 1997. Of the three Worms CDs I have at the time, Dirt!, Christmas Turkey, and Live Bait, this is my favorite. It is the fourth album the trio has released, and combines hilarious new songs with classics from the first three albums. This will be a song-by-song review (see the Dirt! review).
It begins with "Jesus' Brother Bob." This song about Jesus' younger noname brother Bob comes from the Worms' first album, which was named "Arrogant Worms". It's a Worms classic and should not be ignored.
Next is "The Mountie Song." It comes from "C'est Cheese." One of the reasons I don't like it is that it's too long. Also, I just don't find it funny. Of course, being a citizen of the U.S. of A., I've never heard of mounties before in my life. :)
After that is "Canada's Really Big." Worms albums traditionally have one patriotic Candian song. Live Bait has two (I guess the Worms made up for that in Christmas Tirkey where there were none). This is the first. I love it. It describes how Canada doesn't have a good economy or anything like that, but they can still be proud because Canada's really big. This was not on any previous albums.
Following is "Me Like Hockey." I like this a lot. It's about an uncivilized bum/caveman who likes to watch hockey because of the fights. It's funny because of the manner he talks in. He sound like caveman. No use well grammer. Song is funny. It new song. Not on old albums.
Up next is "Proud to Be Canadian." It wasn't on any previous Worms albums. It's very funny. It's basically another patriotic Canadian song.
Next is "Malcolm". It's about a guy named Malcolm who solves all his problem with a chainsaw. It's OK.
After that is "TV Weather Guy." The name tells all. Not too great.
Coming after is the hilarious song "The Ballad of Dan," which comes from "Arrogant Worms." It sounds at first like an old, western cowboy song, but later it's revealed it's about Dan, the insurance salesman. In a beatup Chevrolet he does ride.
Next is "Carfull of Pain," also from "Arrogant Worms." I can't stand this song. I heard it once, and never did again.
Following is "Mounted Animal Nature Trail." Like "Carfull of Pain," I listened to it once. It comes from C'est Cheese.
After that is "Carrot Juice is Murder." This was chosen for Dr. Demento's 30th Anniversary collection, and is the only song from "Russell's Shorts" on this album. It's about someone who believes vegetables are like people, and shouldn't be tortured and eaten. A classic Worms song.
"Carrot Juice is Murder" is followed by yet another Worms classic, "The Last Saskatchewan Pirate." It's about a farmer who loses his job and becomes a pirate. Funny and catchy, a rare combo for one song.
That's basically "Live Bait." It's a treasure that every Worms fan deserves. |
